  1. In the 2010s, a Mercedes C250 was worth about $200,000 when it launched. So you know inflation is getting bad when someone who could afford that just a decade ago can’t even pay their parking fees anymore. What happened? On 27 April in the carpark of Parklane Shopping Mall, a Mercedes C250 driver decided to just ram the parking barrier arm instead of paying his parking fees. Or perhaps it was an accident? The Mercedes initially approached slowly, before a burst of acceleration caused a hit on the barrier arm before braking. Regardless of what it may have been, the Merc drove off soon after. Maybe he’s saving to renew his COE. We all know how much THAT costs now. And with core inflation at 5% now perhaps even people who can drive such vehicles are feeling the pinch too. On the other hand, if you check on the Wayback Machine, Parklane Shopping Mall's price for parking hasn't gone up either so... Maybe just stingy? Online chatter Of course people will bring up the irony of someone driving a car worth a couple hundred thousand, but is unable to spare maybe 5 bucks for parking. A couple of people also suggested "solutions" to discourage others from following this driver's example. ========= Be the first to get the latest road/ COE news and get first dibs on exclusive promos and giveaways in our Telegram SGCM Community. 2. TL;DR - Shame shame as this cheapo Toyota Hiace evades parking fee by tailgating after alighting passengers at Parklane. To be specific, a couple of well-endowed chio-bus’. This Hiace driver in the video seems like a pretty experienced tailgater. Watch this 84-second video clip to see what i mean. What happened? The incident took place at Parklane shopping mall’s car park where the Hiace tried to follow closely (and succeeded) to tailgate the car in front of him, just to avoid paying for parking. The video footag shows that the driver had just dropped a group of skimpily dressed ‘chio-bus’ (not that we can tell from the footage but I’d think so) off, where netizens are assuming they are working at one of the bars/KTV there. Online Chatter Undoubtedly, there has been an increased occurrence of payment evasion offences, with most being committed by tailgating. Is it worth committing an offence just to save a few bucks? Hmm. Cautionary Reminder A motorist who fails to keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, and as a result is involved in an accident, may be charged with the offence of Driving Without Due Care or Reasonable Consideration. The first offence carries a fine not exceeding $1,500, an imprisonment term not exceeding six months, or both. Subsequent offences carry higher penalties. 3. With advanced technologies these days, drivers never (or hardly) get charged with incorrect parking fees. Even if there is such an occurrence, it is often the driver's fault - Eg. Driving out of MSCP without renewing season parking, forgetting to remove cashcard before inserting complimentary parking coupon (The list goes on). And sadly, all we can do as drivers is to suck it up, pay our "tuition fees", and learn from our mistakes. However, this entitled BMW 730LI driver did otherwise when met in a similar situation: What Happened? A BMW driver decided to pull a selfish and inconsiderate act by ditching his BMW 730LI luxury sedan right at the nose of Mandai Connection's carpark gantry after allegedly having a dispute with the building's security over $10 in parking charges. Subsequently, he went to the guard post to dispute with the building's security over his parking charges, while his car was still parked at the gantry of the carpark's entrance. The inconsiderate and absurd act of the BMW driver caused a 30-minute jam at the building's entrance, causing traffic to pile back into both directions of the main road. According to the user that submitted the video, the police were called in for assistance on this matter. However, the BMW driver left the scene before the police arrived. Netizens' Comments The mandatory "drive conti but no money to pay for parking" comments😎 I also wonder how thick-skin must one be to hold up the traffic for 30-minutes just to settle your parking dispute🤦‍♂️ Indeed, a special breed of men. ========= Be the first to get the latest road/ COE news, and get first dibs on exclusive promos and giveaways in our Telegram SGCM Community. 4. TL:DR – The title says it all. The owner claims that he ended up paying the $6.52 in the end, and the accumulated fines were due to the inability to navigate slopes at the MSCP because of the GTR’s lowered stance. When you drive an eye-catching car like a Nissan GTR, you’d better be on your best behaviour on the roads. There are digital eyes everywhere! Trying to escape paying carpark fees is not an example of ‘best behaviour’. Here’s the video for a weekend laugh. Updates on SGRV While normal tailgating out of carpark videos can be mundane, this update piqued my interest. The fines Let’s have a look at the fines. HOW IN THE WORLD DOES ONE RACK UP SUCH AN INSANE AMOUNT OF PARKING FINES? The whole argument that “Home MSCP too steep” is also somewhat weak. Park at an open-air carpark maybe? Does this car look familiar? So, we did some searching for GTRs on sgCarMart like we do every day (just to drool over things we cannot afford) and we found this: Compare that with the GTR in the video. I'm sorry this was the best shot we could get.... it's lowered after all. Do you think the hood vents on the body kits look somewhat similar? If they are the one and the same, that’s defnitely a creative way to ‘siam’ the $4000+ parking fines. Online Chatter Zero logic. Absolutely zero. 5. I posted an article on MCF on the parking charges at MacRitchie Reservoir slight more than a year ago (http://www.mycarforum.com/blog/myautoblog/160/welcome-to-macritchie-reservoir-to-pay/). My running buddy told me that there were some amendments made to it and I decided to do some research. The extracted information from sgcarmart.com shows that the 1st hour of parking from 11am to 5pm is free during weekdays; and the 1st hr of parking from 2pm to 5pm is free on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Well, this is a welcomed amendment made but I am not sure of the purpose of it. I believe the change is to attract more visitors to the park and at the same time, deter non-park users from taking advantage of the free parking. If that is the case, the change is not very effective. It would be better if the period of 1st hour of free parking on all days is from 7am to 10am & 5pm to 8pm. Very few people would go to the park and be under the mercy of the sun between 11am to 5pm and 2pm to 5pm. My suggestion would benefit people who wants to do their morning or evening workout. Of course, it would be a bonus if the free parking can be extended to 2 hours. I hope that the relevant authorities read this posting and make the necessary adjustment.
