  11. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-24618701 US drone strike killings in Pakistan and Yemen 'unlawful' CIA drone attacks in Pakistan are responsible for unlawful killings, some of which could amount to war crimes, Amnesty International says. Amnesty said it reviewed nine recent drone strikes in North Waziristan and found a number of victims were unarmed. In a separate report looking at six US attacks in Yemen, Human Rights Watch says two of them killed civilians at random, violating international law. Drone warfare has become common in the US pursuit of al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Few details are known about the covert US drone operation. Senior al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders have been killed in drone strikes in Pakistan, but civilians have also died. These attacks cause outrage in Pakistan, where many assert that the strikes cause indiscriminate deaths and injuries. Last week, a UN investigation found that US drone strikes had killed at least 400 civilians in Pakistan, far more than the US has ever acknowledged. UN special rapporteur Ben Emmerson accused the US of challenging international legal norms by advocating the use of lethal force outside war zones. Establishing precise casualty figures and identifying the dead in such attacks is virtually impossible as independent media are barred from tribal areas near the Afghan border. 'Very tight leash' Amnesty said it had investigated nine of 45 recently reported attacks by US drones, unmanned aircraft operated remotely in control rooms, often on other continents. The group called on the US to disclose information and the legal basis for strikes carried out in Pakistan. In the report, Will I Be Next? US Drone Strikes in Pakistan, the rights group named several victims who, it says, had been unarmed and "posed no threat to life". In October 2012, 68-year-old grandmother Mamana Bibi was killed in a double strike as she picked vegetables in the family's fields while surrounded by her grandchildren, said the report. It said US President Barack Obama's pledge earlier this year to increase transparency around drone strikes had not been fulfilled. "This secrecy has enabled the USA to act with impunity and block victims from receiving justice or compensation. As far as Amnesty is aware, no US official has ever been held to account for unlawful killings by drones in Pakistan," the report said. It called on the governments of Pakistan, Australia, Germany and the UK to investigate drone strikes or other abuses that may constitute human rights violations. Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch said in its report that six US drone attacks in Yemen killed 82 people, including at least 57 civilians. It added that two of the strikes killed innocent people indiscriminately. A controversial aspect of the US policy is that drone attacks are carried out not by the military but by the Central Intelligence Agency. US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has argued in favour of the policy, saying that the US will continue to defend itself. President Obama has insisted the strategy was "kept on a very tight leash" and that without the drones, the US would have had to resort to "more intrusive military action".
  12. Saw this interesting article from WIRED. Share with you guys. A shapeshifting reptile from outer space guards President Obama, according to a new conspiracy video. Yet according to the White House, the extraterrestrial heft behind Obama
  13. http://www.politico.com/story/2013/02/stat...550_Page10.html I happen to see live in CNA this morning, his entire speech on screen. Though I'm not into American politics, but I must say Obama is very impressive with what he said and promises. His policies are focused on local domestic problems like creating jobs for Americans, improve infrastructure etc. What grip me was his focus on local americans , their jobs, welfare , affordable housings, middle income problems, childcare education, college places for local Americans. Never once his speech was on foreign talents and workers. He talked to CEOs and they all want to hire local Americans. Obama deserved the Presidency job. So what the F wrong with our system???

  19. Many would have already known about Saab's bankruptcy and the following aftermath. After the Swedish company filed for bankruptcy, several companies have made bids for the ailing company's remaining assets. They include China's Youngman, and India's Mahindra Mahindra and Tata Motors. And it was also reported that the company has a total debt of around $1500 million. In the latest twist to the Saab saga, a Swedish workers union, IF Metall, has send a letter to the United States president, Barack Obama, requesting for help in order to save the once proud Swedish marque. Most people might think that they are requesting for a bailout, like what happened to Chrysler. Instead, they want the United States government to pressure General Motors into releasing access to some of the technology licenses which are necessary to build the Saab 9-4X (pictured above) and the 9-5. By doing so, the Swedish automaker's new owners would be able to build Saabs once again providing salvation for over 4000 of Saab
  20. I must say his term is rather Tiger head Snake tail. Got elected on a surge of Hope and Change but it got bogged down by partisan politics and petered out after that. For his whole term he has been skirting the issue of gay mariage but now he is in support of it. Signs of desperation?
  21. It looks like the Chevrolet volt fails to create that spark with consumers. Low sales volume and high inventory, which stands at 6,300 vehicles at end of Feb 2012, caused General Motors to make the decision to halt the production of the Volt and Opel Ampera (European version of the Volt) for five weeks. At the current buying rate for the Volt, the current inventory can last for 154 days. The shutdown will cause 1300 employees to be temporarily laid off. The production hiatus comes after a retooling break that only ended in early February. The upcoming shutdown is scheduled to last from March 19 to April 23. As a GM spokesman commented, "We're matching our production levels with demand and building to market." If the sales is so poor at the moment, it seems like a poor business decision to spend money to retool the plant. Or, they could have scheduled the retooling to coincide with the plant shutdown. In 2011, the GM moved 7,671 units of the Volt, which is far short of the 10,000 unit sales target. In January 2012, GM only sold 1,023 Volts, the lowest in the past five months. It looks like GM needs to do a lot more to promote the Volt if the company wants to meet the sales target of 45,000 Volts in US this year. President Obama has personally endorsed the Volt by saying that he intends to buy one when he leaves the office in five years

    Chevrolet Volt

The Chevrolet Volt has become a political punching bag as the Republicans accused the Obama administration of hiding fire risks from the public. In response, General Motors (GM) says that the administration has no seat on the board and no influence over business decisions. The automaker added that its signature electric vehicle got unfairly caught in political crosswinds. Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Oversight regulatory subcommittee, said it was disturbing that U.S. safety regulators waited six months to open a formal investigation after their own crash tests uncovered fire risks. He speculated that the administration may have been preserving its own interests as President Barack Obama has heavily promoted electric vehicles like the Volt, and his administration oversaw a U.S. government bailout and bankruptcy restructuring of GM in 2009. GM Chief Executive, Dan Akerson, told the hearing that the Volt got "disproportionate scrutiny" because it became a surrogate for election-year politics and commentary on GM's business and Obama administration policy. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation on 25 November 11 into the safety of the Volt's battery pack after its own repeated tests uncovered fire risks. The fires occurred after NHTSA crash tests or other tests where the car's lithium-ion batteries were purposely damaged, and GM has stressed that no "real world" incidents have been reported. General Motors has sold more than 8,000 Volts, including 1,500 in December 2011, its best month so far. Another 6,500 units have been manufactured. All will undergo retrofits to provide better protection for the battery in event of a crash. GM will also take steps to reduce chances of coolant leaks, which can trigger fires.
  23. For years, the Detroit Three have moved production out of their U.S plants to avoid the high cost of union labor. In October 2011, Ford Motor Co. signed a tentative labor contract with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union that partly reverses that trend. The new four-year contract includes adding 12,000 hourly jobs at its U.S facilities over the next four years as a result of relocation of production from Mexico, Japan and China back to America. The move by Ford has earned itself praises from no less than the US President himself, Barack Obama. Mr Obama sited Ford as an example of companies that are bringing jobs back to the US and contributing to the growth of its economy. At the same time, he also credited the effort to the UAW for making the deal possible. In the next few weeks, the President plans to introduce new tax proposals to reward companies that are investing in the US and cut tax breaks for companies that are moving their operations out of the US. An underutilized factory in Flat Rock, Michigan will help build the next generation Fusion mid-sized car that to date has been produced only in Mexico. Another Ford plant in Kentucky will assemble commercial vans that the company now builds in Turkey. All of the new hires are expected to earn slightly more than half of what the veteran auto workers get. This is to ensure that the US is cost competitive against its foreign rivals.
