  1. The US Army is currently testing a prototype all-purpose vehicle powered by a Subaru turbodiesel-electric hybrid drivetrain. Called the ULV (Ultra Light Vehicle), it is meant to replace the HUMVEE. Commissioned by the Secretary of Defense and developed by the US Army's TARDEC (Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center), the ULV addresses some of the HUMVEE's shortcomings and serve as the next generation of go-anywhere military truck. Unlike the HUMVEE's V8, the ULV's petrol motor is a Subaru turbodiesel boxer making 175 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. However, even the military is changing with the times with a hybrid drivetrain. According to Jalopnik, the hybrid system is comprised of two Remy electric drive motors and a 14.2 kWh Navitas Li-Iron Phosphate Battery, which at peak power can generate 180 kW (241 hp). TARDEC says the ULV has a range of 337 miles at 35 mph on level ground. On pure electric power, it can cruise up to 21 miles with the advantage of doing so in sheer silence. The electric motors mean that a driveshaft is no longer necessary, and when combined with an improved undercarriage it's a significant improvement over the HUMVEE's ability to shield occupants from roadside mines, whose blasts originate beneath the vehicle. Though the Ultra Light Vehicle is so in name only, and at 13 thousand pounds actually weighs about 3,500 pounds more than the HUMVEE, it has a better power-to-weight ratio thanks to its hybrid drivetrain. In accordance with specs put forth by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the vehicle will have a payload capacity of 4,500 pounds and cost of $250,000 per unit over a 5,000 unit production run. Testing is scheduled to finish sometime this year, whereupon a determination for production will be decided.
  2. Cycle & Carriage France Pte Ltd, the local distributors for French marque, Citroen, is pleased to announce a full range of turbodiesel passenger cars that will remain under COE Category A classifications despite the previously announced tweak taking effect from the start of the month. The range includes the 1.6-litre e-HDi 115 EGS equipped C4 and C5 models and 1.6-litre e-HDi 115 ETG equipped DS4 and DS5. Joining the range would be the upcoming 1.6-litre e-HDi 115 ETG C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso MPVs. Citroen's turbodiesel range promises to deliver drivers with key benefits - starting with a $15,000 Carbon Emissions-Based Vehicle Scheme (CEVS) rebate that is applicable across the full turbodiesel range. Furthermore, maintenance and fuel costs are reduced with Citroen's turbodiesel fleet - while not hindering mileage of up to 25km/L. The cars offer the highest torque delivery under Category A with 270Nm for a better drive and lower fuel consumption and the automaker assures the cars can be refuelled in Malaysia. The range of models are also equipped with Stop&Start technology for greater fuel savings and reduced carbon emissions. To top it off, Citroen offers a five year/100,000km warranty for all Citroen e-HDi turbodiesel models.
  3. The brand new Octavia III has won the overall 2013 "Tow Car of the Year award" in the UK. It also bagged the award for the "up to 1,424kg" category. Before I carry on, we are not talking about towing a broken-down car to the workshop but pulling a caravan. Caravanning is hugely popular in Britain. Auto Express teamed up with The Caravan Club and put 23 new cars through a series of tests to name the "Tow Car of the Year 2013". The award started just seven years ago. The Octavia that won the award is fitted with a 2.0-litre TDI that pumps out 150bhp with 320Nm of torque. Tipping the scale at 1,330kg (kerb weight), the Czech sedan is the lightest overall winner ever. The judges commented that the Skoda tows brilliantly and is extremely practical with a cargo space of 590 litres. It is good to drive and not costly to own. Most importantly, it proves that a great tow car doesn't need to be heavy, thirsty or expensive. There is no news regarding the Octavia III's availability in Singapore at the moment.
  4. Honda has released a set of photos showing the new Civic Wagon Concept. The concept will make its debut very soon at the Geneva Motor Show. The concept looks quite production ready if we take away the fancy LED surrounding the headlights and fog light casing. The twin-trapezoidal exhaust pipe setup is unlikely to make it to the production version as well. The Civic Wagon is probably one of the smartest looking of its kind among rival products such as the Golf Variant and Focus Wagon. The sleek front end combined with the beautiful front and rear wheel arches creates an aggressive stance. The steeply-raked windscreen further accentuates that sporty looks. The concept version wears large alloy wheels that fill up the wheel arches nicely. At the Geneva Motor Show, the Civic Wagon Concept will be equipped with Honda's latest 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel that is good for 118bhp and 330Nm of torque. The Civic Wagon will enter production next year and will be offered in Europe.
  5. Volkswagen has released the Edition 30 Caddy, the brand's light commercial vehicle, to commemorate its 30th year in production this year. The external changes of the Caddy Edition 30 include gloss black roof, fog lights, roof rails, twin halogen headlights, painted bumpers and 17-inch Budapest alloy wheels with black highlights. 'Edition 30' logo can be found on the dual sliding doors, rear end and door sills. On the inside, the special edition receives two-tone Alcantara upholstery, a leather steering wheel and climate control. Other goodies include an upgraded RCD 310 radio/CD unit, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors. The compact van is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine which is capable of 138bhp. The manual version completes the century sprint in 10 seconds while the six-speed DSG model takes just 0.1 seconds longer. The DSG-equipped Caddy returns a combined fuel consumption of 6.5 litres per 100km.

  8. Mazda has announced that the refreshed Mazda2 will be given its European premiere at next month's Paris motor show. The Japanese firm also plans to introduce a new 1.6-liter turbo diesel for the Mazda5 MPV, Mazda3 sedan and hatchback models at the show. The updated European specced Mazda2 benefits from a nose job with reprofiled bumper and face grille along with some minor interior upgrades. Other improvements include a tweaked chassis for better ride comfort and the introduction of a new automatic transmission variant with all engines in the Mazda2 lineup complying with the Euro 5 emissions standard. Mazda will also premiere a new 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine for the Mazda5 MPV and Mazda3 models. The new diesel produces 115HP and is matched to a six-speed manual transmission, returning a combined fuel economy of 5.2lt/100km on the Mazda5 and 4.4lt/100km on the Mazda3.
  9. The VW Group's new 1.6 TDI turbo diesel is making its way to the options list of the European market Skoda Superb saloon and Estate models, where it will replace the 1.9 TDI. While the smaller displacement 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel unit produces the same output figures as the 1.9 TDI with 105-horsepower and 250Nm of torque, it promises to offer improved diesel mileage and lower CO2 emissions. More specifically, the combined fuel consumption has been improved to 6.2lt/100km for the saloon and 6.3lt/100km for the Estate, while emissions have been reduced by 19g/km and 20g/km respectively. I have not heard of the new 1.6 TDI powering any VW models yet but its application on the Golf and Jetta would be welcomed.
