  21. By Ng Baoying, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 17 February 2009 1322 hrs SINGAPORE: Singapore's January non-oil domestic exports suffered their largest year-on-year fall since records began in 1977, tumbling a worse-than-expected 35 per cent. January was also the ninth consecutive month of shrinking exports here. This came on the back of falling demand from all of Singapore's top 10 markets amid a global economic slowdown. Compared to the previous year, exports to China fell by 52 per cent in January, while those to the US decreased by 50 per cent. Electronic products led the overall decline, dropping by 38 per cent on-year after shrinking by 25 per cent in December. Non-electronic product exports fell by 32 per cent. Compared to December, non-oil domestic exports shrank 21 per cent. On a month-on-month, seasonally adjusted basis, exports fell by 3.2 per cent in January, compared to December's 11 per cent slide. Analysts noted that the decline was worse than that of September 2001, following the terrorist attacks in the US, when exports dropped 30.7 per cent. Across the region, Asian exports have been on the decline as the global economic downturn depressed demand for goods. Other badly hit countries included Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. - CNA/yb
  22. Read today New Paper and reported that a vehicle owner who Subaru Legacy was involved in a traffic accident in MY and completely burnt. Insurance had write off as beyong repair. The accident happen in January 2008. What shocking the owner is that when he surf the net in March 2008, he saw a car of same make, model and colour being advertised for sale by a dealer on sgCarMark website. A bigger jolt came when he saw it has the same licence plate number of his burnt car...... A police report was lodged and the car had been seized from the dealer at Turf City by LTA for investigation. Further investigation reveal that the said vehicle have the same chassis and engine number. All this suggest that the shiny car in the showroom had been taken on the identity of the previous owner wrecked car. This is known within the car industry as "ringing" ... So if your car is totally wrecked and scraped off, it could be risen again as a brand new second hand car.
  23. I am starting this on behalf of brothers like Ahyoo2002 who are interested to discuss how the COE results will unfold.. Please vote what you think will be the next Cat B result... thank you! COE Open Bidding Next COE Open Bidding Exercise Starts on 21/01/2008 12:00 hrs, Ends on 23/01/2008 16:00 hrs The COE Quota available for next Bidding Exercise A Car (1600cc & below) &Taxi 2,231 B Car (Above 1600 cc) 1,144 C Goods Vehicle & Bus 349 D Motorcycle 443 E Open 1,169 Factors why COE price will go up - Talks about reduction of COE quota in 2008: lower supply causes COE price to climb - Some people do last minute purchase of cars for Chinese New Year - Some industries getting fat bonuses due to good performance in 2007. These people will tend to buy or change cars. - Many people buying New Fit 2008 (cat A) - Road tax likely to decrease slightly in 2008 Factors why COE price will fall - govt announces plan to shift people towards public transport by making mrt and buses more accessible and higher frequency. - govt's plan to set up more ERP gantries islandwide, starting with 5 new ERP gantries (Toa Payoh among them). Also will likely extend timing and rates. - increase bus lanes and more penalties for cars using bus lanes inappropriately: more inconveniences and jams to car users. - Increasing petrol cost - Increasing insurance cost - Increasing summons amounts (for speeding) - Increasing frequency of pontianaks for parking fines. - Recession just confirmed in USA, likely to affect macroeconomics of Asia region in 2008. - Taxi drivers' business affected by brainless increase in taxi fare. Double whammy when govt just announced plans to move people to bus and mrt from taxi and cars. Taxi drivers will "eat grass" liao. Expect lesser taxi bidding for COE in future. - Many car dealers cannot promise car delivery before Chinese New Year if bidding for coming COE exercise. - Some anticipated cars like new Altis not available yet Disclaimer: above factors are not exhaustive and are listed for further discussions.

It is a pleasure to join you this morning at the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) Operations Control Centre for an update on KPE Phase 2. The KPE project team has worked very hard and made good progress. I am pleased to announce that the full KPE will be opened on 20 September 2008. With this new high speed access, northeast residents can expect travel time to the city to be cut by 25%. The KPE will also help relieve congestion on the Central Expressway (CTE). A key expressway supporting the development of the Marina Bay, the MCE is crucial for the long-term growth of Singapore. 3. Indeed, when it comes to investing for growth, we do not stand still.
