BMW ActiveAssist and new control systems revolutionise Sheer Driving Pleasure
Akram_saheed posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
After years of research, BMW is aiming to bring the vision of accident-free mobility closer to reality via BMW ActiveAssist – a package of partially and highly automated driving technologies. The experts at BMW Group Research and Technology have built a research prototype which can pilot its way at high speeds with exceptional precision, adhere to a marked out circular course regardless of road surface, and execute an obstacle-evading lane change. http://dai.ly/x19dkpz Even when deliberately provoked into oversteer the highly automated prototype follows its path safely and along almost identical lines time after time. The sensors delivering the necessary information are akin to the standard fitted systems found on today’s vehicles. Back in October 2009 the BMW Group rolled out its BMW Track Trainer research project to showcase highly automated driving on the ideal line around the gruelling Nurburgring-Nordschleife, race track. Developed by engineers at BMW Group Research and Technology, the BMW Track Trainer later demonstrated its effectiveness on other circuits including the Laguna Seca and Hockenheimring, among others. The BMW Emergency Stop Assistant research project added further important insights to the knowledge pool. If the driver is weakened - for example by a medical emergency like a heart attack – the function switches the vehicle into highly automated driving mode, steer it safely to the side of the road and automatically activate an emergency call. In 2011 a test vehicle covered 65km on a multilane highway in automated mode. The research prototype accelerated, braked and overtook other cars along the way without any driver intervention – while observing traffic laws and keeping pace with the traffic at speeds of up to 130km/h. The prototype has since covered approximately 15,000km. Since February 2013 the BMW Group and Continental have been working together to introduce several test vehicles with close-to-production technology. The BMW Group’s next major goal is to introduce highly automated driving on European motorways and tackle the challenges - such as crossing national borders and negotiating roadworks- 6 comments

Car thieves shoot themselves with stolen cars, on Facebook!
RchLuvSlly posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
You know what they say, "Do whatever you want, just don't get caught!" Unfortunately (or thankfully, perhaps), these teenage car thieves in the United Kingdom don't seem quite knowledgeable about such a saying. Instead, these thieves just seemed so proud of their 'stealing' ability that they even shot pictures of themselves with the cars they had successfully stolen. What amazes me more is that they even posted the pictures on Facebook, a world renowned social media, and on their phones! This led the local police to catch them red-handed, or should I say, 'bread-handed' (you'll see why). It's a real 'shame' to the world of Grand Theft Auto. Speaking of Grand Theft Auto, it reminds me of the action adventure packed car theft game, the latest trailer of which will be shown on 30th April 2013. Alright, let's get back to topic. To be honest with you, these teenagers, aged from 18-23 years old, were quite an expert indeed. Comprising eight members, they managed to successfully steal nine high performance sports cars that were, and still are, very expensive. Porsches, Range Rovers, BMWs, and a Mercedes Coupe worth- 1 comment

At the recent 2011 Good Design Awards presented by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, no fewer than six BMW Group models received recognition. Of these, 4 are BMW automobiles while 2 are motorcycles. The automobiles include the BMW 6 Series Convertible, BMW 6 Series Coupe, BMW 1 Series M Coupe and BMW ActiveE while the bikes consist of the BMW K 1600 GT/GTL and BMW G650 GS. BMW Group Design has already won the coveted design award several times in the past. Last year it was the BMW 5 Series Sedan, the MINI Countryman, the BMW S 1000 RR and the BMW Concept 6 design study that captured the prestigious prize. The annual Good Design Award ranks as the most celebrated international accolade in the field of product design. The prize is awarded based on the criteria of functionality and aesthetics and is now complemented by an ecological aspect that stipulates sustainable design in keeping with our times. In the 2011 edition, the independent jury of design experts and architects had to go through more than 500 product designs and graphics from 38 countries before selecting the winners. These trademarked awards were created in Chicago in 1950 by three architects: Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. The Good Design Awards aim to give international recognition for designers and manufacturers when they devise innovative products through invention and originality, beyond what is considered ordinary product and consumer design. I was looking forward to Monday, 12 Dec 11, not because I missed my work so much but rather it is the first day of BMW Fascination Roadshow. I was there on Monday in order to beat the weekend crowd, which would facilitate photo taking. In addition to catching a glimpse of the futuristic BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept Car as shown above, I was there to collect the Team BMW finisher pack for the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore and to see the all-new BMW 1 series in flesh (or rather metal). The 1 series model on display is the 118i Sport. It comes equipped with the aggressive-looking Xenon light for both low-beam and high-beam. According to the technical data, the 116i Urban comes fitted with similar headlights as well. Looking at the dashboard layout, the 1 Series makes you feel like you are in a vehicle that is of a higher class. The chunky steering is nice to hold and it comes with red stitching. The upper dashboard is laid with soft-touch plastics but is letdown by the material at the lower portion (especially the glovebox), which feels a little hard. The plastics on the internal door panel should have utilized better soft-touch material as well. On a more positive note, the thick interior door handle gives a substantial feel to the car and the supportive rear bench can accommodate 3 adults comfortably. The red stitching throughout the interior reminds the passengers that they are in the sport version which sprints from 0 to 100km/h in a mere 7.5 secs. After surveying the 1 Series, I proceed to claim the finisher pack at the ticket counter, which consists of a pair of BMW slipper and towel. Both items feel

BMW enters the four-door coupe segment with the 6 Series Gran Coupe
SYF77 posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
[extract] Mercedes has the CLS, Volkswagen has the CC, Porsche has the Panamera and Audi has the A7. Now, BMW has joined the four-door coupe craze with the 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe by adding a rear bench and two additional doors. Compared to its two-door counterpart, the Gran Coupe is 4.4 inches longer. Like the rest of the 6 Series range, the Gran Coupe is based on the same platform as the brand-
