TL;DR – A Subaru Legacy recklessly speeds through morning traffic and weaves through tight pockets of space between cars. Ends up side swiping a Toyota Wish causing a jam on the PIE during morning rush hour. It’s 8am and you’re on the way to work. The morning traffic is not too bad and you look like you’ll make it to the office with little to no hiccups. But, life is funny and loves to throw you a curve ball every now and then. In this case, it’s in the form of a Subaru Legacy with a driver that has shit for brains. Watch the viral video here: Crazy driver This minute and a half (ish) video starts by throwing us straight into the action. A Subaru Legacy with a roof pod comes charging in from the left side of the cam car and can be seen aggressively switching lanes. It then hits a car, loses control and comes to a halt at lane 1. Is there a profile for roof pods? I don’t know about you readers but most of my friends who are considering to install roof pods or already have roof pods installed are married men with kids. Roof pods can give your car an additional 300 to 600 litres of cargo space - Which is space you’ll need especially if you have children. And as you can see from a quick search on Google, some of them don’t come cheap. Really hope the driver’s children were not in the car though. I’m pretty sure it was more than the Wish but the video footage of impact is quite blur and it happened really quickly. The whole island was hit with a heavy rainstorm yesterday, with some experiencing more than just a heavy downpour. From this minute-long video, it seems that a Ferrari 458 was caught speeding down East Coast Road in 'not-safe-for-speeding' weather. The driver subsequently loses control of the vehicle as he attempts to accelerate, swerving left and right across three lanes before hitting an SBS bus and losing its rear bumper. Ouch! How much have you spent on modifying your car? Hundreds of dollars? A few grand? Or tens of thousands? Car modification enthusiasts all over would hardly bat an eyelid while splashing cold hard cash on modifications for their beloved rides. Now the list of modifications (both legal and not so legal) to bump up a car's dyno figures is endless. But let's forget the heady chase for bhp for the moment and let me proffer my suggestion for the very first modification every car enthusiast should undertake. Weight-loss. No, not for the car; but for the biological lump behind the wheel - you aka the driver! Now before you click the back button, hear me out. It is a widely acknowledged fact that Singaporeans are increasingly becoming obese. And this has an effect on your car's performance. Think about it. It is already trite that weight reduction can help a car's performance. Car enthusiasts would splash thousands of dollars on aftermarket forged rims. Other than potentially improving handling, one benefit of such rims is a reduction in overall car weight. But just how much weight would one save? I did some research for my ride and I would save roughly 2kg to 3kg per rim depending on the one I select. That translates into a total weight saving of 8kg to 12kg. 8kg? I lost that amount of weight just by regularly exercising over the course of last year! Best part is, this weight loss came at no additional cost to me! Now translate that logic into the amount of dollars into other weight saving modifications such as replacing parts of the body work with lightened ones and you can see where I am going with this. Of course, I am not dissing the utility of weight saving modifications. After all, there has got to be a limit to the amount of weight a person can reasonably lose. What I am advocating is: before decreasing the car weight, lose some weight first! It is a free mod! On the flip side, you could see what would happen if you splashed out moolah for those shiny light weight rims and spanking CF hood and hit the buffet table one time too many! All that cash would be wasted! So here is one more reason for you to watch that weighing scale this festive season!

Us Singaporeans are a car crazy bunch. Buying a car in Singapore is an expensive proposition. Driving a car too. And with the COE cuts translating into sky high (by recent years' standard) COE prices, car prices have rocketed further upwards. But still we Singaporeans can't stay away from our cars. If we could afford it, we would almost certainly buy it. A quick and unscientific survey of the multi-storey carpark in my estate reveals that the recent increase in COE has not dampened the car buying and upgrading spirit of the Singaporean heartlander. Competition for car park lots is intensifying and returning home after 9.30pm now means parking at the top few storeys. A quick glance around the car park reveals quite a few spanking new cars with spanking new plates indicating a very recent registration date. And the car mix is shifting away from bread and butter cars as more upmarket brands start making their presence felt. And, mind you, I stay in a less desirable (read poorer) part of our sunny island. I myself am equally guilty. The high COE prices have not put an end to my plans to buy a new car to replace the one I sold off recently. It has merely made me adjust my expectations and forced me to look harder now that the cars I originally planned to buy are out of my reach. I have also decided to save a bit more to increase my budget. But it doesn't cross my mind for a second to abandon my car buying plans. Even though I could never drive to work (CBD). Even though I can use the family car on most weekends. There is no doubt I am car crazy. So what drives us Singaporeans car crazy? Many of us have our own theories. But speaking for myself, my car is something of a passion or a hobby. I enjoy owning and driving cars. It makes me tick and motivates me to crawl out of bed in the morning to head to work.
