BEIJING - Chinese scientists have cloned three “super cows” able to produce 18,000 litres of milk per year and over 100,000 litres of milk in their lifetimes, a feat that may help reduce China’s dependency on imported dairy cows. The milk produced is no different from that produced by the clone’s originals, according to an expert involved in the experiment. Once the cloned calves reach two years of age, they can start producing milk for the market, he added. To clone the animals, scientists from the Northwest University of Agricultural and Forestry Science and Technology took somatic cells from the ears of highly productive Dutch Holstein Frisian cattle and placed them in surrogate cows, according to a news release from the university. The technique, known as somatic cell nuclear transfer, was the same used to create Dolly the sheep in 1996, the world’s first cloned mammal. The three calves were born in Lingwu city, Ningxia Hui autonomous region. The first calf was born on Dec 30 via caesarean section. It weighed 56.7kg and shared the same shape and patterning as the cow it was cloned from. After reaching maturity, the clone is expected to produce 18,000 litres of milk per year. In comparison, the average cow in the United States produces about 12,000 litres of milk annually, according to data from the US Department of Agriculture. Mr Jin Yaping, the project’s lead scientist, said that cloning “super cows” would allow China to preserve its best dairy breeds and avoid the biosecurity risk presented by importing live cows from other countries. Just pumped at SPC and witness this scene. cashier called a customer back asking him exactly which pump he paid for. cashier said that another customer(2nd) says his is pump3, so is his really pump3? the 1st customer then said his is pump4 after looking at his car parked and some prompting from the cashier. He didn’t seem to sound that apologetic. Note that at this SPC there is only one single row of pumps and all the cars are facing the cashier, meaning there is no pump behind which is blocked. the cashier also mentioned that she did ask if his car was a black car (Vellfire) at pump3 and he said yes, before she did the transaction. His own car was a silver vezel at pump4. the other thing was that the bill at pump3 was $85 vs $180 at pump4. In the end the cashier corrected the payment voiding the earlier payment of $85 and then charging 1st customer $180. i mean if one pumps a full tank regularly, wouldn’t the huge difference have rung alarm bells in one’s head when it came to payment. if maybe the guy was an old man, he would have been blur, but this was someone probably in his late 30s to early 40s at most. Hard to believe he could be so blur. so was he out to cheat?

Photos circulating online showed the man handcuffed next to his car at a carpark in the Beach Road area, with police officers searching the vehicle for illicit substances. Arrested after car accident in carpark The accident occurred at a carpark near Block 10 North Bridge Road at around 11:20am on Tuesday, according to Zaobao. A police spokesperson confirmed that a call for assistance was made at around 11:23am on Tuesday after an accident involving two cars had occurred at the location. The police confirmed that a 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug offences. Photos of the incident showed police officers searching the bonnet compartment of the vehicle. According to Zaobao, police dogs were also dispatched to the scene. Police retrieved bottles believed to contain illegal drugs. Another photo showed the Ferrari being towed away from the scene. According to Zaobao, there were no obvious scratches on the car, and it is understood that no one was injured in the crash. Investigations are ongoing. Of these, three were intended for the U.S. Air Force and all but one were intended for air to ground strike missions. The F-117 and B-2 both entered service as dedicated strike platforms, the former as a strike fighter in the early 1980s and the latter as a much larger intercontinental range strategic bomber in the late 1990s. These aircraft both served in the U.S. Air Force exclusively, and were followed by the F-22 Raptor air superiority fighter which was also used by no other country or service branch. It would remain the world’s only stealth aircraft with air to air combat capabilities for almost ten years from its entry into service in 2005. The fourth stealth aircraft of the period, which was the only one intended for the U.S. Navy and was a significantly more advanced strike design than the either the F-117 or the B-2, was the A-12 Avenger - a stealth fighter which rivalled the F-22 in sophistication. The A-12 was intended to prove U.S. Navy carrier air wings with a long range strike capability, and would have replaced the A-6E intruder in that role. With the F-14D Tomcat heavyweight air superiority fighter introduced from 1991, it was expected that these too could potentially be replaced by carrier variants of the F-22 to provide carriers with two long range stealth aircraft - one for strike and one for air to air missions. As it was, both the A-12 and the carrier variant of the Raptor were cancelled in the Cold War’s aftermath, and carrier air wings were made much less versatile but a lot cheaper to operate exclusively using F-18E Super Hornets. The F-18E was a non-stealthy aircraft which was lighter and much shorter ranged than either the F-22 or the A-12. The end of the Cold War also saw the A-6 end production in 1992, and it was subsequently retired in 1997 as part of an effort to reduce operational costs of carrier groups by relying solely on the F-18. The Advanced Tactical Aircraft program which would become the A-12 began development in 1983, a few years after the F-22, with McDonnell Douglas awarded the contract the following year. The aircraft were expected to be built in very large numbers, with the Navy expected to purchase 630 and the Marines around 240. The Air Force also considered purchasing up to 400 modified units to serve as ground based strike fighters to replace the F-111. The aircraft would have used the F412-GE-400 turbofan engine, a low maintenance design derived from the F404 use by the F-18, which in turn was used as a basis to develop the F414 engine for the F-18E, with commonality between the engines used by carrier based aircraft making maintenance easier. The A-12 made use of a flying wing design, but had a highly unusual triangular shape which maximised stealth and payload. It was built to carry a sizeable arsenal of air to ground ordinance alongside two AIM-120 active radar guided long range air to air missiles and and two AGM-88 HARM anti radiation missiles in standard configuration. Internal weapons bays could accommodate tactical nuclear weapons such as the B61, and the overall internal weapons load was set at 2300kg. To place this payload in perspective, the new F-35 stealth fighter can carry just 1,100 kg of internal weapons, and just 680 kg for the F-35B variant. The F-22 meanwhile carries 910kg from its shallower bomb bays. The A-12’s combination of stealth, long range and high ordnance allowed it to penetrate deep into enemy airspace for offensive strike missions - a capability considered vital throughout the Cold War. With other carrier based fighters without stealth capabilities such as the F-18 and F-18E left effectively obsolete for any kind of deep penetration mission by advances in Soviet air defence technology, the A-12’s importance was high. Part 2. One of the A-12 program’s most fundamental strengths turned out to be a major weakness, which was that unlike the F-22 which was a relatively conventional type of aircraft as a fighter with a similar layout and role to its predecessor the F-15, the A-12 was a revolutionary new design and as a result its development was pursued in great secrecy. As a result the aircraft drew considerable criticism from the civilian government particularly due to ongoing uncertainties regarding its cost. The fighter was cancelled two years after the Cold War’s end in 1991 as part of a decision by Defence Secretary Richard 'Dick' Cheney, at a time when the Warsaw Pact had recently collapsed, the U.S. had a string of new military bases in the Middle East and relations with the Soviet Union had improved as Moscow acquiesced to the prospects of a Western led order. Although the A-12 appeared to be an unnecessary asset in the Cold War’s aftermath, with carrier strike groups not expected to go up against anything approaching a peer level challenger, the reemergence of tensions with major military powers following the turn of the century such as China, Russia and North Korea meant that the Navy increasingly suffered for its lack of a survivable high endurance strike aircraft By cancelling the A-12 program the U.S. Navy surrender a long prized capability which would later cause serious issues for the continued viability of the carrier fleet against high end adversaries - an asset which would have otherwise been a cause for much concern in Pyongyang, Moscow, Beijing and the capitals of other potential targets. Compared to the A-12, the F-18E could cover under 20% of the area - an issue which was brought to the fore when the F-14 was retired from 2006 due to its high operational costs. As Bob Kress and Read Admiral Paul Gillcrist, USN (Ret.), observed regarding the much smaller new fighter in 2002, “Though it’s a wizzy little airshow performer with a nice, modern cockpit, it has only 36 percent of the F-14’s payload/range capability. The F-18E Super Hornet has been improved but still has, at best, 50 percent of the F-14’s capability to deliver a fixed number of bombs (in pounds) on target. This naturally means that the carrier radius of influence drops to 50 percent of what it would have been with the same number of F-14s. As a result, the area of influence (not radius) drops to 23 percent!” Next to the A-12 the comparison was far less favourable still and showed a major loss from the stealth jet’s retirement. The commissioning of the F-35C carrier based stealth fighter, while finally providing the U.S. Navy with a stealth fighter for its carrier air wings, still far from resolved the problem that the A-12’s cancelation had caused. The fighter had less than half the payload of the A-12, and with a much smaller airframe had only a fraction of the range. Furthermore, the A-12’s flying wing design was almost certain to be considerably stealthier, with the F-35’s radar cross section being similar to the of the F-117 from the 1980s. The lack of a long range stealthy carrier based strike platform would be particularly critical following the Barak Obama administration's Pivot to Asia initiative, as carrier air wings will be forced to deploy within range of a very large number of Chinese long range anti ship missile systems to be able to launch sorties against Chinese targets. Had the A-12 been in service, carrier groups would have retained the high endurance aircraft needed to launch sorties from much safer ranges which the F-35 and F-18E, although cheaper, were never deigned to be able to fly. The Navy is still looking for a possible replacement three decades latter, including an unmanned long range strike drone or the use of MQ-25 drone tankers to refuel F-35s in the air - although the latter option only partly solves the problem. As China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy moves to commission its own supercarriers, it is highly possible that a high endurance strike aircraft will be deployed from their decks for similar roles to the A-12. With three decades between them technologically, however, and with China investing heavily in stealth drone technologies, a Chinese carrier based radar evading strike platform will very likely be unmanned.

A group of the world’s richest soccer clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid, announced plans for a European breakaway league starting in August, a project that could herald the sport’s biggest shakeup in decades and make elite teams even wealthier. The marquee names -- six from England, three from Italy and three from Spain have signed up so far -- would play each other midweek as an alternative to the prestigious UEFA Champions League, according to a statement early Monday. In addition to what will be 15 permanent teams, another five will qualify each year for the so-called Super League. Establishing a new elite tournament in Europe would effectively end the Champions League’s decades-long reign as the world’s premier club contest, and revolutionize the sport’s structure. It would also funnel billions of dollars into the game’s upper echelons, following a year in which revenue has dropped as matches take place in largely empty stadiums. The 15 founding teams would share an upfront payment of 3.5 billion euros ($4.2 billion). Real Madrid’s Florentino Perez will be chairman of the group with Juve’s Andrea Agnelli and Manchester United’s Joel Glazer as vice-chairs. “We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world,” Perez said in the statement. “Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires.” By creating a system in which five places a year are available through a qualification process, the organizers are seeking to head off criticism that the competition is closed -- as with the National Football League in the U.S. and the National Basketball Association in North America. The group also pledged “solidarity payments” to European soccer of more than 10 billion euros. But even before the plans were announced, national leagues from England, Spain and Italy, plus the sport’s governing body in Europe, hit back at what they called a “cynical project” founded on self-interest. In addition to considering legal action, their joint statement raised the prospect of throwing teams out of their domestic leagues. Under the new project, any club would remain in its domestic league but pull out of the Champions League. FIFA, the global governing body and organizer of the World Cup, weighed in last week, saying it would ban players who took part in the breakaway. That could potentially throw next year’s World Cup in Qatar into chaos. Political heavyweights also chimed in, with leaders from U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson to former Italian Premier Enrico Letta voicing their concern. French President Emmanuel Macron praised French clubs for not signing up so far. The proposed league also comes as UEFA, the European ruling body, tries to push through a controversial program of its own this week. It wants to expand its tournament to 36 teams, giving each team 10 pre-knockout group matches compared to six now, an increase that irked some teams complaining the season already has too many games. The Super League’s plans: An August start with clubs in two groups of 10, playing home and away matches The top three in each group automatically qualify for the quarter finals. Teams finishing fourth and fifth will compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue. A women’s league will be also be launched “as soon as is practicable.” Proponents argue the new Super League would create a more exciting competition because the top teams would play each other more often. It would also be lucrative for them, with permanent membership removing the uncertainty of the Champions League, whose teams must qualify annually or risk losing broadcasting and sponsorship revenue. But the idea of creating a competition that removes the drama of a smaller team such as four-time champion Ajax winning the trophy or of a bigger club having to qualify in the first place, has angered supporter groups and former players. Fans of Chelsea, owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, highlighted what they regard as the greed within soccer. Gary Neville, who won eight Premier League titles as a Manchester United player and now works for Sky Sports, said he was “absolutely disgusted” with the move. The idea that teams could take part in a league and never be relegated from it was, he said, an “absolute disgrace.”
  8. Short-term business travellers from all countries will now be able to stay and have in-person meetings at a dedicated facility at the Singapore Expo without the need for prior quarantine. The first phase of Connect @ Changi was launched on Thursday (Feb 18) with 150 guest rooms, in a move to resume international business meetings in Singapore amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The facility, which has been billed as the first of its kind in the world, has 40 meeting rooms of different sizes - the smallest can take four people and the largest, 22. When fully operational later this year, it will be able to host up to 1,300 business travellers at any one time. The facility's opening marks the start of the Connect @ Singapore scheme that will open Singapore's borders to business, official and high economic value travellers. Under the scheme, travellers can meet in Singapore at designated facilities, but have to remain within the facilities throughout their stay. They also have to regularly take Covid-19 tests in lieu of quarantine. Room rates for the four-star Connect @ Changi facility start at $384, which is inclusive of three meals, mini-bar, toiletries, Wi-Fi, two-way airport transfer as well as the Covid-19 tests required during the course of the stay. Those who opt to stay there will be transported from the airport to the Singapore Expo directly after they take a Covid-19 test at the airport. They will have to stay in the room while waiting for their initial test result, which will take about six hours to process. Those who test negative can then have meetings through floor-to-ceiling air-tight glass panels with local businessmen and businessmen from other countries, with safe distancing measures in place. The areas that local residents and business travellers can access are physically separated, and have different ventilation systems. During the travellers' stay, meals and requested amenities will be placed on shelves outside their rooms to reduce physical interaction between them and the staff. As a safety precaution, cleaners will not enter rooms that travellers are staying in. When the traveller checks out, the cleaner will clean the room while donning full personal protective equipment. Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, who launched Connect @ Changi on Thursday, noted that while many businesses have shifted to virtual meetings amid the pandemic, these cannot fully replace face-to-face interactions. "For some, physical meetings are still important for securing and closing business deals, and making important decisions," he said. "Face-to-face interactions are important for growing relationships, strengthening partnerships, and exploring new business opportunities." Singapore was a popular destination for business meetings prior to Covid-19, and companies are turning to the Republic to safely resume such meetings, he added. Connect @ Singapore scheme was started to meet these business needs, he said. "As the pandemic evolves, we must make the best use of technology and innovate. We must take this chance to reinvent ourselves and reimagine the future, for there is no going back to before," said Mr Heng, pointing to the Expo facility as a good example of how to do so. The project is developed by a Singapore consortium led by Temasek, and includes The Ascott Limited, Changi Airport Group, Sheares Healthcare Group, SingEx-Sphere Holdings and Surbana Jurong. Temasek International joint head of strategic development Alan Thompson said the consortium is confident that there will be demand for Connect @ Changi, based on the number of inquiries it has received so far and its analysis of pre-Covid-19 business travel data. The consortium is in discussions with several parties, he added. It expects to receive its first guests in March. One confirmed client is Advanced MedTech Holdings, a global medical technology firm focusing on urology devices and service. The Singapore-headquartered firm plans to hold its first in-person global senior leadership meeting at the facility - its first since the pandemic began early last year. Advanced MedTech senior director of business development Lee Weikang said in-person meetings allow the staff to better connect with one another. "The smiles on each other's faces, the passion in our demeanours, the steely determination etched in our eyes, even the energy emanating from our physical presence - all these are hard to experience over virtual meetings," he said. The Lamborghini Huracan, worth at least £180,000 ($260,000, €230,000), will be the first taxi of its kind in the UK. The green Lambo is more than likely the only taxi you'll ever get with a five-litre engine and a top speeds of over 200mph. Actually the "pioneer" in mini SUV is not any conti car maker, but Japanese. How many here still remember there was once a a 659cc 20V turbo charged sample, with max. horsepower of 64ps, max torque of 97Nm, and a top speed rated at 130Km/h (in stock condition)? Yes, I am referring to Mitsubishi Pajero Mini. A fun car, but not necessary a fuel efficient one as one might have expected from a Kei car.
