  1. Former RWS casino dealer stole chips worth at least S$77,000, bought branded goods Sources: https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/former-rws-casino-dealer-stole-chips-worth-least-s77000-bought-branded-goods SINGAPORE — A former dealer at the Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) casino took at least S$77,000 worth of S$1,000 cash chips, asked a friend to help him cash some of them out, and used the money to buy luxury goods for himself and his girlfriend. His spending spree included a Breitling watch worth almost S$6,000, a pair of Balenciaga shoes and a pouch, and S$400 Chanel earrings. He also bought an Apple iPad mini and an iPhone. On Thursday (June 20), Ding Zhipeng, a Chinese national, was sentenced to nine months and six weeks’ jail and fined S$12,000. The 28-year-old pleaded guilty in the State Courts to one charge of criminal breach of trust, one charge under the Casino Control Act and one charge under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act. Thirteen similar charges were taken into consideration for sentencing. The court heard that Ding had been employed at RWS since July 2017, and looked after casino cash chips kept in the float — that is, trays where the chips were kept — of his assigned gaming tables. He began stealing casino cash chips from the float sometime in May or June 2018, when there were no patrons at his gaming table. His offences were finally discovered on Nov 12, 2018, when a surveillance operator spotted Ding taking S$1,000 cash chips from the float. The operator then called the police. Officers seized 72 chips and S$3,000 in cash from Ding’s rental room when they searched it later that evening. He surrendered another two chips that he had kept inside his pants when he was arrested. Deputy Public Prosecutor Tay Jia En noted that Ding had misappropriated a large amount over an extended period of time. He showed premeditation by stealing the chips when his supervisor was not looking, the prosecutor added, and he used a friend to cash out the chips as he would attract suspicion by doing it himself. In mitigation, Ding’s lawyer John Koh told the court that his client was stressed and “resorted to improper channels to make extra money”, while working long hours to make money for his family back in China. Most of the money was eventually recovered as well, Mr Koh added.
  2. Explosions have hit three churches and three hotels in and around the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, police said Sunday. The blasts hit several high-end hotels and one church in the capital, while two additional churches were targeted outside Colombo, police said. There were initial reports of at least 80 people injured in the capital. "Eighty people have already been admitted, and more are still coming in," an official at the Colombo National Hospital told AFP on condition of anonymity. The nature of the explosions was not immediately clear. "A bomb attack to our church, please come and help if your family members are there," read a post in English on the Facebook page of the St Sebastian's Church at Katuwapitiya in Negombo. 4. TAIPEI: At least 17 people were dead and 126 others injured after a train derailed on Taiwan's east coast on Sunday afternoon (Oct 21), authorities said. The train, Puyuma Express 6432, was travelling from Taitung and derailed near Yilan county near the coast, on a railway popular among tourists. "As of 6.30pm there are 17 dead on site and 126 people injured," the Taiwan Railways Administration said in a statement, adding that the train had been moving between two stations in Yilan County before the derailment occurred. Taiwan's central government said that rescue services were at the scene and that the premier had been notified and was highly concerned over the safety of the travelers. 7. Hi guys, jus doing a poll to see which brand is least preferred. then hopefully with the poll results, ppl can converge and ignore the brand with least support. Hope to send out the message that: Since the cartel do not wish to differentiate themselves, we shall differentiate their revenue. Dun we wish for one company to undercut the market to support the consumers? Eg if they sell 4 cents cheaper then the rest, i dun mind giving them higher volume and lower margin. spend our petrol $ for a better cause.

The blast occurred on 23rd Street between the Avenue of the Americas and Seventh Avenue. By JONAVIDOR/TWITTER on Publish DateSeptember 17, 2016. Photo by Louis Lanzano for The New York Times. A powerful explosion rocked the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan on Saturday night, injuring 25 people, shattering windows and forcing the closure of several blocks, the authorities said. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening, the Fire Department said on Twitter. The explosion was reported around 8:30 p.m. at 133 West 23rd Street, near the Avenue of the Americas, the department said, adding that there was a report that it emanated from a Dumpster. The authorities were unsure of the cause of the explosion and were exploring various possibilities. Mayor Bill de Blasio said at an 11:15 p.m. news conference that the explosion appeared to have been “an intentional act” but that there was no evidence that terrorism had been involved, although the investigation was continuing. The blast shattered windows in a five-story brownstone building and sent debris into the street, a law enforcement official said. The building is between a church on its eastern side and an apartment building under renovation on its western side. As a precaution, the police and fire personnel were searching trash cans for possible explosive devices, officials said. At 11 p.m., the police said onTwitter that a “possible secondary device” had been found at 27th Street between Avenue of the Americas and Seventh Avenue.

  11. The entire country machiam a 9,826,675 sqkm shooting range. Really getting outa hand From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1255277/1/.html At least four dead in California shooting spree Posted: 20 February 2013 1311 hrs LOS ANGELES: A gunman killed three people in California on Tuesday, including at least one execution-style, in a series of shootings and carjackings before taking his own life, police said. At least two other people were injured as the gunman fired randomly on other vehicles on a freeway, before he shot and killed himself near the city of Orange, south of Los Angeles. The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Ali Syed, who was unemployed, had no criminal record, and was living at home with his parents and taking a class at a local college. In all there were three murders and five attempted murders. The motive for the attacks was being investigated, said Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino, in an afternoon update on the early morning shootings. He described Syed as "kind of a loner (who) doesn't have a lot of friends." The first killing was a woman found dead in the early hours in Syed's family home in Ladera Ranch. The woman was not known to his relatives, and police said they were working to identify her. Syed then fled in an SUV, and "multiple incidents" occurred as he drove to nearby Tustin, about 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles, said Tustin police department spokesman Paul Garaven. In one of the first carjackings, Syed appeared "very polite" as he walked up to a gas station customer. "I don't want to hurt you. I killed somebody and today's my last day. Give me your keys," he told the customer, according to Tustin police chief Scott Jordan. He then took the man's car and drove onto a nearby freeway, where he stopped and opened fire on passing vehicles, trying to get another car. In another carjacking, Syed got out of his vehicle and confronted a motorist in a BMW. "He orders him out of the vehicle, walks him to the side of the curb, and executes (the) victim," said Santa Ana Police Corporal Anthony Bertagna. Amormino said four people were confirmed dead including the gunman. "With each carjacking there was a shooting involved," he said. Amormino added that there was no active pursuit of the suspect's vehicle until it was located near Orange, where the gunman took his own life. "He stopped the vehicle and got out and shot himself," he said. - AFP/sf

  13. Is it not tantamount to having a minimum wage policy in this case? Frankly how much can $50 last for these low-wage workers? Enough to maybe ease their daily transport burden slightly or maybe add an additional veg portion for their lunch? BTW before these workers jump for joy, it is only a "recommendation" only & not compulsory on the part of their employers hor. Just glad that at least they acknowledge part of Pro Lim's earlier wage proposal which has some bearing on their recommendations. 14. Every time I see people driving nice cars, I wonder how much they earn to afford such nice machines? Let's say Mr Driver drives a $400k car, most likely he has more than one car, his other car may worth say another $180k. At the same time, being able to afford the cars, he is unlikely to live in a 2-room HDB flat, more likely at least a place worth say $1m to be very very conservative. Let's say he has only one property, though unlikely. For the purpose of simplifying the calculation, let's say he manages to arrange full loans for his cars and property, and stretches his loans to max repayment periods, he's likely to be paying about $13k monthly combined installment. (maybe some bros can check / correct this figure to make it as realistic as possible?) ..... Assuming car loans:- 6-yr, housing loan:- 20-yr Let's say he spend about $1k on rdtx, petrol, insur etc per month, another say $3k on daily expenses eg food, cloths, etc etc.... This is quite a tight budget for some singles. Total:- 13 + 1 + 3 = 17 k Assuming he saves 5% of his earning, he will needs to earn $17k x 1.05 = approx $18k per month Is this figure close to what some mcf bros are earning when they are/were single and owning cars + property as Mr Driver?

  16. Have to find a way to measure happiness.... Once that's settled, can we look back and say which things we spent money on are giving us the max HAPPINESS per $ spent? A good dinner of $200 per head made you happy for 1 hour of 8/10 of happiness? (10/10 means total happiness): this gives $200 divide by 8 = 25points.... A good tie for $100 but you wear it only say for 3 ocassions of 2 hours each and it gave you 8/10 happiness (total happiness = $100 divide by (2hrs x 3times x 8) = 100 divide by 48 = 2.08points... 2.08points means less dollars per happiness point compared with the $200 dinner........... win liao A flashy car costing $20k per year depreciation, add rdtx, insur, petrol etc, say $15k pa, giving us total cost 20 + 15 = $35k pa this is approx $3k per mth, $100 per day. Lets say we use the car 4hr a day, this gives us $25 per hr of use. If we derive 8/10 happiness from using the car, 25 divide by 8 = 3.13points.... cant beat good tie!! moral of the story: a good tie you like gives you max value for money in terms of HAPPINESS... (even if you only use it trice...)

One such 'irritating' thing:- Feel high tide, rush to toilet, unzip in front of urinal..... water fall starts, before halfway mark ...... ring, ring, ring, and hp in pocket vibrates.... look at the display:- OMG, boss calls from overseas..... but while holding hp to read the caller ID, di di swings to side and water fall goes the wrong way.... to answer the call, or let it ring but use the hand to 'steady' the di di?? so many times, when doing the water fall thingy, hp sure rings OR going from home to car outside, both hands carry bags, newspaper, water bottle, running shoes.... ie both hands are full.... then the hp starts to ring and i am not wearing the bluetooth ear piece.... you guys ever encountered before anything worse than the above???

  21. More Singaporeans own at least two cars More than 34,000 people with more than one car to their names By Cheryl Ong & Maria Almenoar http://www.straitstimes.com/STI/STIMEDIA/i...GES_MACAR24.jpg THIS may be the world's most expensive place to own a car, but it is not stopping more people from buying a second one or even a third. Land Transport Authority (LTA) figures show 6.8 per cent of car owners here have two or more cars, up from 5.5 per cent just four years ago. This translates into 34,226 people with more than one car to their names as of June. This has caused a crunch on the number of parking spaces available. It is not just the well-off who own more than one car. Parking spaces in the carparks in Housing Board estates are also getting hard to come by. Increasingly, residents have to park farther away from their flats or park illegally. When the HDB looked into complaints over this, it found 36,370 households owning more than one car - 60 per cent more than in 2006, when 22,700 did. Transport researcher Lee Der Horng of the National University of Singapore said the trend is a sign that people have come to see a car as a necessity, not a luxury. He said he had expected the demand for cars to fall, given the Government's drive to promote public transport and the expected hike in certificate of entitlement (COE) prices because of the limited supply of COEs available now. He said: 'If people believe in this lifestyle of having more cars, to satisfy that, they'll convince themselves that the price of a COE is an acceptable percentage of their disposable income.' He added that this suggested the Government's message to people to use public transport may not be getting through. COE premiums now stand at $30,000 to $40,000, higher than in recent years, when they dipped below $20,000; but they are still cheaper now than when they hit $100,000 back in the 1990s. Car dealers and owners cite a slew of reasons people have more than one car: Couples may each need their own car to get to work, or a non-working spouse may need one for errands. And then there are parents who register a second car in their names but let their children drive it, to save on insurance premiums for newer drivers. Sometimes, people buy another car because they can. Take for example a man who indulges himself with a second car, usually a sports car, said managing director Eddie Loo of used-car dealership Car Times. Another factor is the launch of cheaper China-made cars, which make for affordable second cars. The HDB said it will add 5,000 more parking spaces to the existing 500,000 in the next three years to ease the squeeze. Pasir Ris resident C. Ong, 23, drives her family's second car, which her father bought when she started her studies in Nanyang Technological University. Parking spaces are scarce by the time she gets home in the evening though she has a season parking ticket, so she sometimes parks illegally and risks a fine. Sembawang resident Valerie Toh, 23, also an undergraduate, said her parents each drive their own car and see their wheels as a necessity. Parking spaces are a rare find after 6pm, but they put up with it, she said. Those who own just one car are also vexed. Engineer Henry Chew, 38, of Tampines Street 71, said the multi-storey carpark near his block is always nearly full by 10pm on weekdays. The squeeze is on in condominiums and private estates too; some condo managements have resorted to making residents ballot for spaces or charging them for a second parking spot. In a private estate in Lorong Marzuki last week, cars were parked on both sides of a road with double yellow lines. To avoid parking fines, residents parked just outside their gates, so motorists using the road had to inch their way forward. Dr Lim Wee Kiak, chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Transport and an MP for Sembawang GRC, suggested raising carpark charges, which Associate Professor Lee said may work to discourage people from driving to work or downtown. A survey last month, comparing parking charges across 145 cities, found Asia's most expensive parking spaces in Tokyo and Hong Kong - at $74 and $38 a day respectively. It costs an average of $29 a day to park in prime areas such as Shenton Way and Orchard Road. Prof Lee said that in the suburbs, parking charges could be pegged to the number of cars one owns, with multi-car owners paying higher rates. But Ms Lee Bee Wah, an MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, doubts this will work. She said: 'If residents spend so much on a car, they'll pay for parking even if it's expensive. The solution is twofold - we have to improve public transport and manage the car population.' This means ensuring that even private estates are served by buses and trains, and further reducing the supply of COEs. 'If people think public transport is more affordable and efficient, they will consider it a more viable alternative to buying a car,' she said. [email protected]
