  1. https://www.sgcarmart.com/news/events_features.php?AID=4149 Firstly, I came across this article when I was trying to search on family cars so congrats to Julian Kho, Editor of SGCM for the third kid on the way! And congratulations for selling your car off at a favourable market situation for used car owners. Such a bittersweet feeling to have to part with one's car in the name of family and kids but this is really the inevitable. I'll never be able to understand what it means to sacrifice one's happiness for others because it's always been about me, myself and I. How can one go from sports car to family hauler MPVs? But that's exactly why you see Honda Streams and Odysseys with aggressive exterior styling, loud exhausts and erm... baby seats 🥶 Now back to my thread. And it so happened that a friend has been asking me for family car recommendations because I work at sgCarMart. I don't! A selfish younger me would say, just buy according to the number of seats you need or stop procreating. But the older me started surfing around sgCarMart for potential choices around the 170K budget for 5 + ad-hoc 2 pax lol. Other than the obvious MPV route, could one go for a wagon when planning for the family? I want to say the Skoda Octavia Combi looks really good but versus the traditional MPVs, you lose out on seating capacity and comfort. The next on my mind? The CX-8. Spacious, luxurious, seats either 6 or 7 pax in comfort. And then I continued searching and got carried away and came across so many other options especially from the Parallel Importers but they all kinda look the same. And of course we need to have articles like this one here telling us exactly what we need want to hear, that MPVs are not boring. I think the Volkswagen Group of cars have some interesting offerings that you don't come across aplenty in other car brands like the integrated child seats or booster seats in the SEATs and the Volkswagens; perhaps Volvos and Citroens. I've also wondered what are the folding tables for? Do parents let kids eat in your car? 🥶 So parents, what are your concerns when shopping for a family car other than what your wallet can afford? Do you actively look out for the driving assistance, or luxury features like built-in baby seats or even lots of cubby holes to store diapers? 😅
  2. TL:DR – A Mercedes GLA brake checks a cam car driver for high beaming him. Cam car driver’s wife then explodes into a 3-minute lecture and telling off while the tunes of Baby Shark drone on repeat in the background. Poor cam car driver cannot catch a break. We’ve all had bad days in our lives. But what this cam car driver just went through, is a winner. Watch this 6min+ video to find out what I mean. The important bits are from the start to about the 3min 20second mark So let’s list down how the cam car driver’s day gets from bad to worst The domino effect starts with the GLA Rear footage from the cam car shows us a black GLA behind cam car that filters to lane 2 on the KPE, accelerates to overtake cam car and abruptly cuts into cam car’s path. This causes the cam car driver to high beam the GLA. Resulting in a short brake check game. The lecture begins For those who don’t understand Mandarin, I’ve summarized the main points for you. The wife’s point of view The husband deserved it Their kid was in the car Singaporeans don’t like to get high beamed Her husband high-beamed intentionally Her husband was driving too slowly (LOL) The GLA gave ample space before cutting into cam car’s lane The husband’s point of view This is a safety issue The GLA did not signal Their kid was in the car. Not signaling and changing lane is dangerous When we list them out like that, the wife starts to make a very compelling argument. Anyone else feel like this exchange between husband and wife is very relatable to couples out there? Baby Shark Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo This song on repeat is torture. It all ends well, don't worry Kudos to the couple though. You could tell they were angry with one another for awhile but they played it cool and kept their tempers in check. #couplegoals Online Chatter Looking at all these comments, the wife was right! 3. Happy Labour Day, Singapore! Some of us are thinking of how to utilise our pay that just came in. Then, there are jokers like this Toyota Wish driver who blows it all in an instant (and more). Speeding on PIE A dashcam video of the said driver has gone viral and here are some takeaways after watching the video. No one drives a Wish to speed. It's a family MPV for goodness sake. Don't do stupid things with other people's car, much less a rental Here's the 47-second video taken from SG Road Vigilante The Wish loses control at the 0.09 mark of the video. Online chatter Wow. To the Toyota Wish driver, good luck paying for all the damages for a rental car.
  4. The Toyota Camry has always had an 'uncle's car' stigma to it, but the new one now is dressed with radically sportier and sharper looks, so is it necessarily deserving of the association? We put one to the test! Toyota and Lexus alike have a perchance for large grilles, and it seems the Camry has no qualms about sporting the same! So no prizes for guessing what captures Jon's attention here As you would expect, the Camry is really well appointed inside, But Julian finds something he really likes about the dash! And is it comfortable to drive? I think this picture tells alot... Or maybe the sgCarMart crew is a lot busier than they look? So is the new Camry still deserving of its 'Uncle's car' image? Or has the sporty image come with upgrades to the rest of the car befitting of a younger audience? You have to watch the full video to find out!
  5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfBHW9GuZVcHere's why an economical family car makes the most sense as a daily driver in Singapore. But with the wealth of choices in our new car market, making a decision on what to buy can be a little challenging. However, for most drivers in Singapore, we suggest that an economical family car makes the most sense. Here are six reasons why. 1. The running cost is significantly lower Economical family cars tend to have smaller capacity engines, which not only equate to lower road taxes and typically lower insurance premiums, but also better fuel economy (think an easy 12 to 15km/L) in the long run. For example, a popular engine option for economical family cars used to be 1.6-litre naturally aspirated, with an annual road tax of $742. But did you know there are also 1.4-litre options these days, which mean an even lower $608 annual road tax? And not to worry, despite being 1.4-litres, modern combustion engines offer enough power for day to day driving. 2. There's lower annual depreciation Thanks to their positioning as economical family cars, these ideal daily runabouts have lower depreciation figures compared to higher-end models, which makes them much more affordable and sensible. With the right choice, such as a Hyundai Accent, you can get a brand new car that depreciates at only $6,700 a year, with monthly instalments of $707, depending on how well you negotiate the transaction price and how much you down pay. That's equivalent to the cost of financing a car with renewed COE, but new! 3. The cost of maintenance and repairs are lower As economical family cars are affordable, ownership is pretty common. Thus, this creates a strong demand for replacement parts, which means these parts are easy to procure, and usually inexpensive to purchase. At the same time, it also means many workshops will likely be able to service the car, giving the owner more options, should he or she choose to seek help elsewhere when the warranty ends, as compared to higher-end cars. More importantly, with economical family cars, there are fewer customised parts and less complicated electronics, which mean the car is simpler and more straightforward to fix, with a much a lower probability for things to go wrong. 4. They're less stressful to drive Naturally, an owner of an economical family car will be less paranoid about the car getting dinged, dented or scratched, as compared to an owner who has paid a lot for his or her car's special paint option. It's a rule of thumb that applies to everything else in life. There will also be less worry about kerbing your expensive wheels, constant fussing over bird droppings, and less pressure to go out of your way to keep the car looking brand spanking new. But that's not to say owners of economical family cars simply don't care about them; there's just less stress with the ownership experience. You won't have to climb to the top of multi-story carparks just to find a secluded lot that's away from people who haphazardly open their doors. 5. The money saved can be used for other purposes It's no secret that cars are financial liabilities, made worse by the fact that they only have a 10-year lifespan here in Singapore. Hence, the money saved from the lower costs associated with economical family cars can be used for many other things that matter more in life, such as travelling and seeing the world, or your kids' college funds. The lower financial commitment also implies that there is less likely a need for you to sell your car, should you encounter a rough financial patch. 6. They just make more sense Ultimately, economical family cars just make more sense. In Singapore, most journeys are relatively short and quick. And for most drivers who need to just get from one point to another, the best car is one that gets the job done, no fuss, no muss. For anyone who is considering purchasing a new car, always remember that a car should serve you, not the other way around, and that it should above all be a need, not a want. Agree with the abovementioned points? Then an economical family car you should consider is the Hyundai Accent. It's not only a wise decision for which your finances will thank you for, but for something that is listed at just $75,999*, it comes with a wealth of features including an engine start-stop button, a reverse camera, USB connectivity, steering-mounted controls, leather seats, plenty of passenger space and a generous 465 litres of boot space.
  6. Hi friends! Since the COE dropped i guess it's time to replace my family car! i have 2 kids and 1 helper - all quite big sized, hence not looking for cars like Attrage.. Wanted the Impreza 1.6 but Subaru stopped bringing this in to SG :( My budget is around 75-90k and these are my research results: Sylphy - nice looking, good interior, but seems like a lot of problems ie gearbox issues and bad fc (from what i read here).. or can anyone say otherwise? Altis - the base model is 95k which is very ex..., but reliable and spacious Sienta - seriously considering this. K3 - Spacious, cheaper than the rest, but bad fc and this is a very old model.. Eltantra - not many comments about this car, seems spacious too. Any opinions from the experts here?
