  4. I thought driver will get more stressful when behind the wheel? Why is it the reverse for rats? If rats can be trained to perfect their driving skills, will we have them as grab drivers one day? https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50167812 Learning to drive small cars helps rats feel less stressed, scientists found. Researchers at the University of Richmond in the US taught a group of 17 rats how to drive little plastic cars, in exchange for bits of cereal. Study lead Dr Kelly Lambert said the rats felt more relaxed during the task, a finding that could help with the development of non-pharmaceutical treatments for mental illness. The rats were not required to take a driving test at the end of the study. How did the rats learn to drive? Dr Lambert and her colleagues built a tiny electric car by attaching a clear plastic jar to an aluminium plate, fitted to a set of wheels. To drive the car, a rat would sit on the aluminium plate and touch the copper wire. The circuit was then complete, and the animal could select the direction in which they wanted to travel. After months of training, the rats learned not only how to make the ratmobile move but also how to change direction, researchers wrote in the journal Behavioural Brain Research. What did they find? Some of the rats in the experiment had been raised in a lab, while others lived in "enriched environments" - that is, they had more natural habitats. The rats raised in "enriched environments" were significantly better drivers than the lab rats. After the trials, researchers collected the rats' faeces to test for the stress hormone corticosterone, as well as for dehydroepiandrosterone, an anti-stress hormone. All of the rats had higher levels of dehydroepiandrosterone, which the scientists believe could be linked to the satisfaction of having learned a new skill. Dr Lambert told AFP news agency that the findings could prove useful for future research into treatments for different psychiatric conditions. "There's no cure for schizophrenia or depression, and we need to catch up," she said. "I think we need to look at different animal models and different types of tasks and really respect that behaviour can change our neurochemistry."

  6. These are the shocking images of a gruesome food market where dogs are strangled by rope for food and customers can purchase whole flame-roasted animals. The Tomohon Traditional market in North Sulawesi, Indonesia sells whole monkeys, bats, cats, dogs, pigs, rats, sloths and even giant pythons laid out on tables with painful expressions still etched on their faces. The macabre food stalls were witnessed by Oman-based photographer and blogger, Raymond Walsh, 44, who said it was easier to witness the dead and mutilated animals than it was to see the living dogs in cages awaiting their fate. Mr Walsh said: 'It was typical of a lot of local markets in the developing world - lots of fruit, vegetables and fish. The only difference was the sheer number of dead animals for sale.' On his blog www.manonthelam.com, he describes the harrowing sight of dogs in cages with their dead counterparts lying on a table nearby. 'It was easier to stomach the entrails of monkeys, rats on a stick and decapitated pigs than it was to see those live dogs awaiting their fate,' he said. 'The other animals seem foreign but I have friends who have dogs.' Although the market's dead dogs may be difficult for westerners to look at, Mr Walsh points to the different cultures and attitudes towards the animals in South East Asia. 'Put simply, Westerners see dogs solely as pets. Indonesians see them as both pets and as sources of meat - it's just how we're raised,' he said. In the photographs, many of the animals are stiff and completely black with a haunting pained expressions on their faces. 'After they are killed the animals are roasted over a fire, so the fur burns off, the skin tightens and peels back, causing that 'screaming' look,' Mr Walsh explained. 'How they are killed depends on the animal. Cats, monkeys, and sloths are shot. Bats and rats have their heads clobbered against a tree or table. Pigs are stabbed with a sharp piece of wood or metal,' he added. 'Wild boars are killed as they as they are trapped. Snakes are slashed with a knife or have their heads cut off. Dogs are strangled with a rope,' Mr Walsh went on. When asked to describe the smell, Mr Walsh said: 'In a word, appalling. There's something about the air that changes when there's that much death around.' 'It hangs heavy and it made me queasy and light-headed at the same time... It's the first time I'd ever encountered anything like it,' he added. 7. 废话!!! More people take bus of course buses move slower lah. If not what, bus drivers paiseh or more courteous because of courtesy compaign so drive slower??? Need a $770k MOS to tell us that??? What I fear is that she is pretty happy with her observation highlighted in red & then MOT/LTA may implement more measures to accommodate these buses. That will definitely be at the expense of other road users... Geeeez, can they tackle the problem of overcrowding during to their flood gate policy first before having more restrictive measures for all other road users? The kind of money we pay these folks...really flush down the drain. From CNA: Buses move slower as daily ridership increases Posted: 17 January 2012 1659 hrs
