  1. OK, I am not referring to Anti-lock Braking System but Auto-Brewery Syndrome. I didn't know about it until I read the following news. Have to say he is damn sway to be caught 3 times for drunk driving, when he is actually did not consume any alcohol. Belgian man whose body brews alcohol beats drink-driving rap BRUSSELS: A Belgian man with a very rare metabolic condition that causes his body to produce alcohol had a drink-driving charge against him dismissed in court on Monday (Apr 23). The 40-year-old proved that he has auto-brewery syndrome (ABS) which causes carbohydrates in his stomach to be fermented, increasing ethanol levels in his blood and resulting in signs of intoxication. His lawyer, Anse Ghesquiere, confirmed the unusual case to AFP after Belgian media reported on it. She said scientists believe that the number of ABS cases in the world is underestimated. Currently, only some 20 people globally have been officially diagnosed with the condition. She stressed that her client – whose identity was not given – gave evidence of his ABS after tests run by three doctors. The court recognised that factors unforeseen by law applied to the man's case and acquitted him of the charge. He ended up in court after police in April 2022 pulled his vehicle over and registered him giving a breathalyser reading of 0.91ml of alcohol per litre, and again a month later when his breath contained 0.71ml. The legal limit in Belgium is 0.22ml per litre of air exhaled, which corresponds to a blood alcohol level of 0.5g per litre. Previously, in 2019, the man had received a fine and a driving licence suspension despite protesting that he had not drunk any alcohol. He was apparently unaware of his syndrome before his latest run-in with police. Ghesquiere said she and her client were awaiting formal notification of the acquittal. She noted that the prosecution service had a month to lodge an appeal if it wished to do so. The man meanwhile was following a carbohydrate-light diet to avoid his stomach producing more alcohol. I can imagine people like our @mersaylee will be secretly wishing to have this ABS, so that he will not longer be subjected to wife's control on his alcohol intake. But hor he will soon look like the one in his avatar.
  2. A Mercedes-Benz C180 was caught swerving abruptly between lanes from Punggol Road all the way to Rivervale Lane. This led to netizen suspicions that the driver was operating the vehicle under the influence. Watch the video for yourself below: 293321461_569060238102925_3729722432454140138_n.mp4 At the end of the video, the driver comes out of the car and stumbles toward the cam car. It’s highly suspected that the driver must be under some kind of influence, this behaviour does not seem like something a sober person would do It’s also ridiculous how he managed to feel entitled enough to be angry at the cam car driver despite him being the one driving recklessly on the road. Some people do deserve to be knocked down a few pegs. But, as always, there's two sides to a coin. It is uncertain as to what happened prior to the start of the video. Maybe the cam car driver antagonised the C180 driver? Netizen Comments Netizens have expressed their suspicions of the Mercedes driver being under the influence, as well as criticizing him for playing the victim I hope this man can receive the proper punishment that he deserves after endangering other lives on the road. ========= Be the first to get the latest road/ COE news, and get first dibs on exclusive promos and giveaways in our Telegram SGCM Community. 3. How it all began [December 2017] I had a couple of beers with some friends at a bar along Beach Road. Christmas was around the corner, the festive mood had set in and spirits were high. Now when I say "a couple of beers", I probably had like 5 standard glasses (if we're being specific). I left the bar around 11.30pm to head to another location to meet a different group of friends. These are just some of the phrases I told my friends before getting into my car. I was young-er, carefree, ignorant and stupid. And I got caught. Why so stupid? The reasons that I used to convince myself that drink driving was okay seem pretty dumb to me today [2020]. 1. If I met a girl, I could impress her with my car and driving skills even though I was intoxicated 2. I felt like I could save money by driving by wasting money on a taxi or private hire 3. You don’t have to “fight” with hundreds of other people trying to get a taxi or private hire car at the same time as you 4. It’s easier and convenient to go to the next drinking location How I got caught drink driving My other appointment was somewhere in the West. I didn’t think that there would be a roadblock set up before 12 midnight! Or at least, not along the usual route I took. I was wrong. When you see a roadblock after drinking, let me tell you that it’s one of the worst combinations of feelings (easily top 10) you’ll ever feel as a person. The gut-wrenching fear, the sweaty palms, the increased heart rate and adrenaline all hits you at once. On top of the buzz you're feeling from the alcohol, that's one #$%^$% up emotional cocktail that no one should go through. Roadblocks are strategically placed so that you have no where to run. You can try and do a 3-point turn and drive against traffic but you'll still get caught eventually (those motorbikes are fast). If you’re unfortunate enough to get the iconic “Asian flush” (like I do) after drinking, there’s nowhere you can hide. I tried to mask the smell of alcohol by lighting up a cigarette, but the officer did not buy it one bit. What you should do The standard question they will ask: You have 2 choices right there n then; lie or tell the truth. If you lie and they find out that you’ve been drinking after conducting an alcohol breath test, you’ll be handcuffed and brought away, no questions asked. If you tell them the truth (like I did), they’ll give you the decency of not handcuffing you, but you’ll still get sent to lock up if you fail the breath test. The police will then ask if there’s anyone who can drive your car away or they will tow it somewhere. I managed to find a couple of SOBER friends who did me a solid and took my car for me. What happened next was probably the longest 8 to 9 hours of my life. I had a "free taxi ride" to the Police Station in Ubi I was processed and thrown into a holding cell I needed to use the toilet, but they sent a guard with me to ensure I didn’t drink any water (I’ll get to this in a bit) I had to wait for 5 to 6 hours before an Investigating Officer (IO) saw me I was only released 1 to 2 hours after my “interview” with the IO Alcohol Breath Test If you fail the breath test at the roadblock, the Police will conduct another one while you’re in lock up. Think of that as your second chance. If you pass, you will probably get a warning and they'll let you go. The reason why they assigned a guard to follow me to the toilet was so that I wouldn’t drink tap water to lower my alcohol percentage in my breath. I even contemplated drinking toilet bowl water, but the thought of that (even today), is still a disgusting one. It’s no surprise that I failed the second alcohol breath test (my reading was 51ug). The prescribed limit is 35 microgrammes (ug) per 100 millimetres (ml) of breath. Drink Driving Penalties Between 35 – 54 ug: $1,000 to $2,000 in fines, and a driving ban of 12 to 18 months Between 55 – 69 ug: $2,000 to $3,000 in fines, and a driving ban for 18 to 24 months Between 70 – 89 ug: $3,000 to $4,000 in fines, and a driving ban for 24 to 36 months At least 90 ug: $4,000 to $5,000 in fines, and a driving ban for 36 to 48 months or longer *Applicable to first-time offenders only I had to appear in court sometime in January 2018, and I got hit with a $2000 fine and a driving ban of 18 months (the maximum punishment for people within the 1st tier). Lessons learnt The worst thing about having a driving ban of more than 11 months is that you will have to retake EVERYTHING! Your Basic Theory, Final Theory and Practical Driving Test. Include the $2000 fine, and you’re paying a lot of money for your stupidity. Should have just paid the $15 for a cab right? I hope by writing this, I will be able to dissuade people from drink driving and not make the same costly (not to mention, dangerous) mistake I made. Thanks for reading and drive safe! [July 2020]
  4. No RIP from me. Luckily his friend and valet didn't die with him http://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore-news/drunk-driver-who-died-insisted-taking-over-valet?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook
  5. Some couples like to make out in their vehicle. That is perfectly fine if the vehicle is not on the move. However, it may turn out to be a dangerous act if the man is driving at the same time. This is the case involving a Mexican man named Luis Briones who faces multiple charges as he found drink driving and having sex at the same time. The female passenger was ejected from the Ford Explorer after the accident. She suffered deep cuts on her face and head, and was found naked outside the SUV. The 25-year old Briones tried to drive away from the scene of the accident, leave his passenger behind but a witness pulled the keys away from the ignition. He was later apprehended behind a cactus with only one shoe on and his shorts inside-out. So, no matter how hot your lady passenger is, concentrate on the task at hands. Other things can wait.
  6. A Wisconsin man decided to flex his newly-acquired beer muscles by testing his newly-acquired track-ready Mustang on a local street. He lost control, hit a Jeep Grand Cherokee and ricochet into a tree. The 35-year-old man now faces charges after he allegedly downed up to ten beers at a cookout, then took his $50,000 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca for a joyride. Police say he was traveling at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour when he went into a spin. The subsequent crash ripped off the driver's side door, and a passenger suffered a compound fracture in his right arm. The Mustang owner's been charged with one count of first offense operating while intoxicated and causing injury, along with one count of reckless driving and causing injury for good measure. He could get two years in jail if he's convicted.
  7. [extract] -using this while driving is as good as having a few bottles of anything alcoholic according to two spoilsports. Recently a study was made on the concentration of people using a phone in the car, even while using a hands-free device. The study found that braking reaction time and driving skill were impaired in almost all motorists who took part in the study. Two scientists, Jason Watson and David Strayer, psychologists at the University of Utah, located in the land of cheeseburgers and fries, asked 200 volunteers to drive along a motorway in simulator. Braking reaction time, following distance, memory and the ability to do a simple sum were all measured. The subjects were then asked to repeat the process but this time they were asked to conduct a phone conversation which involved memorizing certain words and carrying out more mathematical problems. Their findings, to be published in the Psychonomic Bulletin and Review (a journal that isn
