With 197bhp, 300Nm of torque and a top speed of 234km/h, a high performance version of the new 1.6-litre SIDI turbo engine will globally premiere in a Vauxhall Cascada at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. The engine is one of the newly-designed Vauxhall four-cylinder SIDI (Spark Ignition Direct Injection) units and will join the existing 167bhp 1.6-litre SIDI turbo, available from its launch. The new power unit delivers 11 percent more power, including 300Nm maximum torque with overboost - 70Nm more than the comparable 1.6-litre turbo predecessor. At the heart of the SIDI turbo is a new engine block that can withstand a maximum combustion pressure of up to 130 bar in the cylinder. The block is made of grey cast iron with an aluminium baseplate. A different type of piston was also developed on top of a reduced compression ratio.   2. The original 911 was revealed to press and public at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show as the 901. 50 years have since passed. To commemorate its golden anniversary, Porsche has created a limited edition 911 Carrera S and only 1,963 units will be built. Set for a world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the '911 50' will be available in two unique colors - the darker Graphite Grey and a lighter Geyser Grey metallic. The limited edition coupe is 44mm broader across the rear wheel arches, a feature typically reserved for AWD Carrera 4 models. Other exterior updates include a '911 50' badge on the rear lid, chromed window frames, SportDesign side mirrors and new 20-inch alloy wheels. On the inside, '911 50' logos can be found on the rev counter, headrests and door sill plates. There are styling touches reminiscent of the original 911 such as green labelling on the instruments with white pointer needles and silver caps on the instrument pivot pins. The fabric pattern on the center section of the leather sports seats seemed like a blast from the 1960s 'Pepita' tartan design. Powered by a 400bhp 3.8-litre flat-six engine, the '911 50' edition with PDK transmission sprints from 0 to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds before reaching a top speed of 298km/h. The coupe is equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) to compensate for the wider rear body and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with rear limited slip differential.
  3. The current M3 is long overdue. The fifth generation M3 is on its way and will be revealed during the Geneva Motor Show next year and is rumoured to be powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder. Code-named F80, the M3's appearance in Geneva will be a lightly veiled concept where a clear styling and mechanical package of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG rival can be seen. A production ready model with a production interior will debut at next year's Frankfurt motor show, sources close to the matter have revealed. The current version of the M3 sedan went out of production in October 2011. The new M3 will be launched exclusively as a sedan, as a follow-up to the coupe, cabriolet and maybe a Gran Coupe variant to fall under the M4 nomenclature. The M3 sedan will have subtle styling changes that is also functional like a deeper front bumper with large cooling ducts for the forced-induction engine, a lightly tweaked kidney grille, etc. A trunk-lip spoiler can be spotted from the spy shots that complements the deep rear bumper that incorporates a diffuser and traditional quad exhausts. The M3 will retain a steel structure, though certain parts of the body shell, like the hood and doors, to be constructed from aluminum. To match the performance levels from rivals Mercedes and Audi, BMW's powertrain is expected to deliver about 450bhp.   4. These are the very first images of the next generation Hyundai i30. Set to make its official European debut at the at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, the all new i30 hatchback features fresh new looks and power plants that hopes to rival the iconic Volkswagen Golf and Renault Megane in Europe. The exterior styling follows the Fluidic Sculpture design language of the larger Elantra and I45. It features a large hexagonal front grille, wrap-around headlamps, a bulging belt line and pronounced front wheel arches.   5. Hankook Tire has broken new ground at the Frankfurt Motor Show by unveiling a prototype tyre that features aerodynamic winglets on its sidewalls. The Ventus Aero features six winglets on each sidewall which create downforce and act directly on the vehicle's axles, maximising tyre grip at higher speeds. The concept tyre also features a so-called "dimple structure" above three of the winglets on the tyre sidewalls' upper section. The dimples create a micro-vortex as the tyre rotates and assist in reducing aerodynamic drag created by the winglets below them. Hankook has applied for a patent on the technology developed for the new tyre - which is the result of the company's strong focus on innovation. "The impetus for the development of Ventus Aero has been to scoop out the largely unused aerodynamic possibilities when it comes to tyre design," said Hankook's chief marketing officer, Hyun Shick Cho. "Future transportation concepts will require innovative and smart solutions, especially from the tyre industry," said Mr Cho. "Hankook Tire will be expanding investment in future innovation as well as top-level motorsport like the DTM, where advanced technologies are applied to developing new high performance tyres." Hankook says its aerodynamic sidewall technology will be applied to its racing tyres, and is likely to be incorporated into a new generation of ultra-high performance road tyres for especially fast and powerful super sports cars. The company also used the Frankfurt show to debut its next generation of race tyres for the German-based DTM touring car series, which moves to new regulations next year. The tyres are wider and larger in diameter and incorporate lessons about construction and compound learnt by Hankook during this year's inaugural season of tyre supply to the DTM.

  7. Now we all know that Sebastian Vettel is currently winning lots of races with Red Bull in F1and this has somehow caused a Red Bull-Infiniti cars tie up. While having an actual car manufacturer (Nissan via Infiniti) as a marketing partner is all fine I find it amusing that the first car to use the reigning World Champion's name is an SUV. The Sebastian Vettel inspired Infiniti is the Sebastian Vettel Infiniti FX50 Concept that will be previewed at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show shortly. The Sebastian Vettel Infiniti FX50 Concept is an SUV. It was based on the FX Limited Edition of 2010 and has a different grille, a different carbon fiber spoiler (supposedly based on the F1 car), a rear wing instead of roof rails and other carbon fiber bits here and there. Chances are that this concept car will be produced as a marketing tool for Infiniti and to some extent Red Bull/Vettel. Of course Sebastian Vettel is actually Infiniti's global ambassador and drives a normal FX50 on the road because of this. But an SUV as a first car? Can't he get the Infiniti luxury coupe instead as the first car with his name on it? The SUV compared to his Formula 1 car is as different as night and day or heaven and hell. It may look aggressive, but the bottomline is that the SUV is tall and huge. He should get a coupe instead. Remember Michael Schumacher? When he was with Ferrari his name was plastered on small, nippy Fiats that could actually handle and drive well
  8. Saab is so broke that its owners recently had to sell some of its shares in order to pay the salaries of its white collar (executive level) earlier this month. This is the latest in the chapter of the Saab Book of Pain and Suffering. This came right after the new where Saab's component suppliers stopped supplying the necessary components in order for them to produce cars. Their production line is still silent at the moment with no confirmation as to when it will restart (if ever), again. Now, having seen the light, or darkness arising from an acute lack of money the management of Saab has decided that the company would skip the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. A very wise choice considering that it basically takes a ton of money to set up a display booth at any exhibition event. From personal experience, it will cost at least a good US$50,000 for a decent sized booth at an international event at some exhibition hall. And if you're a major player or one that needs to make some impact, it will cost more. And Saab needs to make some positive impact if it wants to survive this next few months. Not attendintg Frankfurt is actually a small part of the big picture. The big picture is actually pretty bleak for Saab at the moment and I cannot seem to see a happy ending any time soon. Saab is on life support and is slowly deteriorating. The steroid shot it requires would need to be of epic proportions and again the question comes up whether Saab should be worth saving or not. The only interesting car they currently produce is the new Saab 9-5. It may look unique but these days only looking unique doesn't sell. There has to be some magic involved. Saab should go back to its quirky ways and start building cars in a way no one could think of. Those days Saab thought differently from others. Door handles were overbuilt so that you can tie ropes on them and they'd be strong enough to be used to pull the whole car out of a ditch if you skid off the road while driving on snow. They also had the ignition key on the center console so that you start the car and then reach for the handbrake instantly. Now, Saabs are normal cars. Most people who wanted normal cars (at a slightly higher price) would end up buying some German car instead. At the very least they'd buy some French car which also has somewhatquirky styling. Citroen especially. So what has Saab got to offer then? Nothing actually. That is unless they start building a retro looking Saab 93/96 from the 1950s/ 1970s for the 2010s. Saab needs to take one old quirky car, redo it for the present, market it as a slightly upmarket little hatchback, milk the retro aspect like crazy and pray to the Norse Gods that the car buying public buys it. This is actually part of Saab's gameplan and I actually want to see a modernized Saab 93 as when I was younger I managed to catch a few of these in the metal. I hope Saab can survive so that they can do just that in the first place.
