  1. Three very different men of different ages decide on their favourite BMWs to suit their backgrounds and lifestyles. What are the BMWs that they’ve picked BMW’s ‘Power of Choice’ strategy offers customers the opportunity to choose the powertrain of their choice, from petrol-powered BMWs to plug-in hybrid or fully electric ones. For those who still prefer internal combustion engines, BMW’s wide range of models means that we get to pick the best car to suit our needs. While the more traditional choices include the 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series, you now have BMWs in all shapes and sizes. These include hatchbacks, coupes, MPVs and SUVs. But what would be a great start to the BMW range? I took my two colleagues to find out. And as cliché as it sounds, it was as easy as one, two, and three. The 1 Series – Young and professional In the working world, image is almost everything. And in my late 20s, there are many around me who want an identifiable badge, and they look at the BMW 1 Series for such inspiration. After all, being the 1 Series, it is the introduction to the world of BMW. It’s a hatchback, so it’ll appeal to those looking for an easier car to move around town. But for me, it isn’t about the badge. It is about having a car that’s pretty complete in features and driving quality. And the 1 Series delivers. It has safety assistance features such as Lane Keeping Assistant and Blind Spot Detection, and even added connectivity features such as wireless charging and wireless Apple CarPlay. And with its turbocharged 1.5-litre engine offering ample power along with a well-tuned chassis, it is a joyous drive when you throw some bendy bits of road at it. Mind you, this is the 116i variant of the BMW 1 Series, making it a Category A COE car. That means more savings, and yet, it still delivers a complete package. The 2 Series – Style and substance But hatchbacks aren’t for everyone. In Singapore, at least, sedans are still the traditional choice. And Desmond, now in his early 30s, is a stylish sort of man. But in a professional setting, having a car that’s a little too quirky isn’t exactly what he needs. What fits his needs, then? It is the 2 Series Gran Coupe. It is a practical four-door car, with a sloping, coupe-like silhouette. There’s style, substance, and big boot(y) practicality to the mix. What’s not to like? And talking about that boot, it is 430 litres big - more than enough hauling capacity for a family. That is of course if Desmond ever plans to build a family. But the 2 Series Gran Coupe effectively offers what’s available with the 1 Series and more. You get the good road manners and plenty of safety and infotainment features to justify its price tag. And in this 218i trim, you also get a higher dose of power, at 138hp and 220Nm of torque from its 1.5-litre turbo lump. And not to forget the generous dose of style the 2 Series Gran Coupe offers on the road. For a stylish man like Desmond, it is the perfect fit. The 3 Series – Family professional The 3 Series has been the staple in the BMW range for over seven generations, making it the oldest name amongst the other two. And currently, it is one of the best executive sedans out there. The 3 Series is not all about suits and ties. We’ll all look good in a 3 Series, but it does offer that stately age after being in the business for so long. Thus, for someone like Julian, a family man of two kids, you just cannot go wrong with the 3 Series. When the family is involved, comfort tends to be one of the priorities. As for ticking the right boxes, the 3 Series is now bigger, so there’s plenty of room to spare. While all three cars have air-con vents at the back, the one in the 3 Series has climate control. This allows Julian’s passengers to adjust the temperature to their liking. Which is quite a big deal, because this is the 318i – the introductory variant to the 3 Series here in Singapore. And with it comes a slew of standard features for Julian to enjoy. From BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant, which recognises voice commands, and a Reversing Assistant that takes control of the steering to trace the last 50 metres travelled, to the Digital Key, enabling Julian to set up his car key on a compatible iPhone and share it with up to five friends. Not to forget wireless features comprising charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto - the whole nine yards. And when you want to have some fun behind the wheel, that taut and agile chassis we’ve all known the 3 Series offers is still there. Does the complete package exist? Julian sure thinks so! Easy as One, Two, Three As you can see, the 1 Series, 2 Series and 3 Series are perfect choices for us in the Editorial team.   2. BMW's all new 1 Series hatchback has been shot in action many times by spy photographers and they can now reveal how it looks like inside. This is the first 1 Series to use a front-wheel drive platform and from the photos shown here, the car seems to be M135i xDrive with its souped-up body kit and blue brake callipers. Thanks to Carscoops, we can now see how the car looks inside too. Drawing inspiration from the latest 3 Series, the dashboard is clearly driver-focused and features a digital instrument cluster. It remains to be seen whether variants lower down in the range might be equipped with an analogue instrument cluster instead. Unfortunately we can't yet tell the switch to a front-wheel/all-wheel drive drivetrain has given the car more interior space than its predecessor. Hopefully, the new entry-level BMW will get a larger boot space too. The all new BMW 1 Series is expected to be launched later this year, likely at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.

  4. Need a premium hatch with good driving dynamics? Chances are you would have bought a BMW 1 Series F20/F21 hatchback. But chances are you also wish it could have a prettier face. Fret not, German aftermarket specialist, Individual Cars Consulting GmbH & Co. KG, has come up with a conversion package that will allow you to swap the 1 Series’s face with the new 2 Series coupe’s face. Costing less than 3,000€ (S$5,222), only the headlights, the front apron including the kidney grille and some other smaller parts under the bonnet need to be replaced for the conversion. Check out their completed demo car which is actually a M135i 3-door hatchback. Even the basic model without the M Sport bumpers looks good!
  5. Automotive breeds are diversifying at an increasing pace. But that did not seem to affect hatchbacks, which has gained a large fan base over the years (especially the hotter, souped up variants). Besides warming up to their chic, youthful image, people like them for their practicality and the ease of driving (and parking) one. Both the A3 and 116i are some of the easiest ways to gain entry into the respective marques (Audi and BMW). But of course, in the local climate, each of these hatchbacks will still cost upwards of $180k. The A3 is the newer entrant to the segment, and naturally look fresher of the duo. Audi has once again worked its wizardry, with help from the LED lamps, to create a facet that is distinctive and appealing to the senses. The 1 Series' styling may have raised a few brows when it first set foot on our grounds. But the recent facelift has pulled off an aggressive and sporty stance. We, especially, like how it looks from the rump. Audi's 1.4-litre chunk on the A3 puts out 122bhp and 200Nm of torque. Mated to a dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox, the drive is decidedly smooth. The bimmer's 1.6-litre, in comparison, edges out with better power figures - 136bhp and 220Nm of torque to be exact. Although the 116i utilises a more 'conventional' eight-speed gearbox with single-clutch setup, cog swops never felt lacking. Instead, we genuinely like how intuitive it felt on the sprints and in overtaking manoeuvres. Next, the interior. BMW's cabin is a no-frills example of how a premium interior should be like. Though we have to give it to the A3 for its simplistic, almost minimalist cabin, which looks and feel more modern than the 116's. Meanwhile, browse through the rest of the pictures and decide for yourself who is the winner of this duo.
  6. [extract] The BMW F20 1 Series was introduced in 2011 and it is a relatively new model. It comes in a variety of petrol and diesel engines but there is no performance sub-model available yet. And now, we do not have to wait any longer for one because the German automaker has released official pictures of the M135i concept which will premier at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next month. The M135i is a concept study of a BMW M Performance automobile which will feature a six cylinder petrol engine and BMW has stated that the car is consistent with the further development of the new BMW 1 Series
  7. By now photos of the 2012 BMW 1 series F20 have made their rounds through all the automotive websites and I have to say that this car is actually better looking than the model it replaced. Let me explain further why this new car is much better than the earlier version, the E81, in terms of styling. Firstly, is not styled by Chris Bangle. Any BMW not styled by Chris Bangle is a good BMW (with the exception of the 1st generation BMW Z4 which is messy with all the lines here and there, but still proportionate). Chris Bangle who has now quit the automotive industry (for the moment) gets his inspiration from an architectural philosophy called Deconstructivism. Now while that is all fine and dandy with buildings like the Guggenheim, in America or the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, a car with such a design tends to be too messy.     Baby BMW reborn

    Information regarding the 2012 BMW 1 Series has leaked onto the web, ahead of its unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show. These official photos along with the first details showed up on a German website called Motor Traffic, as BMW has yet to make an announcement.   9. BMW has released new information about the upcoming 1-Series M Coupe. The company has confirmed that power for the little rocket will come from the bi-turbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with approximately 340 hp. It will be mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission. The car will weigh around 1500 kg and feature a chassis, braking system and rear differential similar to the M3. According to Albert Biermann, Head of Development at BMW M GmbH, "The 1-Series M Coupe is completely in the tradition of the first BMW M3. It is compact, focused on the essential, and presents outstanding driving dynamics. In addition, it opens the door to BMW M - in particular its price will also make it more accessible than our other products." The 1-Series M Coupe will be unveiled in December, before it debuts at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Sales are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2011 and pricing will be between the 135i Coupe and the M3 Coupe, with a clear tendency towards the 135i.
  10. BMW has released the first teaser video of the hotly-anticipated 1 Series M Coupe. No details about the powertrain or performance specs have been revealed, though in the video M boss Kay Segler leaves no doubt that the 1-Series M Coupe will be a powerful machine that will give its driver "the goose pimples". The video shots suggest that the 1 Series M model will get the usual "M treatment" with extended wheel arches and a bodykit with unique bumpers and side skirts. According to Segler, the smallest ever BMW to wear the M-badge will arrive in showrooms in the first half of 2011. Stay tuned for more to come
