Over 60 MyCarForum (MCF) members gathered at CoSpace Park, at Science Park Road to attend the latest MCF Hangout with Jetabout Holidays. The event proved to be a learning opportunity to MCF members who want to head for self-drive holidays and tours in Tasmania. Jetabout Holidays is an established travel agency that provides various well-priced and all inclusive tour packages that include self-drives and group tours in and around Tasmania. For self-drive packages, it includes vehicle rental, too. Tasmania is known for its beautiful landscapes. Despite being Australia’s smallest state, it is geographically diverse with over 40% of land area reserved for national parks and wilderness areas. MCF members who attended the event also received goodie bags from Jetabout Holidays, and one lucky draw winner walked away with a $200 travel voucher. sgCarMart Deputy Editor, Nigel Yong, was on hand to share his thoughts on driving overseas. As shared by Nigel, a Singapore driving licence is recognised in Australia. For other types of driving licences, as long as the driving licence is in English and you have over a year of driving experience, it will be recognised. According to Nigel, driving in Australia is very similar to Singapore, and drivers are courteous. But he did mention that speed limits, as well as the usage of seat belts for drivers and passengers are regularly enforced. During the event, Jansen Chua, Associate Instructor at the Canon Imaging Academy, also shared some tips on how to capture great photos. During the last Tasmania self-drive trip, holiday makers managed to capture a glimpse of the Southern Lights. Fiona Lee from Tourism Tasmania was also on hand to share more on what one can expect from Tasmania's vast geographical diversity. The event ended off with a food tasting experience. MCF members had a chance to taste food and drinks that is unique to the region, like Tasmanian Leatherwood Honey.

SINGAPORE — There will be at least seven long weekends next year, according to a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) release on Tuesday (April 5) that shows a number of public holidays falling either on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday . The seven long weekends for 2017 are high by usual standards, though still one short of the record eight seen in 2009. There are six long weekends this year (2016), compared to seven in 2015 and four in 2014. New Year’s Day in 2017 will fall on a Sunday meaning that the following Monday will be a designated public holiday. Meanwhile, Chinese New Year will be on Jan 28 and Jan 29 (a Saturday and Sunday). Other public holidays that will result in long weekends include Good Friday (April 14), Labour Day (May 1, Monday), Hari Raya Puasa (June 25, Sunday), Hari Raya Haji (Sept 1, Friday), and Christmas (Dec 25, Monday). Under the Employment Act, if a public holiday falls on a Saturday, an employee who is not required to work on a Saturday is entitled to another day off or an extra day’s salary in lieu of that public holiday, said the MOM. In its statement, the ministry added that employees are entitled to an extra day’s salary at the basic rate of pay if he/she is required to work on a public holiday. Alternatively, the employer and employee may mutually agree to substitute a public holiday for another working day. An employer also has the additional option of granting managers or executives, earning up to a basic monthly salary of $4,500, time-off-in-lieu for working on a public holiday. Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) rates will be reduced by $1 or 50 cents during certain time periods at 12 gantries for the June school holidays. The revised rates will apply from June 1 to June 29. The ERP rates will revert to pre-school holiday charges from July 1, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a news release on Monday. The 12 gantries include one on the southbound Central Expressway before Braddell Road, and two along Dunearn Road. Rates for other gantries remain unchanged. The LTA monitors traffic speeds on all roads and found that traffic flow at these 12 gantries during the last June holidays was smooth enough to warrant a reduction of ERP rates this year. In addition, vehicle entry permit operating hours will end earlier at noon on weekdays for June 1 to June 30. Drivers of foreign-registered cars and motorcycles do not have to pay permit fees for the day if they drive into Singapore after 12pm and leave by 2am the following day on weekdays during this period. The LTA said this is part of an ongoing initiative to attract foreign visitors to Singapore, especially during the local school holiday period. For normal weekdays outside of Singapore's June and December school holidays, vehicle entry permit fees are charged from 2am to 5pm daily except on weekends and public holidays. Hi guys, Just wondering if anyone booked their air tickets through http://www.facebook.com/Holidays.SG before? They don't seem to have a website, bookings are done through their Facebook site which leads to a pop-up. Are they reliable? Not much info about them online. No complains on their FB page as well, but we know how some business owners delete negative comments from social networking sites.

Historical Kuala Selangor - Another great 'drive-to' destination

It's about that time of the year again. The end of the year where it just seems natural for most of us to take a break from the normal routine, finish off one's annual leave and go on a holiday. Since this is a motoring blog, a drive to holiday destination is what I will be featuring (as usual and as always). Those that have been following MyAutoBlog would notice that I have been writing about road trips in and around Peninsular Malaysia and what you can do when you get to that Malaysian destination. This latest 'drive-to destination' takes us to Kuala Selangor, Malaysia. Kuala Selangor is a quaint old town situated on the West Coast of Malaysia in the state of Selangor. This sleepy hollow is basically an hour's drive from Kuala Lumpur or a good five hours or so from the Causeway(s). You could use the ELITE (Nilai-KLIA-Shah Alam) Highway and head towards Klang before heading north towards Kuala Selangor but I would suggest getting to Kuala Selangor using the Guthrie highway, which you can basically reach from the Federal Highway's first exit after the Federal Highway's Shah Alam toll booth. Upon entering the Guthrie Highway head towards Ijok. At the Ijok interchange/exit, head on towards Ijok and onwards to Kuala Selangor. The reason for this not so straight forward route is that the scenery is much better instead of passing lots of workshops, factory lots and used car lots along Kapar/Meru Road. Furthermore, the road is slightly more challenging instead of just a straight line. Once you reach Kuala Selangor you'll note that this little town is indeed a sleepy hollow. Kuala Selangor was once the capital of the State of Selangor and it is fillied with history. I have to say that it is one of the better preserved historical spots in Peninsular Malaysia, up there with Malacca and even Penang. Bukit Melawati, or Melawati Hill holds a heck of a lot of history and a fabulous view to boot. This I believe is a very good reason to spend a couple of days at this sleepy little hamlet. Private cars aren't allowed up the hill. You can either walk up (which won't kill you as it is only a few hundred meters up via a tarred road) or take the passenger tram (which is actually a tractor badly disguised as a train) for a small fee. At the peak, there is a lighthouse, remnants of a fort with the actual cannons, a royal mausoleum (where a supposedly sacred and mystical cannon covered in yellow cloth stands guard), a chopping block which was actually used to chop people's heads off and a museum covering the history of Kuala Selangor. You could actually spend a whole day exploring the hill if you took your time. Now the town itself is pretty cool too. There are pre-war buildings that would capture your sight, a clock tower commemorating Malaysia's independence and other odd bits here and there -
