  1. The Pininfarina Sergio concept car was created to pay tribute to the Italian design house's late chairman and CEO, Sergio Pininfarina, who passed away last year at an age of 85. The stunning concept was displayed at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. According to Paolo Pininfarina, Sergio's son and chairman of the company, the concept was the result of a four-month labour of love by the entire team. Now, there is a chance that you could own a piece of the Sergio concept as there is a rumor that Pininfarina may produce 6 units of the concept at a price tag of about 3 million euros each. The Sergio concept, which is based on the Ferrari 458, sports a barchetta design as it has no windshield or side windows. A barchetta was originally an Italian style of open 2-seater sports car which was built for racing. If the car enters production, it will definitely get a windscreen to make it road-legal. Pininfarina chief designer Fabio Filippini said that they already know how and where to modify the Sergio concept car to make it into a compliant, street-legal model.
  2. At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, a lot of gorgeous models made their world premieres. These include the mid-engine Alfa Romeo 4C, the stunning new LaFerrari supercar and not to mention the fastest Lamborghini ever, the Veneno. However, a motor show is never complete without gorgeous models of another kind
  3. Suzuki has unveiled the new SX4 compact crossover at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show - the production version of the S-Cross concept, which was displayed at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. Measuring 4,300mm (L) by 1,765mm (W) by 1,575mm (H), the second generation SX4 is significantly larger than the outgoing model. As a result, the new model offers much more boot space at 430 litres as compared to its predecessor's 270 litres. The new SX4 has an imposing front fascia with large head lamps and an upright grille. It also features what the company claims to be the world's first double sliding glass panoramic sunroof. The car will be offered in two or all-wheel-drive configuration and has four driving modes for selection. The Crossover will be available with two engine options, namely a 1.6-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre diesel with a variable geometry turbocharger. The petrol version is mated to a five-speed manual transmission while the oil-burner gets a six-speeder. An optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifts and manual mode is available for both.
  4. The new Infiniti Q50 makes its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show with a Mercedes-sourced 2.2-litre diesel engine. According to the premium Japanese brand, the Q50 is the most significant car yet for the European market place as it will compete against the likes of the Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 series. The 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel produces 168bhp with 400Nm of torque. The engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic transmission. The diesel Q50 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in less than 9 seconds before hitting a top speed of approximately 230km/h. Despite its size, this version of the Q50 sips fuel at an average 4.4L/100km and emits CO2 at a rate of 115g/km. The luxury sedan would quality for S$15,000 CEVS rebate if it were to arrive on our shores. A more powerful 3.5-litre Q50 hybrid with 364bhp is also available. It completes the century sprint in a much quicker 5.5 seconds. The engine is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission as well.
  5. Audi has released the A3 e-tron in the Avant body style at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. An 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery sits under the floor beneath the rear seat, complete with a liquid cooling system. The plug-in hybrid is driven by a parallel hybrid drivetrain consisting of a turbocharged 150bhp 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine and a small electric motor integrated into the car's six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The electric motor generates 102bhp. The A3 e-tron goes to 100km/h in 7.6 seconds and is able to achieve a top speed of 222km/h. In a plug-in hybrid, the focus is on fuel efficiency. According to Audi, the vehicle uses petrol at a miserly 1.5L/100km and produces CO2 at a mere 35g/km. The A3 e-tron can be driven in hybrid, electric or gasoline mode. When driven in EV mode, the car provides a range of up to 49km. The fwd model is not scheduled for production yet.

  7. Honda has released a set of photos showing the new Civic Wagon Concept. The concept will make its debut very soon at the Geneva Motor Show. The concept looks quite production ready if we take away the fancy LED surrounding the headlights and fog light casing. The twin-trapezoidal exhaust pipe setup is unlikely to make it to the production version as well. The Civic Wagon is probably one of the smartest looking of its kind among rival products such as the Golf Variant and Focus Wagon. The sleek front end combined with the beautiful front and rear wheel arches creates an aggressive stance. The steeply-raked windscreen further accentuates that sporty looks. The concept version wears large alloy wheels that fill up the wheel arches nicely. At the Geneva Motor Show, the Civic Wagon Concept will be equipped with Honda's latest 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel that is good for 118bhp and 330Nm of torque. The Civic Wagon will enter production next year and will be offered in Europe.
  8. From the company that brought us side airbags, Volvo has introduced the Active High Beam Control Technology. According to Volvo, this system allows drivers to use their high beams at all times without causing disturbance to the rest of the traffic users. Volvo will display the new technology at the Geneva Motor Show. The system uses a camera mounted at the back of the rearview mirror to detect the traffic ahead. A device in the head lamps then partially blocks out the high beam in order not to cause glaring to oncoming drivers. Volvo says that the program is designed to be so precise that even an oncoming motorcycle can be detected and shielded from the high beam effectively. "When another car approaches from the opposite direction, the system helps to prevent dazzling of the oncoming driver by shading out only as much of the beam as necessary. The same functionality applies to drivers in front. The side of the road is still illuminated, which makes it easier to detect unprotected road users," Volvo explains. The new system will be available as an option in the updated S60, V60, and XC60 in early 2014. Personally, I feel that it should be fitted as a standard equipment instead as I believe not many people would want to pay extra for something that does not benefit himself.
  9. This is the Kia Provo Concept which the Korean brand will introduce at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Earlier this year, Kia described the concept as a racy new urban concept featuring a "mischievous yet friendly grille and headlight arrangement". The concept's roof and part of the lower front bumper are painted in orange. The massive alloy wheels and bulging rear wheel arches lends an aggressive look. At the back, the Provo has a dual exhaust setup and a tail light combination that stretches across the boot. On the inside, the Provo has a simplistic layout with digital dials. It has a flat-bottomed steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara leather which would not look out of place in an Audi TT RS. The issue is how one classifies the Provo's body style. Two-door suggests a coupe but the Nissan Juke-like wheel arches indicates an SUV. The Provo could preview yet another interesting model from the Hyundai Group after the Veloster three-door hatchback. No power train information is available at the moment.
  10. Volkswagen has released the photos of the 2013 Golf Variant prior to its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show which will open its door in a few days' time. The Golf Variant is essentially an estate version of the popular Golf hatchback. The most practical version of the Golf will be launched alongside with the Golf GTI, GTD, e-Golf and the plug-in hybrid. Engine lineup is expected to be similar to the hatchback, which means 1.2-litre with 85bhp or 105bhp and 1.4-litre with 122bhp or 140bhp for the petrol options. Diesel choices include the 1.6-litre with 104bhp and 2.0-litre with 148bhp. Depending on which part of the world you are residing, the Golf Variant may also be called Golf Wagon, Golf Estate or Jetta SportWagen.
  11. Toyota has released the official images of the FT-86 open concept ahead of its world premiere at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The concept bears a similar front fascia as the coupe version but the hardtop is replaced by an electrical-operated soft top. The boot and windscreen have also been modified. Toyota commented that the convertible conveys a feeling of oneness with nature while maintaining the joy and sense of oneness with the vehicle. When it goes into production, the very successful Mazda MX-5 will have a new rival. The interior of the FT86 Open Top features contrasting white and navy blue tones on the dashboard, seats and steering wheel. The floor is laid with yellow-gold carpeting. Other highlights include alloy pedals and metallic accents. Toyota has yet to release the engine specifications, but it should inherit the 2.0-litre four cylinder, direct-injected boxer engine from its hardtop sibling. The naturally-aspirated lump is good for 200bhp and 205Nm of torque.
  12. Supercar maker McLaren has released the details of the production version of the P1 prior to its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Only 375 units will be produced instead of the originally planned 500 copies to maintain the car's exclusivity. The P1 is motivated by a hybrid powertrain consisting of a twin-turbo, 3.8-litre V8 generating 737bhp with 720Nm of torque and an electric motor producing 179bhp and 260Nm. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox which sends power to the rear wheels. The P1 has a carbon fibre chassis which weighs 100kg, which is the lightest ever installed on a road-going car. According to McLaren, it is capable of providing the safety and rigidity of an F1 vehicle. The slippery P1 has a CD figure of 0.34 and can generate 600kg of downforce, which is five times more than the MP4-12C. The super car is fitted with an Instant Power Assist System (IPAS). According to McLaren, the IPAS is the electric motor which can be activated via a steering wheel-mounted button that gives the P1 the throttle response of a normally-aspirated engine. With the IPAS on, the P1 reaches 100km/h from standstill under 3 seconds and achieves 200 km/h within 7 seconds.
  13. As we draw closer to the launch of the Alfa Romeo 4C at the Geneva Motor Show, the Italian car maker has released more images of the coupe as well as an interior photo for the first time. The side view of the interior photo shows a simple dashboard layout. The sexy Italian two-door model measures less than 4 metres long and features a carbon fibre monocoque. The car weighs at approximately 960kg. The 4C will be powered by a new four-cylinder 1,750cc engine capable of 240bhp. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a TCT dual dry-clutch transmission. This means that the mid-engined sports car has an expected power-to-weight ratio of 4kg/bhp. For comparison, the Nissan 370Z has a ratio of 4.54kg/bhp and it already goes from 0 to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds. The driving experience can be tailored via Alfa Romeo's DNA selector, which adds a 'Race' mode to the familiar 'Dynamic', 'Natural' and 'All Weather' settings.
  14. Some time in the first half of 2011, the Mk6 Golf GTD was introduced in Singapore. Now, the new generation is about to make its debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Like the Mk6 Golf GTD, the Mk7 version combines the styling details and chassis setup of the GTI with a diesel engine. The GTD will only be offered in three exterior colors, namely Tornado Red, Black and Pure White. Motivation is provided by a 2.0-litre common rail turbocharged inline-four producing 181bhp and 380Nm of peak torque from 1,750 rpm. The engine is coupled to a standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed dual clutch DSG. Century sprint is completed in 7.5 seconds while the fastest speed that one can go is 229km/h. The Mk7 Golf GTD shaved off 0.6 seconds in the century sprint performance as compared to its 170bhp predecessor. On the inside, the GTD gets tartan sports seats, flat-bottom steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and a gear lever with 'GTD' engraving.
  15. After revealing the third generation Skoda Octavia towards the end of 2012, the Czech automaker has recently released the official photos of the Combi variant. The estate model will be making its global premiere at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show alongside with the four-wheel drive version. The new Octavia Combi has significantly increased proportions, boasting a 110mm longer wheelbase along with a 90mm longer and 45mm wider body as compared to its predecessor. Available boot space is increased to 1740 litres with the rear seats folded. Skoda commented that the Combi will get a selection of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines that is similar to the Liftback. The Liftback
  16. There is a new "3" sedan in town. Although it may sound like a car that hails from Germany, it is actually the first small family saloon from Chinese car manufacturer, Qoros. The Qoros 3 will be making its world premiere in March's Geneva Motor Show. Qoros was founded as a part of a joint venture between Chery Automobile and global holding company, Israel Corporation. At launch, the 4.59m long saloon will be available with two 1.6-litres petrol engines - a naturally-aspirated unit and a turbocharged version. They produce 126bhp and 156bhp respectively. Both engines will come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard and an optional dual-clutch automatic transmission. The lower-powered engine propels the car from 0 to 100km/h in 11.0 seconds while the turbocharged lump does the same job in 9.0 seconds. Two turbocharged, direct-injected engines with 1.2-litres and 1.6-litres capacity are under development. The Qoros 3 sedan will be joined by the Qoros 3 Estate Concept at the Geneva Motor Show. The Qoros 3 sedan will go on sale in the second half of the year.
  17. The Alfa Romeo Gloria concept, which will debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, is said to be a preview of the new Giulia sedan that will go on sale in Europe, Asia and the United States in 2015. The Giulia sedan is the replacement of the Alfa 159 whose production ended in late 2011. The Giulia will be offered as a wagon as well. Measuring 4700mm long by 1920mm wide by 1320mm tall with a wheelbase of 2900mm, the Gloria concept is developed by students from the European Design Institute who were asked to create their vision of a sedan that would appeal to customers in North American and Asia. The new Giulia will have the longest wheelbase among models underpinned by Fiat-Chrysler's compact wide architecture. The Giulia will be an integral part of Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne's plan to boost Alfa Romeo's sales to 300,000 units by 2016 from 100,000 in 2012.
  18. Mercedes has released the official photos of the A 45 AMG prior to its world premiere at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The German hot hatch is planned to go on sale in April. The A 45 AMG is powered by a highly-tuned 2.0-litre turbocharged, direct-injected engine that is good for 350bhp and 450Nm of torque. Its main rivals, the BMW 135i and Audi RS3, produce 320bhp/450Nm and 340bhp/450Nm respectively. Power is transferred to all four wheels via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission. It should complete the century sprint in 4.6 seconds en route to an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h.

  20. Opel has made an announcement to introduce the Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. It will be the first Opel model to feature GM Europe's latest diesel engine which will eventually replace the current range of 1.7-litre diesel and certain lower-powered 2.0-litre diesels. The 1.6-litre CDTi engine has an output of 134bhp with a peak torque of 320Nm, enabling the MPV to complete a century sprint in 10.4 seconds before achieving a top speed of 193km/h. In terms of efficiency, the Zafira sips fuel at an average rate of 4.1L/100 km with CO2 emissions of 109 g/km. This means that the oil burner should qualify for CEVS rebates of up to S$15,000 should the car come to Singapore. Measuring 4.66m (L) by 1.82m (W) by 1.69m (H), the Zafira is in the compact MPV market against the likes of the Volkswagen Touran and Toyota Wish.

  22. Like someone who goes for frequent Botox treatments, the Renault Scenic and Grand Scenic MPVs have undergone yet another facelift since the last time in January 2012. These revised models will make their world premiere in March's Geneva Motor Show together with the tough-looking Scenic XMOD. The facelifted Scenic and Grand Scenic sport the French carmaker's new corporate grille that is seen on the Clio and Captur crossover. On the interior, the MPVs get Renault's latest R-Link infotainment system featuring joystick control and a touchscreen display. The higher end Scenic model gets a Bose sound system. Underneath the hood, the revised Scenic family (including XMOD model) will be sold with three new Energy engines including the 1.4-litre TCe 130 which produces 130bhp as its name suggests. The new TCe 130 has a low-inertia turbocharger that is responsive even at low engine speeds.
  23. The all-new Infiniti Q50 will be making its European Premiere at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March. More importantly, the replacement for the G Series saloon will be the first Infiniti model to get forced-fed power plants sourced from Mercedes Benz. Although Infiniti did not reveal any details on the engines, they are expected to be the gasoline 1.8-litre turbocharged and the 2.1-litre diesel lump. The oil burner churns out 204bhp/500Nm in the CLS250 while the 1.8-litre produces 184bhp/270Nm in the C200 BlueEFFICIENCY. "The Infiniti Q50 is a world-class sports saloon with an engine line-up that will clearly demonstrate its intentions to be a major player within the European premium market," said Bernard Loire, Vice President, Infiniti Africa, Middle East and Europe (AMIE). Measuring 4.78m (L) by 1.82m (W) by 1.44m (H), the new Q50 saloon is targeted at BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 buyers. With a new range of smaller capacity engines, Infiniti will be able to compete more effectively in the European market than in the past. I am sure a 1.8-litre Infiniti saloon will improve the market share of the premium Japanese brand in Singapore as well.
