  1. Two dead bodies found in Kovan within 1km of each other Published on Jul 10, 2013 8:01 PM Two dead bodies were found in Kovan about a kilometre from each other. A blood trail could be seen between a private house on Hillside Drive and outside Kovan MRT station on Upper Serangoon Road, where each of the bodies were believed to have been found. Officers from the Crime Investigation Department were on the scene on Wednesday evening, and a lane along Upper Serangoon Road was blocked off. An eyewitness said that she saw a man being dragged by a car while she was driving. About 20 cars were honking loudly at the driver but he or she did not stop, said the eyewitness. http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...-other-20130710 robbery-cum-murder???
  2. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_707744.html Why opposition MPs can't be advisers to grassroots bodies WE REFER to Mr Muhammad Yusuf Osman's letter yesterday ('Advisers to grassroots bodies should be elected MPs'). The mission of the People's Association (PA) and its grassroots organisations (GROs) is to bond the community and connect people with the Government. PA and its GROs serve all residents regardless of their political affiliations in fulfilling their role. Grassroots advisers are appointed by PA, a statutory board. Besides connecting people to people, grassroots advisers are required to help the Government connect with people and help promote government policies and programmes such as anti-dengue and active ageing. Hence, the Government has to appoint grassroots advisers who support its programmes and can play this role well. Opposition MPs cannot be expected to do this and thus cannot become advisers to GROs. 4. I think this is suggestion is too far fetched. This is the untouchable, cast-in-stone and ultimate sacred cow system that the ruling party will not touch at all. How is it even possible given that the grassroots have been serving them so well, despite some hiccups in the last GE, that the MIWs will even want to consider it? Then again, I may be wrong... http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_675943.html Jun 4, 2011 Delink political affiliations of grassroots bodies I REFER to Monday's report ('PM: Unfair to criticise grassroots activists'). Being a grassroots volunteer myself, I could not help but feel that debating whether the grassroots activists are telling MPs the truth is just barking up the wrong tree. There is simply no incentive for grassroots activists to tell MPs things they like to hear. Unfortunately, grassroots activists have to face the reality of often being misunderstood, suspected of and sometimes even ridiculed for serving only the ruling party, rather than the people. For grassroots organisations to be relevant and credible, there is a dire need for them to be dissociated from all political affiliations. As a politically neutral individual, it had not been an easy decision for me to join the neighbourhood committee. However, my desire to serve was stronger than the negative feelings I had of grassroots organisations. Sadly, many capable and passionate people in my neighbourhood just refuse to step forward to serve because of the image of such organisations. I would like to suggest that the People's Association (PA) be run like a civil service organisation in order to single-mindedly and unmistakably carry out its sole purpose of serving the people. Board members of the PA should not hold any political office. There is then no conflict of interests. Chang Nam Yuen
