  1. Looks like the hot Hatch category getting interesting next Year You Have the Renault RS which is zero to 100 in about 5.7 to 6 sec New engine. Not as ricey as the Civic and tamer. Functional Diffuser. 4 Wheel Steering, which may not be everyone's liking. Hopefully, they nail it this time round. Its downsize to 1.8T instead of 2.0 T so I suspect no replacement for displacement means the 150 to 200 kmh range will be slower on the straight. Comes stock at 280 bhp while GTi is 235 bhp. vs Civic 308 bhp. Let see what kind of prices. If the number falls in the 145 to 155 K range, probably have very good takeup rate.
  2. The race was stopped on the first lap of last weekend's Portugal leg of the World Touring Car Cup as a huge crash involving multiple cars happened. Rob Huff, who was in pole position, came into his Volkswagen teammate Mehdi Bennani after running side by side through the first couple of corners. Upon reaching the third turn, Bennani knocked into the left rear side of Huff's Golf GTI and before you know it, everything one started crashing into each other. Thankfully no one was hurt but both Golf GTI had to be written off as reported by Autosport. Huff was very thankful that rivals Gabriele Tarquini and Yvan Muller came over to attend to him immediately after the crash. "I'd like to say a huge thanks to Gabriele Tarquini," added Huff. "I was very winded after the crash and couldn't get out of my car, and with the engine oil spilling it was on fire, he quickly came over and helped me get out of the car and stayed with me in the few minutes before the medical teams arrived. "Also thanks to Yvan Muller, who came to help out; it just shows that even though we're all rivals on the track, there's a great camaraderie between us all." After the track was cleared, the race resumed and Yvan Muller finished first in his Hyundai i30 N. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MQZryIghvo
  3. wow, 1.6 T 201BHP and competing with Golf GTi. Wonder if it will reach SG?
  4. Plug-in hybrids are gaining in popularity, with Ford, Toyota and Honda all offering vehicles fitted with the unique powertrains. But while cars like the Fusion Energi, Prius Plug-In and Accord Plug-In boast excellent economy numbers as they match the best assets of electric vehicles with traditional hybrids, they lack the zest and fun that some drivers crave. According to rumors from the UK, though, a fun plug-in could be on the horizon. Hoping to capitalize on the performance reputation of the GTI, Volkswagen is reportedly developing a car called the Golf GTE. Power would come from the same powertrain slated for the Audi A3 E-Tron, a 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder with 148 horsepower. Mated to that is a 107-horsepower electric motor, which draws power from an 8.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. A 6-speed, dual-clutch transmission would shift 204 total system horsepower to the front wheels, which will allow the GTE to hit 62 miles per hour in 7.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 135 mph. Outside of the unique powertrain, we'd expect the GTE to follow the same formula used for the diesel-powered Golf GTD - that means GTI-sourced bits for the suspension and brakes, as well as sportier interior and exterior treatments. It is unclear if this model will make it to Singapore market, but even if it does, we can only expect this model somewhere in late 2015.
  5. Volkswagen is working on a carbon fibre roof option for performance versions of the Volkswagen Golf. Although Volkswagen did not specify the specific models, it would be safe to assume that the GTI, GTD and 'R' variants would be receiving the carbon fibre treatment. According to Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Volkswagen's Research and Development Chief, the challenge at the moment is to develop a set of waterproof joints to seal the roof to the car's body sides and to its windshield. The carbon fibre roof will provide a weight saving benefit of about 18 to 20 pounds (eight to nine kilograms), improving performance and fuel economy. There are no details on the pricing or launch date for the option at the moment. In recent years, there has been a great interest in the use of carbon fibre material among car makers. BMW and Boeing announced last year that they were collaborating on carbon fibre materials while Volvo has been working on a carbon fibre flywheel technology that can provide up to 25 percent fuel savings when paired to a four-cylinder turbo engine over a six-cylinder unit.
  6. [extract] Volkswagen has launched two limited editions of the MK6 Golf GTI to commemorate the final model year of the hot hatch at the Chicago Auto Show. The GTI Wolfsburg Edition will go on sale in Q1 2013 and only 2000 units will be produced. For the GTI Driver
  7. [extract] Every time Volkswagen releases a new Golf GTI model, it gets more powerful and faster. The current Golf GTI makes around 210bhp and with 280Nm of torque. Pretty powerful for a hatchback but there are other more powerful alternatives if someone
  8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvPYvz8Ioh8 It seemed only yesterday when the Mk 6 Golf was launched. The existing Golf was a milestone model for the Volkswagen Group as it heralds a new corporate face for the brand, which is now commonly seen on the Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, etc. Now, the Mk 6 Golf is moving one step closer to retirement as the seventh-generation Golf GTI prototype has been caught testing around the Nurburgring. Of more interest to motoring enthusiasts would be the rumour that the hot hatch could churn out as much as 260bhp according to Autocar Magazine. This is much higher than the 220 bhp to 230bhp range that was originally expected. Perhaps, VW thought that they should step up their game as the Koreans are already generating 274bhp from a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit. If the rumour proved to be true, this would mean that the Golf R's replacement, which in its current form has a 266hp from a 2.0L turbo, would get well over 300bhp. More importantly, the front differential will get a new set up prevent wheel spin from the car
  9. [extract] I was visiting my friend in Tampines and chanced upon this set of rims fitted on a Kia Picanto. It looked somewhat familiar to me and after pondering for a few seconds, ah har! The design elements are derived from the
  10. The Volkswagen Golf GTI concept called the Golf GTI Excessive has been displayed at the annual Worthersee Show in Austria recently. The Worthersee Show started out as a gathering for Golf enthusiasts has now become an international gathering for Volkswagen and to a certain extent other cars within the Volkswagen-Audi Group. As such, this latest concept GTI follows a Volkswagen tradition of unveiling concept cars at this event. The Excessive is a concept Golf GTI intended to showcase the latest prototype range of accessories for the iconic hot hatch. It showcases a bodykit for aerodynamic and visual 'upgrades' and some mechanical modifications too. The add-ons claim to make the stock GTI into a more focused driver's car. And should they get a favourable response, Volkswagen will incorporate the new items into the latest list of accessories that a Golf GTI owner can buy for his or her car. The Excessive now has a lower front splitter, new look left and right air intakes that protrude further out, a new rear diffuser, titanium exhaust tips and arches. All purportedly make the Golf GTI slightly more aerodynamic than the stock version. Oh, those arches are not filled out very large 19inch BBS rims and tires, which should increase grip over the standard 17inch rims and tires setup. New spring and dampers round the handling package up. The earlier stated titanium exhaust tips aren't just hiding a stock system. The tips are part of a lightened sports exhaust system which somewhat add about 3ps to the 210ps that the stock Golf GTI makes. There are no other engine mods for this concept Golf. There are new sports seats added to this Golf Excessive, and some trimming. But nothing really out of the ordinary when it comes to the interior. Having driven a standard Mark 6 GTI recently I have to say that the modifications done by Volkswagen towards making the Golf GTI into a more focused car seems to be getting the car to handle the power, especially the torque the 2.0turbocharged engine produces. In the standard DSG equipped car the 280Nm of torque it produces does overwhelm the standard 17inch tires causing lots of wheelspin if you simply boot it out of a low speed tight corner or a junction. You have to be feed in the power to be smooth if not the traction control warning light simply flickers away as you brutally stomp on the throttle and power on out through a junction. More so in the wet. It however gives straight line thrills especially when flooring it at the traffic lights. The rest of the stock GTI is a very good piece of kit. It is stable at high speeds and directional changes and makes driving fast feel safe and confident when attacking corners. since as I stated it does overwhelm the front wheels. A front wheel drive with a lot of power does this. It is thrilling but pretty inefficient in laying down the power unless you feed it in gradually as stated above. I think that Volkswagen agrees with this fact as the more powerful and more torquey Golf R is all wheel drive. So, 19 inches rims and tires and the upgraded suspension would make the GTI able to reel in the turbocharged torque even better. It may make the GTI less thrilling with less wheelspin, but its a good thing when you're attacking tight corners than require you to be in the lower gears. These manufacturer upgrade items are the things that I'll be looking for if ever Volkswagen includes it in a package for the GTI. And I'd add that body kit too as the GTI is too subtle for me. Personally that is.
