Every year, American publication, Consumer Reports conducts a reliability survey from its subscribers' experience with 1.2 million vehicles over the last three years. In this year's report, the biggest surprise is Ford's free fall from inside the top 10 in 2010 to 27th of the 28 brands rated. Only two years ago, Consumer Reports had hailed Ford as a "poster child" of reliability. According to Consumer Reports director of automotive testing Jake Fisher, consumers encountered a lot of problems with Ford's Powershift Dual-clutch transmission and 'MyFord' Touch infotainment system. These systems were introduced to a number of new or revised models such as the Fiesta, Focus and Explorer. On the report, Ford commented that the results matched the internal data the company had received and added that the company had made major improvement earlier this year, and that the survey lagged behind current trends. As usual, Japanese brands dominated the top positions in the survey. Toyota took the top three places with its Scion, Toyota and Lexus brands, followed by Mazda, Subaru, Honda and Acura. From a personal experience, my family's previous Japanese cars have been to the workshop lesser than the current VW during the first three years of ownership. Audi deserves a pat on the back for moving up to 8th in ranking, a huge improvement from the 26th position in 2011.
  3. Just recently, Subaru revealed the Subaru BRZ STI at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. The car is said to be available for sale soon. And soon after that, the company announced that there are plans to release a turbocharged version of the car. While Toyota has released a TRD version of the 86 before this, the car only received aftermarket cosmetic parts such as a bodykit, suspension system and some TRD badges. Many were expecting a turbocharger or supercharger to be included as well. Just days after images of a Subaru BRZ wearing a huge GT wing and a STI bodykit was spotted at the Nurburgring, Toyota's in-house tuning division, TRD, has announced that they are looking into upgrades for the Scion FR-S (Toyota 86 in other markets). During the recent SEMA auto show, Scion showcased three modified examples of the Scion FR-S and a couple of them were supercharged. And it was at the same show where TRD representatives stated that they are considering a supercharger kit for the Scion FR-S. Toyota has previously offered supercharger kits for their sports or performance cars and even some of their trucks. And it comes as no surprise that a supercharger kit will be available for the Scion FR-S. The idea of a supercharger kit for the car is still very much in the planning stage and obviously no power figures were given. One of the advantages of having a TRD supercharger kit is that it offers a full factory warranty by the company and other aftermarket offerings do not often offer that. Since the Scion FR-S (including the Toyota 86) and the Subaru BRZ are practically identical, the supercharger kit should be able to be used for all three cars. Image credit: Net Car Show

  5. "Cars from Toyota look boring." I am not surprised if you have heard something like this before as I have heard it many times. When Toyota stopped offering several sporty looking models roughly ten years ago, many people have mentioned that the Japanese automaker's cars after that look a little dull. "The company wants to improve its car design into its future models. Toyota already has good reliability in manufacturing cars but their design has been rather weak. Our cars are frequently characterised as 'appliances' and the automaker wants to turn that around," explained Kevin Hunter, President of Toyota's CALTY Design Studio. Hunter further explained that they will act more instinctively by listening to what consumers want but not only by listening to what they want as consumers do not know what they want in five years time. The company has to make some predictions on how the designs will be like. It was the sleek, aggressive and good looking Scion FR-S (Scion

  7. The jointly developed new sports coupe (86, FR-S and BRZ) from Toyota and Subaru has yet to arrive in the showrooms around the world. But some tuners have made specially designed units of the abovementioned cars. And the car you see above is just one example of it. Scion unveiled this specially made car at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show and it is named as the Scion Racing Greddy FR-S race car. This car was built by team crews from Scion Racing and Greddy. Greddy is a performance parts company that has worked with Toyota previously and has been involved in racing for over twenty years. The car has been tuned to produce 600bhp. It will be used in the 2012 US Formula Drift season and it will be driven by professional drift race car driver, Ken Gushi. Toyota did not reveal much about the car except that it has been lowered, stripped-out and fitted with a huge GT wing spoiler and racing bodykit. Surprisingly, the exhaust appears to be missing from the car and some believed that it is still under development. It is also known that Greddy is developing a custom road legal exhaust system for the road going sports coupe. In other news, Toyota will start selling the 86 and FR-S by spring of 2012 and it will be the first car to offer a connected infotainment audio system called BeSpoke, powered by Pioneer's Zypr. Toyota is organising a program known as the First 86. This program will pick eighty-six lucky people to be the first owners of the FR-S. They will receive the cars even before the model goes on sale to the general public. Photo credit: GT Spirit

  13. Scion stages world premiere of all-new tC sports coupe at 2004 North American International Auto Show Scion has issued the following press release: Scion, the new car marque from Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the all-new tC sports coupe at a press conference yesterday at the 2004 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. In June, the all-new 2005 tC will join the entry-level xA and the urban utility xB, coinciding with Scion's national rollout," said Jim Farley, Scion vice president. "The tC was developed specifically for Scion and the U.S. market with an aim to deliver a level of style, performance and value that will be flat-out impossible to beat." The design target for the tC was to offer a sporty coupe with sophisticated styling and surprising versatility. The sleek tC sits low and wide. Configured as a three-door hatch with a panorama glass moonroof, the tC has the formal look of a coupe with a trunk. Body panel gaps have been narrowed, as have the pillars, for improved visibility. Further adding to the tC's sleek appearance, the windshield wipers are set low so the driver has an unobstructed view. Outside mirrors have built-in turn signal lights, and the hatch incorporates a power release. Standard keyless entry and remote hatch operation can all be managed from a newly designed gray and black key, unique to Scion. The tC's sophisticated styling exudes a Scion family identity. Traces of Scion DNA can be found in the interior with use of amber illumination, metal-tone trim and innovative instrumentation panel grains. A material that was inspired by the texture of Japanese paper was developed for the tC dash. Exterior Scion cues include taut, clean lines from front to rear, accentuated rocker panels and wheel arches, and a sporty mesh grille. Like its Scion siblings, the tC will be equipped with many subtle hints of refinement, such as the use of dampers on interior moving parts, normally found in more upscale vehicles. The temperature control dial is made of genuine cast aluminum. The front-passenger airbag is seamlessly integrated into the dash, and narrowed gaps on interior components measure near those of the all-new Camry Solara coupe. The tC will offer incredible utility in a very spacious cabin. The driver's seat will have both a height and thigh adjustment, along with a walk-in function with memory. Rear 60/40-split seats will be equipped with three headrests and three-point seat belts in all seating positions. The rear seats will recline 45 degrees and can be adjusted into 10 different positions. Finally, when both the front passenger and rear seats are folded flat, tC will provide more than 8.5 feet of length for cargo. Performance will match the tC's sleek styling. The tC will be a tenacious road handler as it will be equipped with a double-wishbone rear suspension, front MacPherson struts, 17-inch six-spoke alloy wheels, and four-wheel disc brakes with an Anti-lock Brakes system. Power will be delivered through an all-aluminum 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) that will produce 160 horsepower. The engine will be mated with a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions. For added performance, a dealer-installed supercharger package developed by Toyota Racing Development will be offered later in the year. The turn-key performance option with an output of approximately 200 horsepower can be purchased with the vehicle, or added later. And like all things Scion, it will be surprisingly affordable. Like the xA and xB, the Scion tC will be offered in mono-spec trim. Standard features will include the panorama moonroof, 17-inch alloy wheels with graphite appearance finish, air conditioning, cruise control, a high-output Pioneer sound system, power windows, door locks and mirrors, and a center console with armrest. Sound absorption materials help maintain low NVH levels that are more common in a class-above car. "When Scion goes on sale nationally in late June, Scion showrooms are expected in approximately 60 percent of all Toyota dealers," said Farley. "The launch of the 2005 tC sport coupe will complete the third leg of Scion's original three-vehicle strategic launch plan. But, it will not be the last."
