  3. After impossible burger, impossible meat, eggless egg and such, now come coffee bean-less coffee. Is this necessary in the name of food security and sustainability? Let me own up: I dislike all these lab created food products although I had never tried any of them till date. What is your take? Source: https://cnalifestyle.channelnewsasia.com/dining/prefer-bean-free-coffee-alternative-381681 Founders Jake Berber, a former neuroscientist, and Tan Ding Jie, a food scientist, said they embarked on the project because coffee farmland is diminishing and climate change threatens to erase 50 per cent of coffee by 2050. According to them, coffee also has a big carbon footprint as 1kg of coffee requires as much as 29kg of carbon dioxide. Berber and Tan believe they are the first in Asia to have launched bean-free coffee. While other bean-free coffee producers in the world use ingredients like chickpeas, rice hulls and seeds to make their product, Prefer’s founders wanted to upcycle food waste products found locally, in line with the whole point of bean-free coffee, which is sustainability, Tan told us. To that end, they use soya pulp discard from local soya milk chain Mr Bean, day-old bread from Gardenia bakery and spent grains that are a byproduct of beer-making from local breweries. These are fermented, then roasted, and finally ground up. Consumers and partnering cafes receive the product in a form that looks like ground coffee and can be extracted using the usual methods. The point was for baristas to have to deviate as little as possible from their procedure, Tan said. So, what’s the verdict? Well, it works quite nicely when mixed into a medium, like in the Prefer Iced Yuzu Espresso Soda served at Dough cafe. And when it’s served as an oat milk latte, for example, it lends a depth of malted flavour bordering on umami. A hoppy, even slightly savoury taste is discernible to varying degrees, depending on what it’s blended with. But if I were you, I wouldn’t try it as an espresso shot. It’s not ready to be drunk black yet, Tan opined. Does it look like coffee? Yes. Does it smell like coffee? Not far off. Does it taste exactly like coffee as we know it? Not so much. But does it give you the feeling of nursing a cuppa at a cafe while revelling in the smug satisfaction that you’re helping to save the whales? Absolutely.

  6. Harder to get green rebates when tighter vehicle emission standards kick in PUBLISHED JAN 25, 2022, 4:39 PM SGT SINGAPORE - It will be significantly tougher for cars to qualify for rebates when a new emission-based tax scheme kicks in as early as next year. All other things being equal, the scheme is also likely to mean higher prices or fewer options for buyers if importers fail to source cleaner models. The Vehicle Emissions Scheme (VES), which doles out tax rebates and surcharges based on a car's emissions, turns five at the end of this year. The National Environment Agency (NEA) has proposed a revised scheme to motor traders, with lower thresholds for the five pollutants measured. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/harder-to-get-green-rebates-when-tighter-vehicle-emission-standards-kick-in
  7. TRANSPORT operator SMRT will bring in its first batch of 300 electric vehicles from July this year, as it aims to replace its entire taxi fleet with electric vehicles within the next five years. The fleet of electric vehicles to be launched could include various models well suited to meet the demands of the transport market. These could include sedans, station wagons and multi-purpose vehicles, SMRT said in a press statement on Tuesday. Going electric with taxis is part of SMRT's growth strategy in green businesses under Strides Mobility, its sustainable urban mobility services arm. This strategy includes developing sustainable mobility solutions and introducing mobility services using electric vehicles, including taxis, cars, vans, limousines, motorcycles and buses. Said Tan Kian Heong, president of SMRT Road Holdings: "In line with Singapore's Green Plan, we are excited to be among the first point-to-point transport operators to commit to the deployment of electric taxis on a large scale. This is a key part of our plan to incorporate principles of sustainability into each of our businesses to bring sustainable urban mobility services to our customers." https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/transport/smrt-to-progressively-replace-taxi-fleet-with-electric-vehicles-within-five-years
  8. I am wondering how irritated are you by motor air pollution? I jog everyday and I LOVE the fact that the mini bus in my estate has turned electric. Previously, it will always spew smoke on to me.... When driving on the road, I notice that there are smoky lorries who emit like a smoke screen to hide themselves. I always wonder how did these vehicles even drive in Singapore. https://www.nea.gov.sg/our-services/pollution-control/air-pollution/air-pollution-regulations It is supposed to be illegal to drive them and yet I see them sometimes. I also realised there is an app, myEnv, to report such vehicles and I am going to try to report them to see if it helps. Just hoping to increase the awareness of this app so hopefully we can get a greener Singapore earlier than later. I am just wondering how fresh the air will be when there is no emissions from motor vehicles... Will it be like in the mountains fresh?
  9. A Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe has been caught doing 'Boom Boom Boom' noises in one of the HDB carparks along Hougang Street 61 early in the morning last night. This has not gone well for him as videos of him revving his car that has been tuned to make "pop and crackle" noises has gone viral. s.MP4 According to unnamed sources, it seemed that the green CLA Coupe owner has been approached by home owners staying nearby for the noise pollution and a fight ensued. The police was called in and the CLA owner looked like he has been charged for causing hurt a.k.a Penal Code 323 as we can see from the Whatsapp screenshots. He was intoxicated too but was not charged for drink-driving as his female friend was at the wheel.
  10. Maybe they were in a rush or had some emergency to attend to? But no matter what it is, there is still almost no excuse to cross the road when the lights tell you not to. 2 young teens were knocked down by a taxi along Paya Lebar road on 1st of Oct 2020 as they crossed the road while the light wasn't in their favour. The 17 year-old female pedestrian was conscious when taken to Raffles Hospital while the male refused to be taken to hospital according to The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). He seemed to suffer from some bleeding from his knee but was still able to move around on his own. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, said the police. Check out the various angles of the accident video on SG Road Vigilante.
  11. The truth? The lies? Are we blindly jumping on the bandwagon and dropping off the cliff? Be careful who we are sleeping with. I think its a good time to watch this long video and make our own judgement. We can wake up or we can say its all bulls**t.

  16. http://green.autoblog.com/2011/10/21/malay...mport-excise-d/ Make them exempt from import and excise duties and "robust growth" will follow. That's Malaysia's hybrid and plug-in vehicle scheme. From now through December of 2013, all hybrid and plug-in vehicles sold in Malaysia will be completely exempt from import and export duties. Malaysia's finance minister, Najib Razak, says that the duty exemption is to "promote green technology and ensure sustainable development" by encouraging domestic assembly of electric vehicles and hybrids. Kavan Mukhtyar, Frost & Sullivan's transportation head for the Asia-Pacific region, says the duty exemptions will indeed encourage automakers to launch hybrids in Malaysia: This will drive robust growth in the hybrid market over the next few years. We expect hybrid volumes to exceed 10,000 units [annually] by 2013. 10,000. That's not much, is it? Well, since Toyota sold only 162 Prius hybrids in Malaysia through the first eight months of 2011, moving up to 10,000 hybrids sold there per year would be quite an achievement.
  17. Singapore is working towards becoming a bike-friendly city. If you happen to pass by places such as Punggol Park or East Coast Park, you will see many cyclists, even some with their own group jerseys. Joining a cycling group is also a way to widen your circle of friends and to share the passion of cycling with others. Cycling is an environmentally friendly mode of transport that is increasingly popular in Singapore, especially for short trips - as part of the daily commute to work, to the MRT station or bus interchange, or for intra-town travel. Besides being economical and convenient, cycling also offers many health benefits, bringing riders closer to nature and the outdoors. While there are many low cost bicycles available in Singapore, Louis Garneau bicycles offer more value and quality. 18. Pupils of a primary school in Sengkang chain their bicycles to railings as they are not allowed to park them in the school. Such attitudes need to change so people are encouraged to use bicycles for transport. More than 500 cities in the world have bicycle-sharing schemes. Singapore is not among them. Although the Government announced bold plans last month to build a staggering 700km of cycling paths by 2030 - the equivalent of cycling from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and back - that alone will not make Singapore a cycling city. We have fallen behind other cities that actively promote cycling as a mode of transport. There are various reasons why we should pedal hard to catch up. Cycling is a green option that can be an efficient people-mover for transport planners. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/singapore/story/singapore-still-lacks-the-ride-stuff-20131109
  19. "The government is consulting stakeholders on measures that can be taken to further enhance Singapore’s plan to reduce carbon emissions and promote green growth beyond 2020. As a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Singapore is actively involved in ongoing negotiations to work out a new global agreement on climate change by end 2015. One key strategy is energy efficiency, especially as Singapore has limited alternative energy sources." "Share Your Views We want to hear your views on any of the following areas for action. We also welcome your perspectives on the last document – pertaining to harnessing economic and green growth opportunities in clean energy, urban solutions, research and test bedding, among others:" - from https://www.nccs.gov.sg/consultation2015

  22. http://dai.ly/x14jt3d Porsche recently showcased its 918 Spyder at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It is all common for auto makers to showcase their latest products at one of the globe's biggest and most awaited car shows, much less for a halo car. But the people from Stuttgart did more than that. While a team was preparing the final production version of the 918 for its world premiere at Frankfurt, another brought it out for a spin at the Nurburgring. The result was a record-breaking 6:57. That puts the Porsche right behind the barely legal Radical SR8, overtaking the Dodge Viper ACR (7:12), which held the fastest street going production car record for two years. Now jump to the video to catch a glimpse of the 918 in action.
