  2. https://itc.international/berlin-marathon-2021-kenenisa-bekele/?cn-reloaded=1 Berlin Marathon 2021 : Kenenisa Bekele an attempt on World Record on Sunday, September 26th. On September 26th, 20201, Ethiopia’s greatest distance runner will attempt a World Record Berlin Marathon. For 39-year-old Bekele, it will be the fourth start in the Berlin Marathon with missing the Marathon World Record by just 2 seconds in the 2019 edition. In all four editions Kenenisa appeared in, he won the Marathon in 2016 and 2019 and let off the course without a finish in 2017. In terms of long-distance track running and cross-country, Kenenisa Bekele is the greatest runner of all time. For a decade and a half, with 11 Gold Medals in World Cross-country, Bekele held the world records over 5,000 meters (12: 37.35 min) and 10,000 meters (26: 17.53 min) on the Track. He added Gold Medals over 5,000 meters at the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2009 World Championships to his collection. Over won Gold Medal over the longer distance, 10,000 meters at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games and 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009 World Championships with a Silver medal at 5000m at Athens Olympics 2004. Despite having all this success, Bekele is still waiting for a world record in Marathon. He failed to finish 50 percent of his last six races over the distance, including the Dubai Marathon in 2017, Berlin Marathon 2017, where he wanted to attack the world record. Bekele’s proven Marathon record Despite dropping out of major marathons, Kenenisa Bekele managed to assert that he can be the king of 42.195 kilometers. In 2016, Bekele missed the world record set by Eliud Kipchoge by six seconds in Berlin. Once again, two years ago in Berlin, Kenenisa Bekele (Ethiopia; 2:01:41 minutes) missed the world record (Kenya; 2:01:39 minutes) by just 2 seconds. Whether this world record gets broken or not on 26th of September, 2021, Bekele may try to keep up his Olympic hopes for Paris 2024 Marathon. @inlinesix@Tianmo

  7. Sibei fast. Under 2hr 3 mins.... https://sg.sports.yahoo.com/news/kenyas-dennis-kimetto-breaks-marathon-world-record-092838412--spt.html AFP News/Tobias Schwarz - Kenya's Dennis Kimetto celebrates winning the 41st edition of the Berlin Marathon on September 28, 2014 in a new world record Kenya's Dennis Kimetto smashed the world record in the Berlin Marathon on Sunday as he made history by becoming the first man to break the 2hr 03min barrier. Dennis Kimetto of Kenya crosses the finish line in a new world record time of 2:02:57 to win the 41st Berlin marathon, …His lightning fast run of 2hr 02min 57sec was the second year running that the record had been broken in Berlin, the previous best being 26 seconds slower -- the 2:03.23 set over the same course last year by compatriot Wilson Kipsang. The performance by the 30-year-old, a former farmer from western Kenya's high-altitude Rift Valley region, delivered a new benchmark in human endurance and cemented the Kenyans' total dominance of international road racing. Dennis Kimetto of Kenya celebrates after winning the 41st Berlin marathon, September 28, 2014. Kimetto finished …"As the race went on, I saw I could do it, I'm delighted to have won," the modest Kimetto said after making history and nudging world leading times close to the two-hour barrier.Kimetto, the pre-race favourite, was part of a seven-man breakaway group after 20km, which included fellow-Kenyans Emmanuel Mutai and Geoffrey Kamworor. But Kimetto shook off Mutai four kilometres from home and crossed the line in record time over what is regarded as the world's fastest marathon course. Mutai finished second, also inside the previous record time with a run of 2:03.13 -- illustrating the depth of Kenya's talent. Dennis Kimetto from Kenya holds a flag after winning the 41st Berlin Marathon in Berlin, Germany, Sunday, Sept. …Ethiopia's Abera Kuma a long way back in third in 2:05.56.Kimetto hails from the town of Eldoret -- a part of the country that has produced some of the most dominant distance runners in history and is emerging as the world's training capital. He was working as a farmer in an impoverished rural area before he took up running in his mid-20s, joining the training group of Geoffrey Mutai -- a Boston, Berlin and two-time New York marathon champion and the former holder of the unofficial world best, a 2:03.02 set in Boston. His first major win came in Nairobi's Half Marathon in 2011, and he went on to finish second behind his training partner Mutai in the Berlin Marathon in 2012. His 2:04.16 was the fastest marathon debut in history, and notable as he is one of a new breed of Kenyan road racers who do not have a track pedigree. In 2013 he won the Tokyo Marathon, setting a course record of 2:06.50, and then the 2013 Chicago Marathon in a course record of 2:03.45 -- where he also beat Emmanuel Mutai into second place. In the women's race, Tirfi Tsegaye led an Ethiopia 1-2, winning in 2:20.18 from Feyse Tadese (2:20.27) -- failing to break the 2:20 barrier and still a way off the 2:15.25 set by Britain's Paula Radcliffe in London in 2003. Shalane Flanagan of the United Statges was third in 2:21.14, a personal best but short of the American record.
  8. Terrorist attacks again? [:(] From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/...-in/639570.html Two killed, 36 injured in Boston Marathon blasts POSTED: 16 Apr 2013 3:40 AM BOSTON, Massachusetts: At least two people were killed and 36 wounded when two explosions struck near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, sparking scenes of panic. Police did not immediately say whether the explosions were part of a terrorist attack, but marathon organizers said it was a twin bombing and media outlets reported that other unexploded devices had been found nearby. The blasts left a street littered with blood and debris, as spectators screamed and fled, paramedics hauled away stretchers and police rushed in, according to witnesses, one of whom saw a man with his lower limbs blown off. Boston Marathon organizers said on Facebook that "two bombs" exploded near the finish line, without providing a source for the information. "We are working with law enforcement to understand what exactly has happened," it said. NBC News, citing officials, earlier reported that police had found "multiple explosive devices" in Boston, raising the possibility of a coordinated attack. The twin explosions come more than a decade after nearly 3,000 people were killed in airplane strikes on New York, Washington and Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. At a hastily convened press conference, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick described a "very fluid situation" as he and other officials implored anyone with information about the incidents to call local tip hotlines. Boston Police Chief Ed Davis said there was a third explosion at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, but the library later said there was an electrical fire that had been extinguished without causing any injuries. A video clip posted online appeared to show one of the marathon explosions going off, apparently several feet back from the barricades and the line of national flags separating the race spectators and the street. One runner is seen staggering and then falling, while others keep going for a few more steps. Volunteers in yellow jackets cover their ears at the sound of the blast. "We saw people with their legs blown off," Mark Hagopian, owner of the Charlesmark Hotel, told AFP from the basement of a restaurant where he had sought shelter. "A person next to me had his legs blown off at the knee -- he was still alive. "It was bad, it was fast," he said. "There was a gigantic explosion... we felt wind on our faces... Police were saying: 'Get out, get out, leave, leave there may be more bombs.'" Nineteen wounded people were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, including six who required emergency surgery, according to Alasdair Conn, head of emergency services. He added that several of the injured required "traumatic amputations" at the scene or at the hospital. Boston Medical Centre said it received 20 patients, including two children, from the site of the marathon explosions. "Most of these patients have lower leg injuries," it said in a brief statement. The Boston Police Twitter account had earlier said two people were killed and 23 wounded. Officials at the press conference declined to discuss the exact number of casualties. US President Barack Obama was notified about the incident, and his administration was in contact with state and local authorities, a White House official said. Obama called Patrick and Boston mayor Tom Menino to express his concern for the injured and to offer support. He was to make a statement at 2210 GMT. Security was stepped up in New York and Washington, as well as in Los Angeles and San Francisco. In the Big Apple, police said they were boosting security at hotels and "other prominent locations in the city." The blasts in Boston rattled US markets, sending the Dow and the S&P 500 down at the close. "Praying for those at the Boston Marathon today," said one of the US senators from Massachusetts, Elizabeth Warren. The Senate observed a moment of silence, and the House of Representatives was to follow suit. The Boston Marathon is one of the biggest annual athletic events held in the United States, with nearly 27,000 racers who must qualify to compete and tens of thousands of spectators. The race attracts world-class athletes, most of whom would have likely completed the race a couple hours before the blast went off. The video clip of the blast showed the marathon timeclock at 4:09:44. - AFP/fa

  17. Twin separated in marathon operation dies: newspaper AFP - Wednesday, July 30SINGAPORE, July 30, 2008 (AFP) - One of two conjoined Nepalese twins separated in a marathon operation in Singapore seven years ago has died in their homeland, a newspaper reported Wednesday. ADVERTISEMENT Ganga Shrestha, eight, died after admission to hospital on Monday with meningitis, The Straits Times reported. "I will always remember her feisty spirit... At least now, her spirit is free of her disabled body," Singaporean neurosurgeon Keith Goh was quoted as saying by the newspaper. He was one of the lead surgeons on the team which separated Ganga and her twin sister, Jamuna, during a 97-hour operation in 2001, the paper said. The children were joined at the head when they were born. Singaporeans raised more than 660,000 dollars (now 484,000 US) to help the babies, and the surgeons waived their charges. The operation left Ganga with brain damage and Jamuna unable to walk, the newspaper said, adding that three years ago they returned to Singapore for additional treatment. Then they returned to Nepal. Jamuna drags herself around on her arms. Schools in Kathmandu have refused to enrol her because part of her brain is still unprotected by bone, the newspaper reported. It quoted her grandfather as saying she finds it hard to accept the death of her sister, and cannot stop crying.
