Body parts were scattered across the street after the bomb went off outside the Erawan Shrine in the downtown Chidlom district of the Thai capital. "I can confirm it was a bomb, we can't tell which kind yet, we are checking," national police spokesman Lietenant General Prawut Thavornsiri told AFP. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/thailand/11807583/Explosion-rocks-Bangkok-close-to-Erawan-shrine-with-reports-of-casualties-live.html Update: A bomb blast in a busy tourist area of Bangkok has left 12 dead, injuring at least 20. The blast took place just after 7pm local time, with emergency services racing to the scene. Images shared on social media have shown destruction of the surrounding area, and bodies lying dead in the street. The explosion, in the Rachaprasong intersection of central Bangkok, was confirmed by local police to be set off by a bomb. Eyewitnesses say that bodies in the streets are being covered with white sheets as police investigate the area.
  3. SINGAPORE: Two 11-year-old boys, believed to be classmates, have been missing since Thursday (Jan 18) afternoon. The police are appealing for information on the whereabouts of Javier Teo Ren Jie and Axel Lim Jun Wei. The police said Javier was last seen at Blk 273D Compassvale Link at about 7.10am on Thursday, while Axel was last seen at a shopping mall along Rivervale Drive at about 7.30pm on Thursday. Facebook user Leftone Shady - who referred to Javier as "our son" in a post she put up on Thursday afternoon - said that Javier was last seen at Park Green condominium with his classmate, Axel. She added in an update that both Javier and Axel went to "play Buddy cards at Rivervale Plaza and may have been last seen there". It is unclear how she is related to Javier. She referred to Javier as "our son" in the Facebook post, but also stated that she is not his biological mother. The post, which was shared more than 6,000 times by Friday afternoon, has since been deleted. 5. Watched plenty of war movies, most famous of course was Black Hawk Down, with the ubiquitous Humvee (actual abbreviation is HMMWV for High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) seen all over the battlefield as the basic utility jeep for the US forces and then I saw this at a car park: Sua ku never seen this HUMMER H3 before but know that it was made by the same company that churns out the Humvees. From One Motoring website, read that this is a 3.653L monster jeep with a maximum laden weight of 2660 kg and unladen weight of 2231 kg. A petrol guzzler yes? Wonder what is its present OMV...

Said the Stomper: "LTA officers went up to a HDB multistorey carpark in Toa Payoh to check a Lotus car for illegal exhaust modifications." 12. http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/archive/th...regions-highest Published June 28, 2012 Income inequality here seen as one of the region's highest 9 in 10 polled can't tell which income bracket they're in By lim wei sheng IT'S a head-scratching paradox. While Singaporeans perceive income inequality levels here as being one of the highest in the region, nine out of 10 don't even know which income bracket they belong to. According to a March 2012 survey of 10 Asia-Pacific cities by Fidelity Worldwide Investment, of the 90 per cent of Singaporeans who do not know which income bracket their household belongs to, 68 per cent underestimate and 22 per cent overestimate it. This leads to the poorest households in the first decile perceiving themselves as situated in the third decile, while those in the wealthiest 10th decile locate themselves within the more modest sixth decile. These misperceptions have implications for investment decisions, according to Betty Ng, director of investment communications, Asia Pacific at Fidelity. She said that overestimation can lead to overspending, while underestimation may cause investors to lose returns due to excessive risk-aversion or risk-taking. Income inequality fears remain very much alive, though. Based on responses by the 507 Singaporeans surveyed, a typical household needs to earn an average of $2,662 in monthly pre-tax income to be qualified as low-income, and earn an average of $12,140 to be qualified as high-income. The difference between what constitutes low and high income is the widest for respondents in Singapore, suggesting that respondents here perceive the greatest inequality in their current incomes. Three in four Singaporeans are also expecting widening spreads in income levels over the next 10 years, comparable to the regional average of 76 per cent. Only 42 per cent of Singaporeans believe that their household income would improve in the future, compared to 49 per cent for all 10 cities. Nevertheless, Singaporeans foresee a more optimistic future for their children, with 91 per cent of respondents believing that their children would attain middle or high income status when they reach their 40s. Indeed, 35 per cent of self-classified low-income respondents predicted that their children would attain high income status, while this proportion was 67 per cent for self-classified high-income respondents. Based on data from the Department of Statistics, average monthly household income in 2011 stood at $9,618, with income in the fifth decile standing at $7,032 while income in the 10th decile reached $27,867.

  16. MCFers are definitely not the average car buyers as here all buy cars with cash. MORE and more premium-brand customers are taking vehicle loans as car prices rise but there does not appear to be much change among buyers of mass-market makes, say some motor distributors. They refuse to be named or give details, citing confidentiality, but say their numbers prove it. "We have seen more buyers taking financing over the last three to six months," said the general manager of a small high-end make. He added that the average loan quantum taken is 80 per cent of the car price, or $120,000 to $130,000, to be repaid over eight to nine years. "Traditionally, the loan quantum goes up with the car price for our brand, that is to say, the average loan quantum was about $10,000 lower three months ago," he explained. For a loan of $100,000 repayable over 10 years, the rough guide is that a $10,000 increase in loan quantum translates into an extra $100 in monthly instalments. "It's not that painful when it is spread out over 10 years as it only costs slightly more each month," he explained. "Most Singaporeans are not getting richer, so they have to survive by taking bigger loans." But the sales manager of a mass-market make says that the hire-purchase situation over the past half year has not changed for his so-called bread-and-butter models, the majority of which have 1,600 cc engines or smaller. "Most of them are still applying for 100 per cent loans over 10 years," he says. Over at a big luxury brand, however, a senior manager said that his company's "loan penetration rate" has climbed in the last three months. "Our average quantum has gone up by about $20K to $180,000 in the last quarter," he revealed. "And the number of people requiring vehicle financing has increased by 3 or 4 per cent." Today, about eight out of 10 customers take a car loan. A manager at a sports car dealership also affirms the rising trend for financing but offers a different view of things. "It is true that in the last three to six months, our loan business has increased by 15 to 20 per cent," he says. "One year ago, about 30 to 40 per cent of my customers took up a loan. Now, it's 50 to 60 per cent." But he says the real reason is not the increase in car prices. "A $20,000 to $30,000 difference in COE premium is not significant for my customer profile," he said, pointing to his line-up of models, which range from about $300,000 to $800,000, including COE. "Rather, it is because the cost of borrowing is at an all-time low of 1.88 per cent." According to him, the interest rate a couple of years ago used to be 2.5 per cent or higher. As for the increase in loan quantum, he said that bank promotions with attractive rebates have been instrumental in getting more of his customers to sign up for financing. "They probably want to keep more cash for investments," he added.
  17. A half-naked woman was seen chasing four men in the early hours of yesterday morning in Clarke Quay. Shin Min Daily reported that a photo of the woman was taken by a surprised 16-year-old showing the woman naked from waist down. The woman, who looked like she was in her 20s, was reported to have the clothing on her upper body torn off and her lower body was completely naked. The report in the Chinese evening daily said she was holding her pants and underwear. Witnesses told Shin Min that there were not many people around at the time of 5.25am as she chased the four men, ignoring by-standers. Her friends were also running after her. When the woman reached the men, they became violent towards her by pushing her to the ground and kicking and punching her, according to witnesses. She fought back and tried to stand up, using her hands to block her face. Only when witnesses shouted that the police were coming was when they stopped. Police arrived on the scene and arrested the four men who are currently helping police with investigations. Three of the men are reported to be in their 20s while one man is in his 30s. The woman was also reported to have been seen entering a convenience store to buy a drink, while half-naked, earlier. She is described to have long hair and to have worn a dark-coloured top.
