  2. Sleeping Chinese man robbed of life savings as smartphone’s facial recognition system is caught napping ZHEJIANG (China) — A facial recognition system failed to protect a Chinese man from a pair of sneak thieves who managed to unlock his phone while he was sleeping and steal his life savings of more 12,000 yuan (S$2,421), according to a local television news report. The man from Zhejiang province, identified only as Mr Yuan, contacted the police on Tuesday after noticing the money had disappeared from his bank account, the report said. Following an investigation, officers charged Mr Yuan’s two roommates with the theft, saying they unlocked the phone while the victim was sleeping and used WeChat Pay to transfer the funds to their own accounts. The stolen cash was later returned to Mr Yuan. The report did not name the brand of phone, but an unnamed police officer said it cost about 1,000 yuan. “It seems the facial recognition feature on Mr Yuan’s phone isn’t very reliable,” he said. “We conducted our own tests and found you could unlock it even with the eyes closed.” Many smartphones are fitted with a facial recognition system as a security device, but not all require iris scanning, so they can be unlocked more easily. China leads the world in facial recognition technology and it is rapidly becoming a feature of people’s day-to-day lives. Biometric computer applications that cross-reference huge databases of digital images and employ a variety of technologies, including iris scanning, are now widely used by security and surveillance teams to spot everyone from suspected criminals to jaywalkers Mr Tan Jianfeng, founder of Shanghai Zhongren Network Security, said that while fingerprint and facial recognition systems were useful, people should continue to use personal identification numbers to keep their personal data and finances safe. “If a password is lost, you can change it, but biometric information is not reproducible,” he said. “Once it has been leaked, you can’t get a new face. In the era of big data, once a biometric authentication has been completed all of that information is converted into machine code – and as long as it is in that form it can be intercepted.” In 2015, China’s Ministry of Public Security launched a project to build the world’s most powerful facial recognition database Its aim is to be able to identify any of the country’s more than 1.3 billion citizens — by matching facial scans with the images on their identity cards — within three seconds and with an accuracy rate of 90 per cent. Meanwhile, Chinese technology companies like Tencent, which developed WeChat Pay, have adopted facial recognition systems for use in retail, travel and mobile payments. People can also now withdraw cash from ATMs using facial recognition. SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
  3. More changes to come for those boarding/landing flights from Changi Airport Terminal 4. To be more exact, the 6 months trial already started on the 25th of November. Went to Bangkok recently via AirAsia (Terminal 4) and was actually my first visit to T4. Pleasantly surprised that it is completely self-service and seamless from the check in kiosk, to the printing of boarding pass, baggage tag, bag drop machine. But these are not completely unique as other terminals like T1 if not all, already have have similar automations too. Even the biometrics used to scan passports are different in T4, albeit a little more inconvenient as we are required to remove our entire passport cover to scan. Not forgetting the automated security checks for baggage after clearing immigration. How cool. If I don't travel more often, I'm gonna be even more surprised with all the upgrades of our airports.

  5. Hi all, wish to consult you guys on one matter, to cut a long story short. my !@#@!$ wife went to some kinda free facial trial, (didn't do in the end) then sweet talk, sweet talk sign this $2800 plan. i OT, so she went alone, if not i definately will not allow her to make such a hasty decision. Its not exactly malicious or bad-apple company, but due to certain medical condition, i think i should bring the leaflets of chemicals compounds used to my doctor to let him see if the facial chemicals might/will/should complicate existing conditions. and of cos, the sales person say, "can one, no problem one." whoever did sale b4 will know the convince-confuse-con rule. (sorry to sterotype) angry for 1) make decision never consult me (although she never say i pay) 2) make decision never research or think when there is existing medical reasons to be concerned 3) sales person to make a sale, might/might not lie but i do not want my wife to put herself to test if the products are ok. Called the Credit Card company last night cannot cancel/reverse/block. the most they can do is to "note" in their system. Will call the facial company to not process the trade, refund/reverse, although i think they won't but i will kpkb until they do it. Objective: a) get the reversal of CC charges b) bring the list of chemicals to my doctor to verify and if doc say ok, we will go back to the facial company, since wife think the facial is super good and very impt to do, don't do will die. Note: due to the medical condition, even the free trial was not administered, but instead sales person immediately move on to sell plan. Advice: what else do i need to do? Very (Dulan + concerned) worried man
  6. A case of alergy? From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg..._after_she.html Posted on 27 Jan 2012 Her face broke out in pus-filled bumps after she used facial mask STOMPer Kerol used a face mask after reading several good reviews about it. The STOMPer was shocked when she later broke out in pus-filled bumps that covered both her cheeks. The STOMPer wrote: "I think this is really important to share with all women out there, who purchase facial products by believing what the packaging states. "Recently, while reading Cleo magazine, I saw this brand B.liv which claims that it tightens pores, anti inflammation. "They even have a few girls stating reviews like they have really sensitive skin but this mask was really mild to their skin. "Furthermore, I went to their website to check out their review and it sounds really convincing. Thus I bought one of their hydrating masks called leach me. "Yesterday morning my skin was feeling dry, so according to the instructions, I applied the mask for 30 minutes. "At first I did feel a pleasant result as it did tighten my pores which it claims on the website. Then later, I started having a few small breakouts around my nose and chin area, soon my whole face was inflamed and many tiny bumps with pus covered my entire cheeks. "This really caused a lot of frustration for me. The inflammation occurred when they stated that it was anti-inflammatory. "I was thinking that ok maybe I was the only unlucky one who happened to be sensitive to a certain ingredient in it. "Until my friend told me her boss who tried B.liv Immerse Me mask had the same problem that I am facing. I got so mad and sent an email to them and also posted a review on their website to warn other girls. "The I discovered why they had only good feedback on the website; the bad ones will not be approved by them to be posted up."

  10. SINGAPORE: Police have released more details on escaped Jemaah Islamiyah leader Mas Selamat Kastari's facial features. They said he has a mole on the right side of his cheek, below the eye, and has thin lips. Since his escape, police have also highlighted to the public that he has a limp on his left leg, visible only when he runs or walks fast. Described as a cautious and patient man, police believe Mas Selamat is still in Singapore. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng said: "The search will continue for Mas Selamat. That's why the whole Home team is out in full force, in cooperation with the Singapore Armed Forces which has been very helpful in the hunt for Mas Selamat." Assistant Commissioner Wong Hong Kuan, Operations Director of Singapore Police Force, said: "Based on our intelligence analysis of the person, it further strengthens our belief that he's still in Singapore. "He's likely to be extremely cautious and the first thing he'd try to do when he escapes and has no means of getting out of the country quickly is to try and hide and wait for our guard to falter before he tries to make good his escape." Over 3,000 officers of the Home team have been deployed in the search for Mas Selamat. Some of these officers searched the MacRitchie Reservoir on Sunday. Police said they have received over 1,400 hotline calls on his whereabouts. Posted: 16 March 2008 1626 hrs
