  1. Hi all, as above question........ say i got $50k cash, which FD account has highest interest? pls dun tell me about whatever investment scheme or whatnot.... not interested in investments for this sum of $$.
  2. How to call for help? I called Singtel 1688. Put me to voice message and claimed to call back in 2 hours. I left 2 messages at 7pm+. No sound from them. at 830pm, called again and this time... "voice message is full. Thank you for your call!" This is customer service from SINGTEL. Home home line is not working since this afternoon. got ring if I call in but phone not ringing. But my mio TV, using the same phone link is working. So, physical line should be fine. I have 2 phones. 1 cordless and 1 analogue corded phone. Both also not ringing and no dial tone. What else could be the root cause?
  3. Need a bit of advice, please. Had a bit of AUD$ in a bank (which shall remain nameless for now) and am absolutely fed up with their (lack of) service. Would like to transfer that out into a new foreign currency fixed deposit with another bank while I wait for the AUD to (hopefully) pick up in strength vs the SGD. I'm looking for a tenure of 6 months (min) to 12 months (max). Which bank(s) would you recommend based on: 1) best interest rate for AUD FCFD? 2) least hassle in starting up an acct? 3) least overheads (fees) in starting up an acct? I intend to put the $$ in via a demand draft, but I can also do a wire transfer (some fees involved with the latter). The amount is not a lot but it should be more than enough to meet the "minimum" criteria for most FCFD (over $10k AUD). I'm just looking for a good place to park this small amount for a short time. I've only explored DBS in detail right now - they're giving just over 4% for a 6 month tenure, with 0.125% fees (min $10, max $120) to start the A/C. Maybank seems to be giving better rates on their website (4.75% for AUD with 12 month tenure), but I haven't called them up. Could those with experience with other banks please advise? Thanks in advance.
  4. http://sg.sports.yahoo.com/news/two-charged-english-football-fixing-probe-183113457--spt.html Two charged in English football fixing probe wo men with Singaporean nationality suspected of fixing matches in lower-league English football were charged with conspiracy to defraud on Thursday, prosecutors said. The men, alleged to be members of a Singapore-based illegal betting syndicate, were among six people arrested this week in an investigation by the recently-formed National Crime Agency (NCA). Chann Sankaran, a 33-year-old Singapore national, and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, a 43-year-old with dual British and Singapore nationality, will appear before magistrates in Cannock, central England, on Friday. A seventh man has been arrested and he and the four other men were bailed on Thursday, the NCA said in a statement. Sankaran and Ganeshan have been accused of conspiring to defraud bookmakers by influencing the course of football matches and placing bets on them between November 1 and November 26 this year. The maximum sentence for this offence is 10 years’ imprisonment. The NCA added their investigation was ongoing. Earlier, the Daily Telegraph newspaper said an undercover investigation by its reporters had triggered the probe by the NCA, Britain's answer to the FBI. No teams in England's lucrative Premier League are believed to be involved in the probe. A spokesman for the Football Association, the sport's governing body in England, said: "We have worked closely with the authorities in relation to these allegations. The FA will make no further comment at this time due to ongoing investigations." The Football League, which runs the three professional divisions below the Premier League, said they had not been contacted by the police. "The threat of corruption is something that the Football League and the other football authorities treat with the utmost seriousness," said chief executive Shaun Harvey. "The integrity of our matches and our competitions is the bedrock of the domestic game." In February, Europe-wide police agency Europol said it had found evidence of match-fixing in top international football matches and it had uncovered an organised crime syndicate based in Asia that was behind the operation. The biggest case of fixing in sport in Britain in recent years involved three Pakistan cricketers and a British agent who were jailed in 2011 for spot-fixing during a Test match against hosts England. The men were involved in pre-arranging no-balls for shadowy South Asian betting rings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30Y1zmLqfx0

  11. Hi buddies! Anyone subscribed to m1 fixed broadband? How's the experience like? My SHBB has expired and i am fed up to see my down speed drop to around 1.2Mbps during peak hours. A scan using my wireless adapter reveals 25 WLANs of which roughly 2/3 belongs to SHBB subscribers. My impression is that m1 leases a line from SH and essentially resells it.
  12. hi all, i've been checking out the fixed deposit and structured deposit products and i need some advices. by the way, these are 100% guaranteed return and 100% principal guaranteed products UNLIKE Lehman's mini-bonds. fixed deposit -> highest interest rates is from maybank, 1% pa for 18 months structured deposit -> 3.5%, 6.5%, 11.5% for 5 years maturity -> there are so many and each has its own pros and cons such as got penalty for early redemption, admin charges, low/high/potential growth, payout is made quarterly/yearly/maturity, insurance coverage, etc 1. what one must take note for structured deposit T&C ? 2. guaranteed % return range between 3% - 5%. some products have "potential" upside/growth to make it 11% - 12%. is potential = nonsense ? 3. i have made it very clear that my requirement is 100% got return + 100% principal guarantee, so RISK should be ZERO. what other hidden cost might involve that dilute my principal ? 4. Any products that you have found suitable for ZERO risk taker who just want the $$ to work slightly harder ? This is the % of cash that I need to keep in the bank for rainy days in addition to % cash that already invested in the stocks (blue chip). And, property investment is not something that I'm keen for another 2 years or so. Beside, the cash is not enough to hoot mid-to-high end property. Thanks !

  17. who is next in line?... .... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ home > Breaking News > Singapore > Story Oct 6, 2008 SingTel raises phone rates First rate revision in 18 years . SINGAPORE Telecommunications (SingTel) on Monday announced its first rate revision in 18 years for its fixed-line telephone subscription and call charges, and said it will offer $1 million worth of credit vouchers to needy households. From Jan 1, fixed-line telephone customers will pay $10 more a year in subscription rates - an increase of 83 cents a month. With this revision, residential customers will pay $110 a year and business customers will pay $160. Call charges will increase to 0.8 cents from 0.7 cents per 30-second block during peak hours and per 60-second block during off-peak hours. To reflect changes in call traffic patterns, peak hours will be revised to 9am to 7pm from 8am to 6pm, Mondays to Fridays. Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays are off-peak. With the new rates, most customers will pay not more than an additional $1.50 a month, said SingTel in a statement. In a statement, the telco said it had been able to hold off any rate increase earlier through productivity improvement and network rationalisation by reducing the number of exchange buildings. Mr Allen Lew, SingTel's CEO Singapore, said: 'We have held off rate revisions for 18 years despite rising costs. Over the years, the two main cost components, manpower and materials, have increased substantially. The recent rapid increase in utility costs has also pushed up our running costs.' SingTel said the average annual wage has risen 52 per cent between 1997 and 2007, according to Ministry of Manpower statistics. But the cost of copper, a key material component in the fixed-line network, tripled from 1991 to 2007, according to the benchmark London Metal Exchange. 'While we are committed to delivering affordable and good quality fixed-line services, the service must remain sustainable. SingTel is among the last remaining operators in this region to revise telephone charges. With this adjustment, our charges continue to be one of the lowest in this region,' Mr Lew added. To help needy households, SingTel will provide $1 million worth of credit vouchers, each worth $10, to these residents. Those who need assistance can approach their Citizens' Consultative Committees or People's Association grassroots leaders. Said Mr Lew: 'We hope to cushion the effect of the rate revisions on our customers by providing $1 million worth of credit vouchers to those who need financial assistance.' In addition, fixed-line residential customers who sign up for both SingTel's electronic bill statement (www.singtel.com/myBill) and GIRO before March 31 will enjoy a one-time $10 discount on their annual subscription. http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_286545.html

  19. (The Straits Times) - SINGAPORE newspapers should be more circumspect in treating 'allegations or innuendoes that clearly sought to damage the character and reputation' of important Malaysian personalities, said the Malaysian High Commissioner to Singapore, Datuk N. Parameswaran. 'I say this because I believe that it is personalities who determine the state of relations between two countries,' wrote Mr Parameswaran in a letter addressed to the Editorial Director of MediaCorp Press, which publishes the free tabloid Today. Taking issue with an article in Today headlined Under Fire - the First Lady-in-waiting, Mr Parameswaran wrote: 'When I arrived in Singapore, Malaysia-Singapore relations were really at a low. But it was the personalities of Prime Minister Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong which made possible the positive changes that had taken place in the bilateral relations between Malaysia-Singapore.' He added that since then, other personalities both in Singapore and Malaysia had 'contributed much to bringing the bilateral relations to the very warm level that we find ourselves in today'. He wrote that he 'was rather perturbed' by the Today article as it carried quotes which he said 'vilified the character' of Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, the wife of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak. Madam Rosmah and her husband's names were mired in controversy when a popular blogger last month claimed that Madam Rosmah was connected to the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu. Mr Parameswaran said that he had never found Madam Rosmah to be 'arrogant' or 'not as humble' as suggested by the article. 'In fact, Datin Seri Rosmah was always warm towards my officers and me and was always caring about our welfare,' he wrote. 'I would be sad if I learn next year that Dato' Seri Najib finds himself not in a position to attend the Shangri-La Dialogue which he has attended five times since its inception, or if I learn that the Najib family has decided to spend their holidays elsewhere.' http://www.malaysia-today.net/2008/content/view/9452/84/ the article http://www.malaysia-today.net/2008/index2....o_pdf=1&id=9288
  20. May 15, 2008 Man who chained up library doors charged By Elena Chong A 58-YEAR-OLD man was charged in a magistrate's court on Thursday with using a bicycle chain to lock the steel handles of the glass doors at the entrance of the National Library building. Retiree Bin Hee Heng did not give a plea. He is accused of public nuisance by causing annoyance to the public at the Victoria Street premises on March 15. He made news two months ago when he insisted on parking his bicycle at the library's pedestrian walkway instead of designated bicycle lots nearby. An avid investor, Bin has been a frequent library user, going there four times a week to read Asian Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. Bin, who was not represented, told the court that he was making representations to the Attorney-General's Chambers. He told the court twice that he was not an anti-social element. He also said he had apologised to the chief executive officer of NLB in March. He appealed for compassion and sympathy. Bail of $5,000 was set. His case will be mentioned on June 12. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $1,000. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_237624.html

  22. Taken from Wired Blog Network at http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/04/daniel_k-who-fi.html Daniel_K, Who Fixed Creative's Broken Vista Drivers, Speaks Out By Rob Beschizza April 01, 2008 | 11:13:33 AMCategories: Audio Daniel_K, the Creative Labs fan who fixed the company's broken Vista sound card drivers only to be threatened by the corporate brass, just e-mailed with his side of the story. "My name is Daniel Kawakami and I'm Brazilian," he writes. "I'm NOT a cracker, a hacker, just an enthusiast modder with basic assembly knowledge and very persistent." Kawakami's expertise allowed him to enable advanced features in sound cards that Creative advertised as Vista-compatible, but which did not perform as well under that operating system as they do under Windows XP. After tolerating the distribution of his unofficial drivers for a time, Creative's vice president of corporate communications, Phil O'Shaughnessy, ultimately asked him to stop, and accused him of "stealing their goods." O'Shaughnessy also wrote that whether or not it cripples its Vista drivers is a "business decision that only we have the right to make." The rest of Kawakami's e-mail follows, verbatim, after the jump.
  23. March 26, 2008 Have $50 notes with 'KF' mark? MAS says they're worthless By Esther Tan WHEN Mr G.S. Lee withdrew some money from an OCBC Bank ATM at Compass Point earlier this month, three of his $50 notes seemed a bit strange - the letters 'KF' were on the top right hand corner. The bank told him then that there was 'no problem with the notes', he said, but the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has since clarified that such notes have been mutilated on purpose and are therefore worthless. The letters looked 'legally imprinted', said Mr Lee in an e-mail to The Straits Times online portal, Stomp, asking what the letters might mean. But 'KF' is not part of the $50 note's design, said MAS' spokesman, adding it did not know what 'KF' stood for. 'Notes with such markings are considered to be deliberate mutilation and they command no value,' she added. Anyone who has notes with the markings can take them to the banks to be exchanged, she said, and MAS will take the notes back as an 'act of grace'. When contacted, OCBC's head of group corporate communications Koh Ching Ching said currency could have become defaced while being circulated. She said the bank's ATMs will be checked so any other mutilated notes can be retrieved. She added that OCBC's tellers are 'trained to look out for defaced or mutilated notes and handle them as per guidelines provided by MAS', and that it has reminded its staff to be vigilant. 24. SINGAPORE, Jan 26 - A choir that planned to sing a list of complaints about life in Singapore cancelled its performances after the city-state banned its foreign members from singing, organisers said on Saturday. The 60-member "complaints choir", a concept that originated from two Finnish artists, was scheduled to perform at a weekend festival but authorities granted a performance licence on the condition that the foreigners would not participate. "Our conductor is Malaysian, so how could the choir go ahead without him?" said Melissa Lim, the festival organiser. Singapore's Media Development Authority said the license was conditional because the lyrics touched on "domestic affairs" and it preferred only Singaporeans take part. Some of the complaints that would have been sung included, "when a pregnant lady gets on the train, everyone pretends to sleep" and "when I'm hungry at the food court, I see people seats with tissue paper". Singapore, which faces a low birth rate and a greying population, has turned increasingly to immigrants to boost its work force. It aims to add another 2 million people to the island's 4.7 million people over the next 40 to 50 years. The city-state is frequently criticised by human rights groups for its restrictions on expression and the media. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/200801...r-c3bb44c.html
