Where the 5 Series excels in luxurious comfort and quality, the M5 bleeds performance and excitement. The BMW 5 Series is certainly one of the go-to choices when it comes to the luxury sedan segment, thanks to its ample practicality, elevated luxury and keen driveability. The M5 Competition, at almost twice the price and more than three times the power, is clearly a different proposition altogether. With ballistic pace and intense dynamic capability, the M5 is capable of delivering a level of performance that sets the heart racing. At the same time, because it shares a visual similarity to a standard 5 Series, there’s also a unassuming nature to the car – a sleeper car, in some eyes. And yet, considering these cars share the same fundamental underpinnings (the 5 Series body type), there’s perhaps more overlap in the way they are used than you’d expect. Our two drivers find out just how distinct the driving experiences and expectations with the two cars are. Smooth Sailing vs High Tailing For Jeremy, the 5 Series is all about comfort and smooth driving. And when you have kids and family to think about, you really just want a refined and serene driving experience. It’s bad enough to have to deal with the noise from the kids. The car’s 2.0-litre powertrain delivers ample juice, but importantly the mild-hybrid system means that engine start-stop is seamless, which makes for an even more refined and comfortable driving experience. Desmond understands that there are few opportunities to fully deploy all of the M5’s power. However, the M5 demonstrates a significant improvement in refinement levels compared to its predecessor, especially with the new 8-speed auto transmission and adaptive suspension. As a result, driving it daily is surprisingly easy. And of course, with a V8 under the bonnet, the M5 makes for impeccably quick journeys to get your places faster, even without having to drive like a maniac. Long alrighty vs Lord almighty For Jeremy, it is the long-legged nature of the 5 Series that makes long drives a delightful experience. Whether it’s the 40 minute commute to the in-laws’ place or the four hour commute to KL, the 5 Series will ensure that both driver and passengers get there as fresh as when they left. For Desmond, the M5 is a ballistic dynamic weapon for when the opportunity calls. With 625bhp and 750Nm of torque, all-wheel drive, and complex chassis systems, the M5 ensures a razor-sharp driving experience that is both exciting and involving. It’s a car that’s immediately ready for the racetrack, and always raring to give you a heart-pumping experience. Practical vs practicality A family car must first and foremost be practical. The 5 Series boasts a large 530-litre boot that will regularly be filled with things, whether it’s the kid’s belongings or just personal items. Isofix points also allow the securing of child seats, which is important to Jeremy when taking the family out for a nice dinner on weekends. Even though performance is front and centre, the M5 doesn’t skimp on practicality. Boot space is unchanged from the 5 Seires, which means that Desmond can still use this car for grocery runs, or even to take his wheelchair bound grandmother out. The generous space in the rear of the cabin also means outings with friends is easy to organise. With the M5, it’s really a sports car, minus the stereotypical sports car inconveniences. Made it vs crave it Beyond just being a highly luxurious, practical, comfortable and thoroughly high-tech family car, owning a 5 Series is also about the feel-good factor. For Jeremy, driving it imparts a sense of accomplishment. Is it a status symbol? Sure, it is. But more importantly, it is an indication of personal and professional success. It’s a big step upwards, and forwards. The M5 is a lot of car. Some may argue too much car. But when you desire something that offers both intoxicating performance and surefooted sensibility like Desmond does, the M5’s ability to do both in abundance is a key part of its appeal. And of course, it also occupies a rarefied place, not just among the M model lineup, but among performance cars in general. That is its own allure. Conclusion With the 5 Series and the M5, though the cars may be related and share common underpinnings, they cater to fundamentally different expectations for different types of drivers. Where the 5 Series is focused on delivering a sense of everyday quality, comfort and serenity, the M5 is tuned for excitement, engagement and enjoyment. -

Is the BMW M5 or the Mercedes-AMG E63 S a better sideways machine

With both the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-AMG E63 S having a horsepower output around the 600 mark, both should have ample power to drift. And with both having the latest all-wheel drive system that allows the driver to disengage its front axle fully, it is only right that someone finds out with car is the better sideways king. BMW has launched the M5 Nighthawk special edition specifically for the Japan market. Only 10 units will be built. On the outside, the Nighthawk is painted in 'Frozen Black'. The 20-inch alloy wheels, grille, door handles, mirror caps and exhaust tips are finished in dark chrome. I believe this is a car that The Dark Knight (Batman) would love to drive. The leather seats and door panels and dashboard are tastefully finished with a bright Sakiru orange shade. One can also find the usual M Performance carbon trimmings in the cabin. The M5 Nighthawk is equipped with the Competition Package which boosts the output of the 4.4-litre bi-turbo V8 from 552bhp to 567bhp. Mated to a seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission, the high-performance sedan storms from standstill to 100km/h in a mere 4.2 seconds. The package also includes new coil springs, damper calibrations and anti-sway bars. These adjustments resulted in lowering of the car by about 10 millimetres, which lowers the center of gravity and body roll. The new M5 special edition model is priced at 18,200,000 Yen (S$229,283) in Japan.

The ever popular movie 'The Fast and the Furious' is about to come to its 6th installment. As a matter of fact, you'll be witnessing 'Fast and Furious 6' on the silver screen worldwide starting May 24th. As always, we've got used to sports, exotic, and tuned cars in the series. However, we've never got to see a BMW M5 in them in spite of what the car has to offer. With that being said, it's about time the model makes its debut. So, in this 6th installment, besides other very interesting cars, there'll be around a dozen of BMW M5s. Nonetheless, don't expect to see the current model as all those 12 cars will be the V10-revving E60 model. Personally, I think the model looks attractive even when it is in a complete standstill mode, not to mention when it is involved in a highly intense full throttle action thriller. The design cues are attractive, both on the front and rear fascias, so attractive that some people in Indonesia even nicknamed it 'the eagle eye'. Unfortunately, according to 'Fast and Furious 6' Car Coordinator, Dennis McCarthy, the person in charge of setting up the cars for you to see on the big screen, most of the 'eagle eyes' had to be destroyed while filming. BMW Group Asia retains its crown as best selling automotive brand in Singapore

BMW Group Asia has sustained its lead as both a premium and overall automotive brand in Singapore with a total of 2,647 vehicles registered based on LTA figures for New Registration of Cars. The BMW 5 Series continues to be the top selling model with the recently introduced ActiveHybrid 5 expected to provide a further boost. The range topping M5 has also seen success with more than 50 units already sold since its launch, while the new 3 Series and the flagship 7 Series limousine significantly contributing to sales figures. More exciting products will be arriving on the coming months as BMW gets on with its second phase of EfficientDynamics strategy by introducing ActiveHybrid 3 and 7 models after the successful introduction of the ActiveHybrid 5. Moreover BMW will also introduce the M Performance Automobiles with exclusive engine variants, enhanced agility and precision for a greater performance without compromising on everyday use. MINI has also performed well with a total of 150 vehicles registered. The MINI Clubvan, a premium model in the small car-based van segment, will also arrive later this year and targets the trend-conscious commercial vehicle users. -
BMW M5 M Performance Edition The F10M generation M5 has been on sale recently and already BMW has announced a M5 M Performance edition in the UK. Revealed through a YouTube teaser video, the enhanced M5 will be available in three Frozen (matt) body colours: red, white and blue. Production will be extremely scarce at 30 units; ten vehicles for each color. Though there might not be any performance upgrades, with the stock M5 containing a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine, with a beastly 552hp and 680Nm of torque. BMW M3 M Performance Edition Also revealed through YouTube is the M3 M Performance Edition. Like the M5, a total of 30 examples will be made in a similar red, white and blue colour finishes. Changes seem purely cosmetic as performance is expected to be similar to the standard M3's 4.0-litre V8 with 414 horses. However expect a high-spec equipment list to be offered as standard, and upgraded braking and suspension systems. Check out the blacked out grille as well, though it makes the famed 'kidney-grille' looks bigger. Nonetheless, in my fantasy world where I am King, I'll take the M5 in blue and the M3 in red, thank you.

You see, every time there is one of those international race events held at the Sepang F1 Circuit over in Malaysia there are bound to be many pseudo-race drivers acting out their dreams by becoming the Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel or Nikki Lauda on the highways that lead away from the circuit. The Miramas circuit is where BMW bring most of their new models for testing and as you can see from the video, they have water sprinklers, chicanes, a 6km oval and most importantly, lots and lots of corners for the new M5 to dance around. Its still under a slight camouflage job around the side skirts and all but how much different can it get from the current 5 series? The special ingredient comes underneath its sculpted bonnet and that is a 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 which is mated to a 7 speed dual clutch gear box. Not much else is revealed but what i love the most is seeing the white smoke of burning rubber coming off those rear wheels and the new M5 sliding around corners ever so gracefully is just epic! And you'll also find out that the M5 is faster than its predecessor, topping off at 306km/h or 190mph. Can't wait for it to be released and shipped over to our little island. Its roar is just too addictive..

BMW has officially ended production of the E60 BMW M5 after five years of production. 20,548 units of the fourth-generation M5 were assembled during this time, the majority of which were saloons. Only 1,025 BMW M5 Touring units were built since the five-door's release in 2007. The E60 M5 featured a 5.0-liter V10 petrol engine that delivers 509 horsepower, and up to 520Nm of torque. Mated to either a seven-speed SMG or six-speed manual transmission, the car was capable of a 0-100 km/h time of 4.2 seconds. Though the car was theoretically able to hit 337 km/h, its speed was electronically-limited to 249 km/h. BMW will likely begin modifying their Dingolfing, Germany, factory to prepare for the F10 M5 production. The fifth-generation M5 is expected to get the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 found in the X5 M and X6 M. It will potentially be tuned to deliver 570 hp and up to 680Nm of torque.

Having introduced the next generation 5-Series sedan, BMW's M division is now concentrating on the development of the flagship version of the series, the M5. The hotly anticipated M5 will make its first public appearance at the 2010 Geneva Show in March next year. The Bavarian automaker has decided to power the new M5 using the new 4.4L bi-turbo V8 that debuted in the X5M and X6M, ditching the current model's exotic V10 powerplant. In the X5M and X6M, the bi-turbocharged unit produces an output of 555 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 680Nm of peak torque, available between 1,500 and 5,650 rpm. In comparison, the current M5's naturally aspirated V10 makes 507HP and 520Nm of peak torque. Details on the new M5's engine specs remain scarce, though it has been suggested that the direct-injection V8 may be further honed, boosting output closer to the 600HP mark. The new V8 will not only be more powerful than the V10, but also more compact in size, lighter in weight and more fuel efficient with lower CO2 emissions. Along with the new powerplant, the 2011 M5 will get a re-engineered version of the BWM M3's seven-speed twin-clutch transmission (DCT). The new M5 will benefit from suspension, brake and steering system upgrades to further improve handling and driver's feedback. Recently, it has been announced in the news that Singapore will be getting a dedicated dealership specializing in BMW's M division automobiles. This new M5 will probably be the most hotly anticipated model in the Lion City's very own M division showroom. For all you M5 fans out there, probably it's time to start saving up!

Spyshots of the 2010 BMW M3 facelift were posted onto the web last week. If you were expecting those aggressive looking contour lines that appeared on the hood of the 2009 BMW 3 series sedans, you can forget it. The Bavarian manufacturer didn't bother with those. The flagship M3 only received minor changes to its front bumper and a new LED tail-light arrangement. Most changes were made on the inside with better trim, improved iDrive system and better interior lighting. BMW designers seem to be picking up a thing or two from the people at Porsche...haha
