A suggestion in Parliament this week by Bukit Batok MP Murali Pillai to turn vacant school sites into retirement villages is being studied by the authorities. National Development Minister Lawrence Wong said of such projects in a written reply: "Their location within established housing estates will enable residents to age in residential surroundings. "Their relatively large site area can accommodate a significant number of housing units and common spaces, allowing residents to interact with one another and develop a sense of community. "However, there are also costs involved to rejuvenate the ageing vacant school properties and reconfigure them for housing purposes." Mr Murali told The Straits Times that cost savings are the main reason behind the idea, saying that when developers build retirement homes, the higher capital expenditure is passed on to seniors. "This option of ageing graciously in-situ with fellow seniors would be an attractive option," he added. MacPherson MP Tin Pei Ling said the idea allows facilities and services to be located together, bringing convenience to the elderly and using resources effectively. But she added: "The design also has to consider: How do we ensure the elderly are not living in an isolated sub-community and are integrated into the wider community?" Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC MP Saktiandi Supaat, a member of the Government Parliamentary Committee for National Development, said the proposal could help to maximise space, but added that there are other needs of residents and the dynamics of the area for constituencies to be considered too. Veteran real estate consultant and academic Steven Choo agreed that savings would be passed on to buyers if the means of sale or lease are arranged by the Government. "I am excited about this idea," said Dr Choo, who studied retirement housing solutions in Hong Kong and Japan as a developer. "Retrofitting of a school compound for residential use is very doable." He said he has not seen such a project in Singapore, and it would be great to have a successful demonstration project. Dr Choo's office in Kim Yam Road is located in commercial building The Herencia, which used to be Nan Chiau High School. He enjoys its high ceilings. Some residents were also receptive to having such retirement villages in their backyards. Retired accountant Agnes Mak, 67, who lives next to the empty Bishan Park Secondary School vacated earlier this year, said: "I wouldn't object to it because the elderly can mingle with residents in the neighbourhood, which is good." Financial planner Tan Wen Man, 28, who lives next to the empty Bedok North Secondary, also vacated earlier this year, said: "I won't mind because the elderly are not noisy and quite friendly. If it is a primary school, it will be noisier." According to a Straits Times report in February last year, due to falling enrolment and mergers, there were 11 schools vacated in 2016 and last year, with four more to be vacated this year. At least nine other former school sites managed by the Singapore Land Authority are vacant state properties. The Academy of Singapore Teachers, the Singapore Red Cross and the Enabling Village are located in former school compounds. The Government is looking for ways to house the elderly as the population ages. The first Housing Board "retirement kampung", Kampung Admiralty, which has healthcare and wellness facilities for seniors, was opened officially in May.

Teachers may soon have to pay to park in schools. The Straits Times understands that the Ministry of Education (MOE) is looking into whether public schools should continue to not charge staff for parking space in school compounds. Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao had reported on Thursday that the ministry has been discussing the issue since the start of last year. Currently, all public service organisations, including the Education Ministry, charge parking fees at their offices. But parking remains free at the primary and secondary schools and the junior colleges. Only school staff are allowed to park in schools. Last year, the Auditor-General Office's (AGO) report highlighted how the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), the Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and the Temasek Polytechnic (TP) were not imposing parking charges, or charging below market rate, for the use of their car parks. The report said such practices "are tantamount to providing hidden subsidies for vehicle parking". The report pointed out that ITE did not charge users for its car park, and the estimated amount of parking fees forgone was $66,000 a month. According to the report, SP implemented paid parking only in May 2013, but parking continued to be free for motorcycles. Parking was also free for those who parked their vehicles at the staff apartment car park. Of those who were charged for parking, some users, such as the poly's staff, tenants, and contractors, paid below the market rate. At TP, which started charging for parking in June 2014, it capped its daily car park charges at $1.50 for staff, and $6.00 for other users, resulting in some users paying below market rate, the report went on. Am I reading it right? 61 schools, including Raffles Institution and Hwa Chong Institution, to get new principals Raffles Institution (RI) will be headed by Mr Frederick Yeo, who is currently principal of Crest Secondary School. Crest Secondary School is the first Specialised School for Normal Technical students in Singapore. Read this today in The New Paper (someone posted a link earlier but it was hidden amongst other things.) Thought that this is important reading for all the parents here ---------------- She is still coming to terms with the devastating death of her teenage granddaughter, who committed suicide over scoring two Bs in her O levels. Then, three months after the 16-year-old plunged to her death, Madam Ng Siang Mui's grief-stricken and guilt-ridden daughter, who was the teen's mother, also killed herself. The tragic double deaths has left her son-in-law, who is the teen's father, mentally unstable. Fortunately, more children and teenagers have been seeking help for suicidal thoughts, said the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS). In an interview with The New Paper, Madam Ng, 71, shared the devastation and anguish of the triple tragedy that began in January this year. She was reluctant to speak at first, noting that the death had torn the family apart. Madam Ng initially said: "Talking to you now is useless. My daughter is dead. My granddaughter is dead." She changed her mind later because she hoped that sharing their story could help highlight early intervention and save more lives. Madam Ng said that in January, just three hours after getting her results slip, her granddaughter jumped to her death. Except for two Bs - in English and Mathematics - the student had scored distinctions for her other subjects. The only child left a note for her parents: "Mum, I am sorry for being a disappointment. I should have done better. "Dad, I am sorry you will not have the chance to walk me down the (church) aisle to give me away." The child's parents used to fight over their daughter's education. The girl had been a straight-As student who attended a top school. The mum wanted to push her to excel and her dad felt that the child should be left alone. "My Xiao Mei (her granddaughter's nickname) was always affected whenever her parents fought over her studies," Madam Ng said in Khek. At Madam Ng's request, we are not naming the parents or their child. Madam Ng said: "My son-in-law felt very sorry for his daughter. He used to approach me to help him talk to my daughter, to ask her not to push Xiao Mei too hard. He felt that they should let Xiao Mei be, as she was a good girl. "Whenever I tried to broach the issue with my daughter, she'd get angry and tell me not to interfere with the way she wanted to bring her child up. "She often compared Xiao Mei's results with those of her friends' children and would ask, 'How come so and so can do this and you cannot?'" Xiao Mei's mother wanted her to get into medical school. A family friend, Mrs Lynn Wee, 45, a housewife, spoke of how she and three other close friends had tried to keep watch over Xiao Mei's mother after the funeral. Mrs Wee said: "She maintained a stoic front and even admitted that she would have been disappointed with her child's academic performance." But that facade slowly slipped in the weeks that followed, said Madam Ng, who has three grandsons from two other children. Madam Ng said that a month after Xiao Mei's death, her father moved out. "That broke my daughter's heart. I think it was then that she, too, gave up living. "When Xiao Mei died, I didn't just lose one child. Her mother, my own daughter, killed herself three months later." Madam Ng recalled the conversation she had with her daughter a day before she killed herself. "She told me, 'Ma, I shouldn't have pressurised Xiao Mei in her studies. You didn't do that to us when we were young and we all turned out fine'." The New Paper understands that Xiao Mei's father is seeking psychiatric help. Added Madam Ng: "If only we had noticed or realised that Xiao Mei was suffering, we could have asked for professional help and this tragedy would have been prevented." Noted that some schools like Catholic High for example do not have long pants for upper levels. Is there any reason for this as it seems they are the odd ones out.

The six schools rank among the top in the Singapore education scene, comprising the Raffles secondary schools and its junior college, Hwa Chong Institution, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and NUS High School of Mathematics and Science. They all run both the Integrated Programme (IP) and Gifted Education Programme (GEP). The IP provides a seamless secondary and junior college education with students bypassing the O levels. The GEP caters to students in the top 1 to 2 per cent of their cohort.

If only the poor people who got ripped off could claw back some of their monies. ----- Jul 7, 2011 Over 600 private schools have closed Stringent regulations lead to industry shakeup, but student numbers are up By Leow Si Wan THE number of private schools here is about a third of what it once was, following an industry shake-up triggered by more stringent quality standards required by the Private Education Act. Only 328 schools remain, down from the estimated 1,000 in December 2009. Student enrolment, however, has gone up, as the more established schools have expanded over the last couple of years. Private-school enrolment stood at 120,000 before December 2009 and 146,000 as at last month. These updates came from the Council for Private Education (CPE), set up nearly two years ago to clean up the private education sector, which had been hit by a spate of sudden closures of schools. Students were stranded midway through their studies, with thousands of dollars in fees locked up with the schools. Private schools have been given the last 18 months - until last month - to shape up in order to be registered to operate under the more demanding requirements. The 328 schools now still running are those which made the cut by, for example, having independent examination boards, transparent finances and adequately qualified teachers.

Cricket and football will be the first two sports targeted. The programme was launched at an open field at Compassvale, in the company of five Members of Parliament from the area - Teo Ser Luck, Michael Palmer, Dr Janil Puthucheary, Zainal Sapari and Gan Thiam Poh. All tried their hands at cricket, which will make use of the fund by organising coaching clinics for neighbourhood schools. The sport has a considerable following in the area, with the two-year-old Sengkang Cricket league growing in popularity. The competition currently features 12 teams and a base of around 150 players. Yesterday, Teo, the Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and Mayor of North East CDC, said: "Sports is one way to bond our community, and to me it is one of the most effective activities to integrate our citizens together, new or local citizens." Previously the Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Teo revealed he would maintain his links with the sporting world. "Currently, I will still be leading some of the committees that I have been chairing, like the Olympic Pathway Programme, Youth Sports Development and some of the other smaller projects that I have been doing with sports," he said. "While I can always extend my help when it is needed, I think renewal and succession planning is always good for injecting new ideas and new energy into all these projects nationally."

Hi guys. Have some free time before army and im thinking of doing something fun before enlisting. Thot of a racing school. So far found Singha racing school in Thailand. Not sure if they teach lessons in english though. Tried sending them an email but to no avail. Another alternative is the Porsche Driving school in Aussie. Wondering if any bros have been to such lessons, hows the experience like? and also if there are any schools to recommend? Thanks guys.
