An Early Look at the 2023 Toyota Prius Prime XSE Premium

Source: https://hypebeast.com/2023/4/toyota-prius-prime-xse-2023-early-look Toyota has just revealed its latest Prius Prime model for 2023 and, with its clear restyling and hybrid performance improvements from the previous generation, it could be the new choice for the discerning car consumer in a “sea of electricity.” The all-new Prius – which was announced earlier this year – arrived with fanfare around its substantially new design, and the Prime maximizes itself in the looks department. To summarize, the Prius Prime is sleek, with a radically raked front windshield that’s more “sports coupe” than “efficient city car.” A sloping rear roof that drops off suddenly at the hatch lip gives an almost boxy-yet-futuristic angle to the rear, while a flat rear bumper complements the front’s near-90º angled fascia. Speaking of the rear, the Prime is actually wider than the previous generation, which is a bold move from Toyota since a wider stance would actually harm efficiency. More on that and these decisions later. The Prime XSE Premium is also equipped with 19” machine-finished wheels that sit two inches lower than the previous generation. This stance and the large wheels give the appearance of aggression and again goes against the grain of efficiency, yet works well with the Prius Prime’s appeal. Sharp angular LED headlights, a low and pronounced front air dam, rear LED light bar and rear door handles at the C-pillar are other visual choices that make the new Prius Prime stand out. Inside, the cabin feels more refined and evolutionary, with driver-passenger enhancements to touch points and visuals being the main takeaway. Dashes of red – at the dashboard, shifter and even on the seats – adorned our test car’s interior that gave the rather-boring black upholstery a much needed pop. We also liked the dual digital screens, acting as the gauge cluster and infotainment center. Bonus points for all the climate controls being accessible through knobs and buttons rather than within menus, and for the volume knob too although it was a bit far for the driver to reach. The most surprising element within the cabin was the steering wheel, which felt small in hand, giving the impression that whoever designed it had handling and dare-we-say “sportiness” in mind. Performance-wise, the Prius isn’t a sports car, but has shown improvement over the last gen. Inside are two motors: a 2.0L gas-powered engine good for 150 horsepower, and a 161 hp electric motor working in conjunction. The net total of both comes to 220 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque that allows the Prius Prime to accelerate from 0-60 in 6.6 seconds – the previous Prius was up in the sevens. While not sports car territory, acceleration in six seconds is competitive against the Audi A3 e-tron Sportback at 6.5s, the BMW i3 at 6.6s and even the turbo-four cylinder Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 at 6.5s. Overall the car felt zippy when it needed to be and the power should be more than enough for most people, but certainly not for the enthusiasts. So why did Toyota create a new Prius with big wheels, a wider body and a lower stance, all of which go against the ideals of maximum efficiency? For once, the hybrid Prius is a contender against the “new norm” of electric cars you see on the road. The Prius’s design alone adds a new layer for consumers in search of a car that looks great and drives well, even if it sacrifices a bit of efficiency. Back in the early 2000s, most can remember looking at the Prius and scorning it for being bland and boring; for Toyota to flip that script and now be considered an alternative to a new defacto is invariably a bold statement, and that’s what makes the new Prius different, daring, and possibly even “cool.” The Toyota Prius Prime XSE Premium starts at $39,170 USD and begins shipping in May. If you’re looking for something from Toyota that’s no compromises, the GR Corolla is the latest in the sporty offerings department. -

Is encountering slower drivers on the road an excuse to do a dangerous overtake? Watch this video and decide for yourself. Watch as the incident unfolds just outside of a school: In the video, we can see that the Transcab Prius is attempting to do an overtake, using the lane with potential oncoming traffic. Super dangerous move. If there actually was oncoming traffic, the head-on collision would certainly have a high chance of fatality, especially considering the speeds that the taxi driver is travelling at. The taxi driver finally overtakes successfully. But at what cost? Crossing a continuous white line could potentially net the taxi driver demerit points. Is it really wise to save that few seconds for demerit points, that can cause a taxi driver his rice bowl? Probably not. We meet angry netizens again. This time, one of them says that it would be better to have his license revoked. Looking at the circumstances, we would be inclined to agree. Yet another angry netizen. But this time he takes the side of the taxi driver, saying that the camcar is road hogging. He even gains the support of 26 other netizens with the number of likes and reacts. Despite the overwhelming support this commenter got, we still believe that the taxi driver's actions was not warranted, especially when it was a in a school zone. In fact not only a school zone, but a school with students with special needs. This just makes the whole situation more dangerous to everyone. So it seems that this case divides opinion. Accidents on expressways are common. When that happens, it is essential to turn on your hazard light and put up the reflective triangle sign to warn other motorists of the accident that is obstructing the road. Otherwise, this may happen: What Happened? The accident above occurred on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE). A white car with a damaged bonnet that was involved in an accident earlier stopped on lane 2 of the expressway. The blur sotong driver of the white car left it without its hazard lights turned on, nor did he put up a reflective triangle sign behind his vehicle to warn other motorists of this obstruction. Instead, he stood on the centre divider helplessly while waiting for assistance to be rendered. Just then, an SMRT taxi, a Toyota Prius travelling in lane 2, failed to notice the stationary vehicle and rear-ended it forcefully. The rear-end impact was so great that the white car's boot burst open. And within seconds, a Toyota Sienta travelling behind the Prius failed to react in time and rear-ended the SMRT taxi. The chain collision caused smoke to be emitted from the vehicles and debris to be flunked around everywhere across the expressway. So this is why ladies and gentlemen, don't be a blur sotong. Always remember to turn on your hazard light and use the reflective triangle sign in such situations. Here's wishing all those involved in the chain collision a speedy recovery! "Zebra crossings give pedestrians the right of way to cross the road ahead of motorists". However, for motorists to give way to pedestrians, they must be visible to motorists. Watch this video to understand what I mean: What Happened? This near-miss incident occurred at a zebra crossing in Boon Lay Way. A kid attempted to "cross" a zebra crossing by sliding across a skateboard while sitting to the other side of the road. In his first attempt to cross the zebra crossing, the cam car spotted him at the very last minute and performed a timely emergency brake. At the same time, the kid saw the oncoming cam car and managed to stop in his tracks. After the cam car passed, the kid made a second attempt to cross the zebra crossing while sitting on the skateboard AGAIN. The second attempt was worse than the first. He paddled while sitting on the skateboard, WITH HIS HEAD DOWN AND LOOKING ON THE GROUND. Fortunately for this kid, all the stars were aligned. He looked up and stopped in his tracks as an oncoming Toyota Prius drove through the zebra crossing. Subsequently, the kid paddled back to the pavement for safety. What's Going On? The real question is, where are the parents/guardian of this kid?! An incident such as this highlights the importance of instilling road safety and awareness in kids. Since young, our parents will constantly remind us time and time again to always check for traffic before attempting to cross the road. Unfortunately, all these bits of advice seem to enter and exit this jogger's ears, without the organ in between his ears retaining any advice. Watch this short clip to find out why: What Happened? The cam car and a Toyota Harrier formed up on the left lane of a two carriageway road. A man clad in a perspiration-soaked Army singlet walks along the pavement from a distance. As he approaches the cam car and Toyota Harrier, the traffic light turns green in both cars' favour. Instead of stopping by the grass patch and checking for oncoming traffic, the man simply hops onto the road and attempts to illegally dash across the road. At this moment, a Toyota Prius drives past the cam car and almost collides with the pedestrian. As a result, the pedestrian performs an "e-brake" to stop himself and does an odd dance-like action. Luckily, the oncoming Toyota Prius also performed an e-brake and avoided colliding with the pedestrian. After this encounter, the pedestrian takes his own sweet time and nonchalantly "jogs" across the road while navigating around several vehicles. Too Shag To Think Logically? Is saving those few minutes spent waiting for the green man so important that it is more important than one's life? Since I love knowing all I can about every vehicle in the fleet I’ve been binging all sorts of Prius videos. One of the ones that I’ve come across is a detailed teardown of a high-mileage 2004 Prius engine that looks good, even after some neglect. A few readers have expressed concerns about picking up a Prius with 90,000 miles and expecting to run it 30,000 miles a year. That kind of driving can be hard on a car. Yet, I’ve seen plenty of second and third-generation Prii driving around in taxi service with more than 300,000 miles and still kicking. If, like me, you wonder what the engine of a high-mileage Prius looks like, YouTuber Speedkar99 tore one down and examined its wear. The engine here is a 1.5-liter 1NZ-FXE inline-four from a second-generation Prius with 303,561 miles. This engine uses a low compression ratio and a high expansion ratio. This works by holding the intake valve open longer for a reverse flow of intake air into the intake manifold, simulating an Atkinson-cycle engine. The result is less power but more efficiency, perfect for a hybrid. The 2ZR-FXE uses a similar system. The Prius the engine was taken out of was a parts vehicle. Our host tears through the engine, giving us a thorough explanation of how everything works. But we’re here to see how this engine has fared over 17 years, and the video certainly delivers. First up is a tour through the positive crankcase ventilation system and even the throttle body, which presents some dirty build-up and could use some good cleaning. Screenshot: Speedkar99 / YouTube (Other) But the valves appear to be clean thanks to the injectors. Next, we take a peek under the timing chain cover, where things look a little discolored. The YouTuber says that this is likely because the car may have not gotten timely oil changes but even then, there isn’t a lot of wear. Screenshot: Speedkar99 / YouTube (Other) Further in the teardown, the YouTuber cracked open the oil pan to reveal a sad sight. Screenshot: Speedkar99 / YouTube (Other) Yep, that’s sludge. They blame the sludge on cheap oil, the cheap oil filter and deferred oil changes. The filter in the oil pump pickup tube appeared to be pretty gunked up and the pistons have some carbon buildup on them. The bigger point of concern for the YouTuber was clogged-up oil control rings on the pistons. Overall, the engine looks pretty good despite some neglect. It’s no wonder why Prii are able to rack up so many miles on their odometers when they appear to be so durable. Still, the sludge build-up is a perfect example of why you should always keep up on your maintenance.>

Speeding Cerato loses control and crashes into Prius causing it to flip over

In this footage uploaded by SG Road Vigilante, a speeding Kia Cerato lost control and collided with a Blue Toyota Prius along CTE (Before Yio Chu Kang Exit). LATEST UPDATE : According to TNP, two men were arrested for suspected drink driving. Meanwhile, the driver of the car that flipped over looked to be in a bad condition. The SCDF said the driver & his passenger were taken to Sengkang General Hospital. Both were conscious. (Source) Here's the video: Here's the unfortunate Prius, driving patiently on a relatively empty CTE: After the Cerato collided, it sent both cars crashing into the railing, and the poor Prius was flipped over. We're not sure why the Cerato lost control, because it's a relatively straight road. We're also not sure how fast the Cerato was going, but it looked like it was speeding. Here's the reaction between the passenger and driver of the cam car: Cam Car Driver: Why are they speeding, for what??? According to Toyota’s own figures, it emits an impressively low 70g/km of CO2 and is capable of 94.1mpg. At 4540mm, the new car is 60mm longer than the Prius Mk3. It is also 15mm wider and 20mm lower, while retaining the same wheelbase of 2700mm, and has a more slippery shape than of old. The now more compact powertrain components in the front of the car have been positioned 10mm lower than before. Toyota claims the new platform helps to lower the centre of gravity and that, allied with a 60% increase in body rigidity and revised front and rear suspension, gives the Prius improved handling response and agility.

Cyclist barely avoids collision with taxi after cutting across the lane!

We all know cyclists should cycle on either the PCN or on the roads. But being on the road can be dangerous for cyclists who don't know how to look out for themselves as we can see in the video posted by SG Road Vigilante on the 28th of October. Shot in the morning by a camera car on Clemenceau Ave, the cyclist could be seen changing lanes to the right without checking for traffic coming up from the right. Unfortunately, a Comfort taxi did really come up on the right at a good speed and just barely managed to avoid knocking him down. That said, the taxi's wing mirror did knock the cyclist off balance, causing him to fall. Do you think cyclists who wish to cycle on the road ought to undergo the Basic Theory Test at a minimum? Here is something slightly more light-hearted as we head into the weekend... It is not often you can end up sitting on top a car after you have been in a crash but this is what happened to this particular Grabfood rider. As can be seen from the video posted by SG Road Vigilante on the 8th of October 2020, a Toyota Prius+ failed to stop at the Stop line of St Patrick's Rd. Inching onto Telok Kurau Rd without checking for traffic, a poor Grabfood rider could not avoid the Prius+ and crashed into it. Again, we must apologise, but to find the rider on top of the car after the crash did bring some smiles to our faces.

A man has been video-ed down by a passerby around Block 409 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3 on the 29th of Sept 2020 brandishing a knife in a carpark. Someway into the video posted by ROADS.sg, we can see that the guy with knife, suddenly slashing himself on his own forearm after shouting at the other guy who was holding a pipe or something similar. Upon seeing the man with the knife slashing himself, the other man dropped his weapon and tried to stop him from causing more hurt. Based on what netizens from various sources wrote, the man who tried to stop the guy with the knife happened to be just a brave passerby. Police are aware of this case and investigations are ongoing. It is unknown how the lady who had blood on her face is related to the case.

When there is a will, there is always a way. This sure rings very true for this particular HDB parking offender as shown in the video posted by SG Road Vigilante. Dated on the 3rd of June, the video is pretty much self-explanatory. While we don't know what prompted the Toyota Prius driver to do that, sharp eyed viewers would have noticed that all that madness was quite unnecessary as the gantry opened up towards the end of the 48 second video. Another day and another careless driver. Today, we have for you guys an accident that happened at the junction of Orchard Road and Buyong Road. As seen from the photo, a SMRT cab has collided with a Nissan truck which in turn has flipped over. We hope those involved in the accident are alright as of press time, though there is currently no news on whether there are any injuries or not. 8e96337c-f950-4b82-a6ef-90577e45cdbc.MP4 From the video, we can understand a bit better what caused the truck to flip over. That said, we have no idea why the taxi slowly crept forward into the junction although the lights did not turn green. We did note that his brake lights weren't on all when he came into frame, suggesting to us that he could have fallen asleep at the wheel, letting the car roll forward into traffic.

Toyota Covers Prius With Solar Panels That Also Charge Battery On The Move Automakers are looking to maximize the driving range of their plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles, and solar panels are the hottest solution right now — literally. Toyota is well aware of that and has announced a plan to begin public road trials from late July 2019 with Prius PHV vehicles equipped with high-efficiency solar batteries. The trials will take place in Japan and benefit from the support of Sharp Corporation and the country’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). As part of the program, Sharp will supply onboard solar battery panels using high-efficiency cells. According to the automaker, the goal is “to assess the effectiveness of improvements in cruising range and fuel efficiency of electrified vehicles equipped with high-efficiency solar batteries.” Toyota installed the Sharp-supplied solar panels on the roof, hood, rear hatch door, and other parts of the Prius PHV to produce a demo car for public road trials. Compared to the Prius PHV that’s already available with a solar charging roof system, the demo car is superior in every respect. At 860 W, the rated power generation output is 4.8 times bigger and the solar battery cell conversion efficiency exceeds 34 percent (versus 22.5 percent). Most importantly, the demo car uses a system that charges the driving battery both while the car is parked and when on the move. This development is expected to lead to “considerable improvements in electric-powered cruising range and fuel efficiency.” More specifically, Toyota claims the experimental vehicle’s daily maximum charge to the battery while the vehicle is parked is equivalent to a driving range of 44.5 km (27.6 miles), compared to the production car’s 6.1 km (3.8 miles). Things get better when the car is moving, as the daily maximum charge and power supply to the driving and auxiliary battery amounts to a driving range of 56.3 km (35 miles). The production Prius PHV’s solar charging system only supplies power on the move to the auxiliary battery, which powers the navigation and other systems. Toyota will conduct the trials under various driving conditions in Toyota City, Tokyo, and other areas in its homeland. The goal is to use resulting data for the development of an onboard solar recharging system. I know some are going to say it look like sh*t (tai gor in dialect), but given that it can provide energy for >50Km per day, I don't mind actually, not only to save my wallet, but our mother earth.

TOKYO: Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday (Sep 5) it planned to recall around 1.03 million vehicles, including its gasoline-hybrid Prius model, in Japan, North America, Europe and other regions due to an issue with the engine wire harness which can pose a fire risk. Following a domestic recall announcement by Japan's transport ministry, Toyota said that in affected vehicles, the wire harness which connects to the hybrid power control unit can come into contact with the covering at the connection point. If dust accumulates on the wire harness or the cover, the insulation on the wires could wear down over time due to vehicle vibrations. This could cause an electrical short circuit, which could generate heat and lead to a risk of fire, Toyota said. The issue affects vehicles produced in Japan between June 2015 and May 2018, and includes the plug-in version of the Prius and the C-HR compact crossover SUV sold in Japan, Europe, Australia and other countries. Roughly half of the recalls would take place in Japan, Toyota spokesman Jean-Yves Jault said. Only the Prius model would be recalled in the United States, where around 192,000 vehicles were affected, he said. Jault added that the issue had led to one incident of a short circuit in Japan, which produced smoke from the vehicle. In Singapore, a total of 4,115 Toyota Prius cars are affected by the recall. Borneo Motors, the authorised distributor for Toyota in Singapore, said it will reach out to Prius customers to check their vehicles, and if necessary, conduct repairs at no cost. Hi, Yesterday I got a chance to sit in Toyota hybrid Prius and im surprise by its spaciousness and the quietness and smoothness of this 3 yr old taxi given that the cab travelled everyday. I need more info of hybrid car and Maintenance especially this model. 1) cost of changing the batteries 2) lifespan of the batteries 3) reliability of this model 4) any other alternative to look out for (preferably with huge boot - hatchback) 5) beside power, what are the pros and cons? 6) any other info to share?

The world's biggest automaker added that the most likely scenario is that the defect could set off a vehicle's warning lights and "probably" cause it to enter "failsafe mode", in which the car can still be driven but with reduced power. "The car may stop while driving, but not suddenly," said a Tokyo-based company spokeswoman. "It would slow down, eventually to stop." Toyota was aware of more than 400 cases of the problem, including 300 in Japan and 90 in North America, she said, adding that no accidents had been reported due to the defect.
