  1. The automobile industry has lost another legendary designer. Sergio Pininfarina, best known for running the company that bore his name, passed away on 3rd July evening at his home in Turin, Italy. He was 85 years old and no cause of death was given. Born on 8th September 1926, Sergio went on to receive a degree in mechanical engineering from the Polytechnic of Torino in 1950. He started his career at his father's coach building and design company, Carrozzeria Pinin Farina, as the General Manager in 1960. He eventually became the chairman following the death of his father, Battista Pinin Farina, in 1966. During his tenure, the company created some of the most iconic automobiles in history. Among them are, according to chronological order: 1984 Ferrari Testarossa 1986 Fiat 124 Spider 1986 Cadillac Allante 1987 Alfa Romeo 164 1995 Bentley Azure 1996 Peugeot 406 Coupe 2002 Ferrari Enzo 2003 Maserati Quattroporte 2004 Ferrari Scaglietti In 2006, he stepped down as president of Pininfarina and became Honorary Chairman of the company. Pininfarina was active in politics as well. Between 1979 and 1988, he was a Liberal Party Member of the European Parliament (MEP), where his party was a part of the European Liberal Democrat alliance. Pininfarina leaves behind a wife and two sons.
