  1. Hi, I was looking at my G-plate commercial vehicle insurance terms and conditions. Realized that "geographical area" includes West Malaysia and 80 km into Thailand ! So I am planning to drive G-plate into Malaysia without getting the relevant permits from Malaysia side. I wish to know: How is the ban on Singapore commercial vehicles enforced? Is it aggressively enforced, or just another close-one-eye type of regulation? Exactly where do they do they conduct checks?

  6. 20-30 years ago, tertiary students tend to choose engineering as their main course of study. it was prestigious to be "Engineer". 20 years later, it seems students prefer banking, finance, sociology and arts subjects. as a result, this might lead to singapore importing more foreign talents because there might not be enough qualified engineers or technical experts in singapore due to student's preference for arts subject these days. practically speaking, I could earn $5000 as a finance grad, work from 8-5 in a cosy office, staring at charts; while engineering grad may have to sit in office for 14-16 hours a day and earn less than a finance grad, not forgetting the stress an engineer goes through. what do you think?
  7. The dreaded R word. We avoid....u believe???? [:p] Singapore's Q3 GDP grows by 1.3% on-year Singapore's economy grew by 1.3 per cent on a year-on-year basis in the third quarter of 2012, compared to a 2.3 per cent growth in the previous quarter. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the economy contracted by 1.5 per cent, a reversal from a growth of 0.2 per cent in the second quarter. Releasing the advance GDP estimates for the third quarter on Friday, the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said the Singapore economy remains on track to grow by 1.5 to 2.5 per cent in 2012. It said economic growth in the second quarter was better than expected, resulting in an upward revision of quarter-on-quarter annualised growth from the preliminary estimates of -0.7 per cent to 0.2 per cent. Commenting on the various sectors, MTI said the pullback in quarter-on-quarter growth momentum in the third quarter was mainly due to contraction in the manufacturing sector. The sector declined by an annualised rate of 3.9 per cent, following the 0.1 per cent contraction in the preceding quarter. This largely reflected the decline in output of the electronics cluster. On a year-on-year basis, the manufacturing sector grew by 0.7 per cent compared to the 4.6 per cent increase in the preceding quarter. The construction sector grew by 8.6 per cent on a year-on-year basis in the third quarter, moderating from 10.1 per cent in the previous quarter. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the sector contracted by an annualised rate of 7.5 per cent due to a decline in private sector building activities. Services producing industries rose by 1.1 per cent on a year-on-year basis, following the 0.9 per cent growth in the previous quarter. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the services producing industries grew by an annualised rate of 0.1 per cent, compared to the 0.4 per cent decline in the preceding quarter. MTI cautioned that growth could be weighed down by the subdued global economic conditions for the rest of the year. Externally-oriented sectors such as manufacturing and wholesale trade will be affected by the slowdown in advanced economies. However, it said there will be modest support to growth from healthy expansion in the transport engineering cluster and construction sector. - CNA/de

  10. DRIFTING http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6rsa7v_sss...feature=related RACING CARS For home-made track, the cars' speeds got to be set lower coz the track is much shorter/narrower. You see, i am a fan of remote control racing on and off in the past.... tried different 'cars' and engines (gas/electric). Most of my 'cars' COE expired liao... but unlike real cars, new ones are still affordable (especially the MiniZs i am eyeing now). This type is small but realistic (controls/steering and even bodyshapes.... its 1:27 scale, palm size, but the body details are almost as good as the die-cast display type) The shops have their indoor tracks, about $5 you can race the whole day!! But i have this sudden urge to build a 'portable/foldable' track at home and use a design i like (mimicking our F1 street circuit or Sepang etc). My living+dining space is not very big, but good enough if i put a few tables/seats i have to the side and may even run the track over them.... Spent today's morning using masking tapes to mark out the layout, so far so good. But I am not sure what type of carpet or textured/friction paint to use on the track made of plywood boards modules?? Any bros have some suggestions on the whole project, especially the choice of carpet / paints to give the tyres max grips? I know this is quite a niche project, but it will be my Xmas/NY project (i will pass the bills to my wife, she no need to buy me present, just pay) btw, I am eyeing a Lambor or Ferrari as my race car..... will go 'showroom' soon. thank you in advance... (i m also checking with MiniZ forums)

    Best Mod Ever?

How much have you spent on modifying your car? Hundreds of dollars? A few grand? Or tens of thousands? Car modification enthusiasts all over would hardly bat an eyelid while splashing cold hard cash on modifications for their beloved rides. Now the list of modifications (both legal and not so legal) to bump up a car's dyno figures is endless. But let's forget the heady chase for bhp for the moment and let me proffer my suggestion for the very first modification every car enthusiast should undertake. Weight-loss. No, not for the car; but for the biological lump behind the wheel - you aka the driver! Now before you click the back button, hear me out. It is a widely acknowledged fact that Singaporeans are increasingly becoming obese. And this has an effect on your car's performance. Think about it. It is already trite that weight reduction can help a car's performance. Car enthusiasts would splash thousands of dollars on aftermarket forged rims. Other than potentially improving handling, one benefit of such rims is a reduction in overall car weight. But just how much weight would one save? I did some research for my ride and I would save roughly 2kg to 3kg per rim depending on the one I select. That translates into a total weight saving of 8kg to 12kg. 8kg? I lost that amount of weight just by regularly exercising over the course of last year! Best part is, this weight loss came at no additional cost to me! Now translate that logic into the amount of dollars into other weight saving modifications such as replacing parts of the body work with lightened ones and you can see where I am going with this. Of course, I am not dissing the utility of weight saving modifications. After all, there has got to be a limit to the amount of weight a person can reasonably lose. What I am advocating is: before decreasing the car weight, lose some weight first! It is a free mod! On the flip side, you could see what would happen if you splashed out moolah for those shiny light weight rims and spanking CF hood and hit the buffet table one time too many! All that cash would be wasted! So here is one more reason for you to watch that weighing scale this festive season!
  12. Not even 1 month.... LOL Statement from their Facebook a/c STATEMENT - BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, 25TH MARCH, 2010 Share Today at 11:08pm Dear fans, During our daily pre-opening testing yesterday morning prior to opening to the public, we found a technical problem on one of the ride vehicles and we are investigating at the Battlestar Galactica attraction. In keeping with our commitment to employee and guest safety, the ride was immediately closed by Universal Studios Singapore and will not be operating until we determine the cause and solution. Experts from the ride's design, engineering and manufacturing company are assisting our own experienced ride and show team in the inspection and any necessary action to resolve the situation. No one was injured and all proper authorities were notified, which is a standard Universal Studios Singapore operating policy. Employee and guest safety is our number one priority at Universal Studios Singapore. 13. Have some technical questions for you guys 1) When driving down the slope at 70~90 kmh, I noticed that the auto gear sometimes seems to be at low gear. As such, when I release the accellerator, can feel that it will slow down. At this moment, if I change the gear to neutral, will it damage the gear? Mine is a CVT. 2) Is it advisable to heat up the engine before driving? Every morning when I go to the carpark, I do see some of them doing so. Thanks
  14. S'pore Q3 GDP contracts 0.5%, 2008 seen at 3% SINGAPORE - The economy shrank by 0.5 per cent in the third quarter of this year from the same period a year ago, resulting in the Ministry of Trade and Industry lowering its expectation on full year growth to 3 per cent. MTI made the announcement when it revealed the advance estimates for the quarter ending September on Friday. On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter annualised basis, real gross domestic product (GDP) dropped by 6.3 per cent in the third quarter after contracting 5.7 per cent in the previous quarter. With two consecutive quarters shrinking, economists say Singapore is now in a technical recession, the first in six years. The Ministry last revised downwards the GDP in August to 4.0-5.0 per cent, with growth expected to come in at the lower end of the range. Explaining the latest revision on the outlook for this year, MTI said, 'The worsening financial crisis in the US in recent weeks has deepened the credit crunch, making it more difficult for businesses to sustain economic activities.' 'With unemployment on the rise and house prices continuing to fall, US consumer sentiment has weakened further and will affect demand for exports from Asia and the rest of the world. Singapore's export-oriented sectors, such as manufacturing, will be affected.' Sectors The manufacturing sector continued to be weighted down by the negative growth in biomedical sciences, as pharmaceutical companies are still producing a mix of pharmaceutical ingredients with values lower than compared to a year ago. The precision engineering and chemical clusters also slowed, because of weaker external demand. The construction sector grew by 7.8 per cent in the third quarter, compared to the 18.3 per cent growth in the first half of 2008. 'Despite a strong pipeline of construction projects, a shortage of contractors, a tight labour market for engineers and project managers, and longer waiting times for equipment, have delayed the realisation of these projects.' MTI added in a press release that the financial services sector was likely to see slower growth in the coming months as the ongoing global financial crisis has heightened uncertainties for sentiment-sensitive segments such as stocks trading and fund management activities. The Republic's last technical recession was in 2002. -- BT ONLINE
  15. Hello all, Sharing some information on the Contoller Area Network (CAN) and Local Interconnect Network (LIN) technologies which have found extensive uses in automotive applications. One of the main motivations of implementing such systems in current automotive applications is to reduce the number of wires, yet able to support the exchange of information in modern vehicles. Some technical information which will provides an overview of the CAN and LIN technologies. CAN: http://www.can-cia.org/can/ LIN: http://www.lin-subbus.de/main.asp?cls=onli...hod=view&id=969 The top European car manufacturers (VAG included) have adopted this technology since the early 1980s. Suffice to say, the VAG vehicles available today are already equipped with this proven and tested technology. Have fun reading the articles.

  23. This is a pretty technical question. I hope I can get some advise here. Otherwise, I'll appreciate if anyone can direct me to any website/forums which may have this answers. Here's my question: I have a input signal (with HPF at 150Hz) and I want to add a LPF and HPF at around 2KHz, such that I get 2 outputs. Output 1 at 150Hz - 2KHz and output 2 at 2KHz onwards. What's the exact capacitors should I get? Is there a place for me to find the formula to calculate this? I know the easiest way out is to buy a electronic crossover and just turn knobs. But I'm keen to build this myself for the purpose of learning. It's very interesting actually..... Thanks
  24. First and foremost, like to thank Assassin and Saaber for welcoming me. Being newbies, I appreciate your approach and invitation for the meetup session. After browsing the forum for the past 2 days, my knowledge on cars have widen; thanks to MCF. Although I learn a bit at delphiforum, however, I must say that the information available at MCF is fantastic. Keep up the good work guys. I am driving Spectra 4-door since Apr 03. So far, I have installed the following: a. Huper Optik b. Ground wire c. Strut Bar d. Body Kit The FC of my car is quite good, about 11++ but none compare to other Japanese cars. However, the horsepower is lacking. I wonder any members care to advise me on what other ways can I improve the car performance. I have in mind to do the following items in next few months: a. Install K&N Filter (originally intent to install open pod CAI) b. Twin SURBO c. Low Profile tyres (presently 185/65R14) - looking at YokoAVSdB However, I welcome any suggestions as I am new into this world of motoring as previously knowledge gain through friends. Onve again Kudos to MCF.
