If anything, you won't be mistaking the Land Rover Defender for anything less than it is, especially given its size. Make a mental note and be a little more careful when you're entering certain car parks with this car. Boot space is generous in the Land Rover Defender, with 857 litres of space for all your bags and such. Also, unlike most cars, the Defender's boot doesn't open upwards, it swings outward towards the right. Unconventional, but keeping with the tradition on how a Defender's boot has always been opened. The Land Rover Defender comes with 4 USB charging ports in the rear alone, on top of the 12V socket. Running out of battery for your precious smartphone is unlikely to happen once you are riding in the Land Rover Defender. Not to mention, rear climate controls, which is a true benefit given Singapore's hot and humid weather. Perhaps one of the coolest features on the new Land Rover Defender is the digital rear view mirror. On top of the traditional rear view mirror, the Defender also comes with a camera mounted on the roof that provides a rear view image to the driver in the cabin. Idris puts it in the best way, that the Land Rover Defender is not meant to be sporty. But take it off-road, and that's where you will see its true prowess shine. With a new Land Rover Defender due in 2017 (the current one bows out of the market next year), Mercedes-Benz will reportedly introduce a major update to its G-Class around the same time in order to keep the rivalry between the ultimate utilities alive. While the new Defender will be an all-new model, complete with new styling, engines and underpinnings, the G-Class is only expected to receive an update, though the changes to the vehicle are said to be so extensive they could be considered a complete redesign. The information was revealed by insiders to Drive, which reports that engineers are focused on improving the G-Class’s stability, both on and off the road. Expect to see a wider track, made necessary by wider wheels and new suspension designed to boost interior space. Increased aluminum and high-strength steel will also be utilized to help shed weight, possibly reducing the current model’s 5,665-lb curb weight by as much as 440 pounds. Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force off-road concept The updated G-Class will also benefit from Mercedes-Benz’s latest tech, including electronic power steering, new driver assistance features and the latest in connectivity and infotainment. Interestingly, we hear that 2012’s Ener-G-Force concept car will influence some of the vehicle’s exterior styling, although the classic boxy look should remain. As for the powertrains, look for the German automaker’s new straight-six gasoline and diesel units. These will displace 3.0 liters and deliver up to 360 horsepower in some guises thanks to turbocharging and direct fuel injection. Of course, more powerful AMG variants will still be on offer, as they currently account for more than 50 percent of G-Class sales worldwide.
  4. The creative minds at MINI are at work again. This time round, they created a pickup-like off-roader based on the Cooper S Paceman ALL4. Dubbed the Paceman Adventure, the unique variant is the result of a creative collaboration between young apprentices and their instructors at the BMW plant in Munich and Dingolfing. And while the idea of an off-roader is nothing new, the result is pretty spectacular if you ask us. The Adventure looks at home off the beaten tracks. The two-seater pickup also seems to make light work fording in swampy terrain, no thanks to 184 horses sent to all wheels via the marque's ALL4 drive technology. It is unlikely that the cargo area will do some serious loot tugging. But otherwise, the Adventure comes equipped with proper stuffs to keep it going in the wild, such as a modified chassis with extended ground clearance and much higher front and rear clearance ramps. The snorkel-like air intake also suggests that it will rise up to the occasion should you encounter any river crossing. Much to our disappointment, however, there are no plans for the Adventure to go for series production.
  5. It's no longer a secret that Hummer is no longer in production today. Yet, does it ever come across your mind what the real reason is? Well, while some may say it's because of the rather old fashioned look the model sports, we'll say that it's because the Hummer H2 is actually a disguise of some sort of an old Chevrolet Tahoe, for example. Unfortunately, the Russians didn't actually know what the Hummer was all about, at least not until this hilarious Russian video went live on the internet. Well, considering they're half the world apart, it may be understandable. However, after watching this video, you should realise that instead of being a dream American All-Wheel Drive (AWD) V8 'conquer-any-terrain-and-obstacle' vehicle, the Hummer H2 is actually a go-nowhere vehicle. Just imagine, the car can't even climb a small concrete block. As you can see in the video, the Hummer drivetrain sends power to the rear instead of the front tyres, which is a clear reason it isn't climbing the concrete block. Eventually, as you can tell, the rear tyres go deeper into the snow and just remain there. Hilarious!

    Jeep-ing

    When it comes to serious off-road capabilities, Jeep undoubtedly is the choice. With over 69 years in producing off-road vehicles, they should be doing it well too. This 4x4 legend is something of an icon by itself. I have never seen any other car brand being stamped on t-shirts with so many people wearing them. My guess is that in our boxed up world, the notion of "Go Anywhere, Do Anything" (Jeep's tag line) tug deep at our hearts. Although Jeep's lineup consist of many different vehicles, nothing epitomizes it's sense of freedom more than the Jeep Wrangler. Driving it here however, is hard work. To drive with the top down, the soft top has to be taken down manually, a back breaking, muscle bulging work that takes up a good 20mins or so. There are also no power windows, or power locks! (Pre 2010 ver.) The steering is taught and heavy, although it comes with much road feel. When performing a u-turn, it takes some strength to control the steering wheel from eagerly springing back to centre. However, all the manual work brings about a flavour to this car, much akin to driving a classic, retro vehicle. You feel different and special. Without cushy interiors surrounding you, driving the Wrangler with the top down ushers in the environment around providing a very raw driving feel (The Mini Beachcomber concept is pretty similar to the Wrangler). Imagine the tram ride at the Zoo, and you will get what I mean, the connection with the environment is what gives Jeep that feeling of "Freedom". Now, imagine the same tram ride combined with a 3.8L V6 and a supremely tough chassis. The Wrangler will make you feel like the other cars on the road are toys. Although it's off-road purpose might never be fulfilled in Singapore, it is still fun negotiating the "urban jungle". The Wrangler is one vehicle that will make mince meat of any humps or curbs, crossing a hump at 50km/h is no big deal. Sadly, my friend sold his jeep due to it's high running cost (other than the hefty road tax, it is also thirsty as well), in place he got a Renault Koleos which banishes him to the confines of 4 Doors, a Roof and a Boring ride. He misses his yellow Jeep and so do I. Freedom!
