  1. Construction starts on NS Square at Marina Bay The grandstand at NS Square will seat about 30,000 people, allowing more spectators at the National Day Parade each year. SINGAPORE: Construction on the NS Square venue in Singapore's downtown centre started on Tuesday (Mar 19), with an expected completion date by 2027. The redevelopment of a floating platform at Marina Bay into NS Square was announced in 2017 and initially slated for completion at end-2025, but faced delays during the COVID-19 pandemic. Once completed, NS Square will become a national landmark for all Singaporeans, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said at a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday. “NS Square aims to be a place for NSmen and their families to enjoy the peace and prosperity of a Singapore which they have protected over the years,” he said. “It will be another jewel to add to the already impressive skyline around Marina Bay ... and one given over to NSmen and their families to show our country’s deep appreciation.” When completed, NS Square will house a permanent stage and grandstand for large-scale annual events like the National Day Parade and Marina Bay year-end countdown. Its circular grandstand bowl with cantilevered structures spanning up to 25m will be a first in Southeast Asia, according to the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). The seats, which curve around the stage, will accommodate about 30,000 people – more than the 27,000 that The Float @ Marina Bay used to hold. The space can also be configured for different events such as concerts and sports competitions, or used for recreation and weekend markets, said MINDEF. Other public amenities include eateries and a water sports centre for canoeing, kayaking and dragon-boating. The centre will also have an elevated swimming pool. A waterfront promenade will wrap around the stage, forming part of a continuous loop around Marina Bay that will be open year-round, said MINDEF. As a tribute to all past and present national servicemen and their families, NS Square will also have a gallery themed around National Service. It will display hardware from the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force, and have an immersive exhibition space and viewing gallery of the city skyline. The construction tender for NS Square was awarded to Expand Construction last year, while the design consultancy tender was awarded to WOHA Architects in 2020. The facility incorporates sustainability features like solar panels on the roofs, which will also be planted with greenery for rainwater retention and to keep the building cool. More than 80 per cent of the development will be ventilated naturally or mechanically. Air-conditioning in remaining areas will come from the Marina Bay district cooling network, which uses an energy-efficient centralised chilled water system.   2. The retail store is a “first of its kind” all-glass dome structure and boasts Apple's first underwater boardroom. And its architecture was partly inspired by Rome's Pantheon. When Apple Marina Bay Sands opens its doors to the public on Thursday (Sep 10), it will be the world’s first Apple store to sit directly on the water – an eye-catching spherical structure that will boast an uninterrupted 360-degree panoramic view of Singapore’s skyline. It’s an architectural treat of sorts – the dome was inspired by Rome's Pantheon, for one. And according to Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president for retail and people, this “first of its kind” all-glass dome structure comprises 114 pieces of glass, with only 10 narrow vertical mullions serving as a structural connection. But more than just bragging rights for local fanboys and fangirls, Apple’s decision to to do it here is an affirmation of the tech giant’s affinity for Singapore. “We're here for the long term in Singapore,” O’Brien said in an exclusive interview with CNA Lifestyle. “We couldn't be more excited to open the breathtaking Apple Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, building on our commitment to this special place that began over 40 years ago”. It is Singapore's third Apple Store, after the first one opened its doors along Orchard Road in 2017 and its most recent one at Jewel Changi Airport. It’s also Apple's 512th retail shop. Apple’s history in Singapore began with the tech giant’s first corporate office in Ang Mo Kio 40 years ago – and there’s a fun fact that comes with that. In 1981, the team was responsible for producing the majority of printed circuit boards for Apple II computers worldwide. Since then, Apple has expanded across the corporate and retail side, and is now responsible for 55,000 jobs in Singapore, between Apple and the Apple ecosystem. For those who keep count, Apple Marina Bay Sands will be staffed with 148 employees who collectively speak over 23 languages. When asked why open this particularly designed store here, O'Brien said: "When we were looking for another opportunity in Singapore. This one was just really was quite intriguing. And when we really understood the opportunities that this location could provide, giving us the opportunity to do something really neat and interesting and different." So what’s the interior like? Aside from the oculus at the top of the dome, which allows light to come in, the interior of the glass is lined with custom baffles, which are shaped to counter the daytime glare and provide a night-time lighting effect. There are also 10 trees along the perimeter, providing additional shading and soft shadows through the foliage. The Forum is centered around the video wall, which will serve as the stage for Singapore’s musicians and creatives. In addition to free future Today At Apple sessions hosted by Apple creatives. PM Lee reveals how Float@Marina Bay, renamed as NS Square, will look like in 2025 It is likely to be completed by end 2025, though the timeline may be adjusted because of Covid-19. PM also revealed how the NS Square would look like when it is completed. In 2017, PM Lee announced the redevelopment of the Float into a permanent space to serve as the primary venue for NDP. PM Lee said that the space will commemorate National Service (NS), and the central role that NS plays in Singapore. NS Square central focus of new downtown PM Lee described how NS Square will be designed: "The development will be aligned on a central axis, with The Promontory on the opposite side of the Bay. The platform will become a red dot, shining bright in our city. NS Square will be the central focus of our new downtown". The government has awarded the design consultancy tender to a team led by WOHA Architects. Redevelopment works are scheduled to start in March 2022 and completed by end 2025. The project scope and timeline may be adjusted because of Covid-19. The venue will feature various community sports facilities, such as a swimming pool and water sports centre, as well as a new waterfront promenade. PM Lee noted that when NS recruits complete their Basic Military Training (BMT), they gather their families and friends at the Float and hold their passing out parade there. Hence, the government will build a gallery there to showcase Singapore's NS story, and honour the contributions of national servicemen past and present. "NS Square will also be a community space for everyone, young and old, to enjoy", he said.
  4. SINGAPORE: It's that time of the year where you spot random people toting giant plush toys on the MRT. That's right, the Prudential Marina Bay Carnival is back in town, offering more than the chance to win an over-sized toy unicorn, a rainbow lion or a pug with doe eyes. The carnival - touted as Singapore's biggest - opened its doors to the public on Saturday (Dec 22) with 22 rides, three of them new. Notably, prices for most rides have been lowered this year, with the exception of that for the Mach 5 which is priced at 14 tokens. And if you’re worried about long lines, here's a quick cheat sheet on what's worth the wait. 1. Freak Out/Spring Break A new addition to the carnival, this ride starts off easy, but at full throttle, it’s a heart-stopping thrill. Not knowing which or what way you’ll be spinning, while plunging down face-forward definitely adds to the exhilaration. Just remember to keep your game face on at all times – the ride's seating arrangement allows full view of your fellow riders and their scream faces. 2. Wave Swinger This new ride is as family friendly as they come. It was flown in from Italy for the first time to Southeast Asia and features mural panels of iconic Singapore landmarks such as Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands. But be warned, it quickens to an exciting spin after a couple of slow and steady beginning rounds. Perfect reason for dating couples to cling on to each other. 3. Jumper Jumper An experience that would make 90s hip-hop duo Kris Kross so proud, this turned out to be the most unexpected ride of the lot. Incredibly harmless to start before descending into a series of stomach-churning twists, turns and giant hops. Imagine jumping and spinning around on an office chair. 4. The Star Flyer No visit to the carnival is complete without an Insta-friendly shot of the neon-lit Star Flyer which rises almost poetically amongst the steely backdrop of CBD buildings. It moves at a slower pace than the Wave Swinger. 5. Mach 5 Still the most expensive ride in the carnival at 14 tokens, but definitely worth going on for a stomach-dropping spin. Hop on the impressive 55m-tall monster mechanical arm for a great view of Singapore at its peak, before plunging down at 130 kmh and finishing off with 360-degree flips. S$3 million worth of carnival prizes Tossing a ring on a bottle, flinging a hoop over a Carebear or knocking a trio of milk jugs down with a ball – it all sounds easy but let's just say the games look deceptively simple. If you do manage to score a giant unicorn or banana plushie, a Yoda doll or a sequinned doughnut – remember to hoist it on your shoulders so everyone knows you're a champion. There's also a grand lucky draw with a S$10,000 prize. 7. Food, glorious food The food on offer isn't your usual carnival fare of hot dogs, candy floss and popcorn. You can get a bucket of meatballs (chicken or beef) from Sofnade heaped on twister fries and potato mash topped with cheese sauce and cranberry (S$12) or a bucket of milk tea or lemonade (S$7). There's also an assortment of churros flavours – ondeh ondeh, Oreo, chilli crab, salted egg from Loco Loco (S$6 a cup). For those who need a bigger carb-hit, SingaIndo serves up various Indomie dishes including Aburi shrimp mentaiko, a super-spicy sambal gila, Thai basil and cheesy cheese. The carnival will be open from 4pm to 11pm daily save Jan 18, Jan 24 and Feb 15, 2019 and runs all the way till Mar 24. It is just a stone's throw away from Bayfront MRT station.

Between them, the luxury liner Queen Mary II of the Cunard Cruise Line and Voyager of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean International, can take more than 5,000 passengers. It created a bottleneck of vehicles arriving and going. Though Thursday's incident was especially protracted, traffic congestion is one of a string of problems to plague MBCCS since it began operations in May 2012.   7. There are 2 new road systems that have been opened on our shores and this is a glimpse at where these roads can take you... The spanking new 1.9km long dual-two lane viaduct will allow motorists a direct connection from Bartley Road East to Bartley Road, and will fly-over the usually congested trio; Airport Road, Hougang Avenue 3 and Upper Paya Lebar Road. With the completion of the Bartley Road extension project, road users from Tampines and Bedok will have a smoother, uninterrupted route to Central Singapore via Bartley Road and Braddell Road. This new connection from Central Singapore to the East will ease the headache of traveling on the PIE as it opens a new alternative route to travel to the East. Motorists heading towards the Kaki Bukit Industrial Estate will also welcome the new route as it is an additional road connection to that area. As part of the opening, a new road, Bartley Road East, which runs parallel to the viaduct, will also be opened to traffic. As the Marina Bay Singapore Integrated Resort is set to open soon, a new bridge will span across Marina Bay and the new Bayfront Ave which connects Temasek Ave to Central Boulevard and Marina Boulevard. This will serve as another route to motorists entering the CBD. Once the bridge is completed at the end of the first quarter of 2010, there will be a dreaded ERP gantry which will be installed along Bayfront Ave leading towards Temasek Boulevard to make sure we lose more money around the Bugis-Marina Centre ERP zone. The new roads are set to serve the Marina Bay Financial Centre and should be completed by the third quarter of this year, the Shenton Way-Chinatown ERP zone will also be tweaked to include new developments in the Marina Bay area. The gantry along Central Boulevard will be abolished and replaced by a new gantry at Marina Way. There's more bad news for all us ERP haters...Two other gantries will be installed, one on the other side of Bayfront Avenue and one at Marina Station Road leading into Central Boulevard to close off the Shenton Way-Chinatown zone. ERP gantries are popping up everywhere and I wonder whether its implementation is serving any useful purpose other than to increase our government's income. ERP gantries along the CTE and even in the City don't really help to ease congestion, its a possible case of Animal Farm here where the once noble purpose of reducing traffic congestion becomes a money spinner. When do these gantries start to suck away our money? Only the LTA will know.. and they will announce the operating hours and rates once the Marina Bridge is closer to completion.
