  8. The Volkswagen Polo has been named the 2010 World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show. VW's car beat out two other finalists, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Toyota Prius, to win the award. 30 vehicles had originally been nominated for the prize, a list that was whittled down until the three finalists were announced last month. To be considered for the award, a vehicle had to be in production and sold on at least two different continents in 2009. At least 500 units of each nominated vehicle had to be produced in 2009 to qualify. “Holding its own in the most competitive market segment, the all-new Polo MkV is one of VW’s star performers," a representitive of the jury said in a press release. "Draped in head-turning stylish curves, the Polo is certainly one of the classiest small VWs ever built. It’s also safe; generating a maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating. Behind the wheel, the Polo demonstrates mature manners and boasts a superb driving position that’s adjustable and, in common with the latest Golf, all the controls are well weighted and precise." "The Polo is just one brilliant supermini.” The award is voted on by a jury of 59 automotive experts from around the world, though only one juror was from Africa or South America. Collectively, they narrowed the field from 30 to ten in January, before choosing the finalists a month later. Previous award winners include the VW Golf, Mazda2/Demio, Lexus LS460, BMW 3-Series, and Audi A6. Separately, the jury awarded the Chevrolet Camaro with the World Car Design of the Year prize, and the entire Volkswagen BlueMotion lineup as World Green Car of the Year. The jury did not disclose why they picked the BlueMotion Golf, Passat, and Polo collectively, instead of choosing a single vehicle.
  9. Sure a not? Sedan car of the year 2012
  10. The riggings makes no sense. Why? For now it seems to be a whim of the departed director on which car makes the list. No mention of the manufacturers playing a part in this.
  11. After the dust has settled down, I'm sure some of you might be curious as to how we've arrived at the results of sgCarMart's Cars Of The Year 2010. You can check out all the glitz and glamour here, but for the benefit of some people, let's revisit them once again. The Criteria We've used a total of eight criteria to determine our Cars Of The Year, and the first seven are as follows: - Views on model on sgCarMart.com - Price - Features (sunroof, push start button, smart key, electric seats, etc) - Performance (cc, turbo, engine type, top speed, acceleration, etc) - Fuel economy - Size - Safety features Each of them accounted for 10% of the score. That, of course, adds up to 70%. The final 30% comes from the last criteria, which comes from Consumer Voting. This gives the power to you, the viewers and readers, to determine sgCarMart's Cars Of The Year. Next, the categories. In this increasingly complicated world, it's hard to pigeonhole cars into specific classes nowadays. So, we've decided to keep it simple, and classify the entries into six basic categories, namely sedan, luxury sedan, hatchback, Sports-Utility Vehicle (SUV), Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), and sports. However, even within each category there are a wide variety of cars to choose from, from both ends of the value spectrum. Therefore, for fairness, we've further divided each category into Premium and Normal classes. Making The Decision Apart from the thorough research and the in-depth judging criteria that were conducted for the contest, we worked out and based our choices on the ever-so-passionate testing and thorough reviews of almost every car make and model in the industry. Of course, it can't be just our opinions. As set out above, you, the readers, have a say as well through your voting. To thank you for your participation and support, we offered prizes to a few lucky voters, and you guys certainly didn't let us down. The Results When the votes were in and tallied, there were a few surprises. Needless to say, not everyone agreed, but the people have spoken. And the winners are... Hatchback - Honda Jazz Hatchback (Premium) - Volkswagen Golf Sedan - Mazda2 Sedan Sedan (Premium) - Mazda3 Sedan Luxury Sedan - Volvo S60 Luxury Sedan (Premium) - Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sports-Utility Vehicle - Honda CR-V Sports-Utility Vehicle (Premium) - Audi Q5 Multi-Purpose Vehicle - Honda Stream Multi-Purpose Vehicle (Premium) - Toyota Alphard Sports - Volkswagen Scirocco R Sports (Premium) - Audi RS5 Coupe Conclusion It had been a tough contest, but in the end, I'm sure everyone involved felt that it was worth the effort. As you can see from the pictures, the winners were certainly pleased too. We look forward to more and better contests in the coming year, and you can guarantee that sgCarMart's Cars Of The Year 2011 will be as fiercely competitive and exciting as 2010's, or even more. See you next year!

  13. After winning this year's European Car of the Year and World Car of the Year awards, the Volkswagen Golf has picked up its third - the annual Car of the Year Japan award. The Volkswagen Golf achieved a first in the 34-year history of the Car of the Year Japan awards by winning the coveted title in a ceremony held in conjunction with the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. No foreign car has won the award, till now. In a contest that was expected to see the Golf trade blows with the Honda Fit/Jazz for honours, the Golf polled strongly from the outset and ended up amassing a commanding 504 out of a possible 600 points from the 60 jurors in attendance. The Fit/Jazz came in second with 373 votes while the Volvo V40 followed with 167 votes. "This is a very special award for us in so many ways. Firstly, our Golf 7 has become the first ever imported car to win Japan's COTY award, and we achieved this in our 60th year since Volkswagen imports started into Japan," commented Shigeru Shoji, President of Volkswagen Japan. Explaining its decision, the jury highlighted in particular the new Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) as a core strength of the Golf. The MQB formed the basis for precise handling with simultaneously high levels of ride comfort and driving pleasure, the jurors said. Further features to earn praise included the excellent standard of safety, the clear and clean design, the high-quality interior and exterior finish and the highly modern TSI engines. In three new minor awards that were introduced this year, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV picked up the 'Innovation Award', the Mazda6 won the 'Emotional Award' and the jointly developed Suzuki Spacia and Mazda Flair Wagon captured the 'Small Mobility Award'. The 'Special Achievement Award' went to the Daihatsu Move for its front seat lift design, technology created to assist senior citizens and people with disabilities.
  14. The Seat Leon has won the prestigious Car of the Year 2013 prize at the annual Auto Express New Car Awards in London earlier this week. The award was handed over to new Seat Chairman Jurgen Stackmann during a ceremony in London by Auto Express Editor-in-Chief Steve Fowler. The Leon also scooped up the Best Compact Family Car award. Explaining why the Leon was crowned the year's best car by the U.K.'s best selling motoring weekly, Steve Fowler said, "We love its style, the way it drives, the quality and the kit. Best of all, you get all that at a bargain price, while running costs will be ultra low, too. The SEAT Leon has beaten some superb cars to be crowned Car of the Year - it's that good," Jurgen Stackmann thanked the Auto Express jury for choosing the Leon as Car of the Year. "The new Leon is the best vehicle in Seat's history. It is a perfect embodiment of Seat's transformation and shows the direction we will be taking over the next few years. We are very pleased with the reception customers have given the Leon," said the Seat Chairman. The new Seat Leon was unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show and hit U.K. showrooms in March 2013. 15. The 2012 World Car of the Year awards have been presented at the New York Auto Show to celebrate the efforts for a great year past. Top honours went to the Volkswagen Up! which was declared the World Car of the Year, beating 34 other contenders as well as two finalists - the BMW 3 Series and Porsche 911 - to land the prestigious award. The Porsche 911 took the crown for the World Performance Car of the Year, beating the likes of Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 and McLaren MP4-12C among some 19 entries. On the other hand, the Mercedes S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was named the World Green Car of the Year. Despite only averaging 5.7 litres/100km beating Ford Focus Electric and Peugeot 3008 Hybrid to the accolade. Lastly, the Range Rover Evoque won World Car Design of the Year. As the only non-German champion, the crossover was praised for being stylish and "contemporary."
  16. The finalists for the 2011 World Car of the Year have been announced, with the winner to be revealed at the New York International Auto Show on April 21st. Two very diverse cars, at the opposite end on the car spectrum, lead the nominations with two each. The electric Nissan Leaf is in contention with for the main World Car of the Year Award, alongside two German sedans, the Audi A8 and the BMW 5-Series. The Leaf has already won the prestegious European Car of the Year, so it remains to be seen whether it can complete a double. In addition, the Leaf is also nominated in the World Green Car of the Year award, with the Chevrolet Volt and BMW 320d EfficientDynamics. That promises to be quite a battle, with all three cars having very good credentials to win the award on their own merit. The other car with a double nomination is the Ferrari 458 Italia, which is entered in the World Performance Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year categories. In the Performance Car category, the 458 Italia is up against fellow supercar heavyweights like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the Porsche 911 Turbo, while in the Design category, the Ferrari battles the likes of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and the Aston Martin Rapide. To be honest, I personally feel that the World Car of the Year Awards are a bit dubious. Perhaps it's because the WCOTY is a relatively new award, having only been around since 2005, and thus lack the credibility of more established awards like the European or Japanese COTY, which have been running for decades. The criteria for nomination also seems a bit vague and open, with the only requirement being that the car has to be sold in in at least five countries on two continents to be considered. This means a huge selection of cars sold around the world are eligible for contention. I mean, the Suzuki SX4(!) was nominated as a finalist once, believe it or not. The result is that the nominations, and some winners, come across as a bit strange sometimes. Past winners have ranged from cars as diverse as the Lexus LS460 to the Mazda 2. This year's one isn't much better, with an electric car competing against two large German sedans. How fair is that? It seems like the WCOTY is a primarily American-organised award, which sometimes result in an American bias in the nominations and winners. That's just my opinion though. Nevertheless, whether you agree or not, it might be worthwhile to have a look at the finalists again, in pictures: World Car of the Year Audi A8 BMW 5-Series Nissan Leaf World Performance Car of the Year Ferrari 458 Italia Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Porsche 911 Turbo World Green Car of the Year BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition Chevrolet Volt Nissan Leaf World Car Design of the Year Alfa Romeo Giulietta Aston Martin Rapide Ferrari 458 Italia
  17. The Audi A1 has been named What Car? Car of the Year, beating strong competition from the Ford Mondeo and Seat Alhambra. Last year, it won What Car? Reader Award for the most exciting car to be launched in 2010. Audi's smallest car to date went on sale at the end of 2010 and has already proved incredibly popular with buyers. The hugely popular Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 140 Zetec picked up two awards for Best Family Car and Best Estate Car. The Jaguar XF was crowned Best Executive Car for the fourth time for its looks, drivability and pricing. The Volkswagen Golf won Small Family Car for the fifth year running, a feat matched by the Mercedes S-Class which was named Best Luxury Car. The judges praised the Mercedes limousine for its lavish equipment levels and its class-leading blend of ride quality and handling. This year's Reader Award went to the new Range Rover Evoque, ahead of its sales date. The British-built, all-electric Nissan Leaf was awarded the new Ultra-Low-Carbon-Car Award. Speaking of tight competition, it's apparent that Mazda CX-7, Nissan Murano and the Honda CR-V are having a close one too. These million dollar questions to be answered by the 15th of December 2010.
