    <Toyota GR Corolla Teased with a Game of I Spy Toyota dropped a teaser on Instagram with tons of hidden clues about the upcoming hot hatch, which is expected to use a 268-hp three-cylinder engine. TOYOTA Toyota teased the upcoming GR Corolla hot hatch with an image shared on Instagram that featured hidden clues detailing the new model. The GR Corolla will be powered by the same turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine as the global GR Yaris. The GR Corolla is expected to debut sometime next year and go on sale as a 2022 model in the U.S. Ever since Toyota debuted the GR Yaris hot hatch and said that it wouldn't be sold in the United States, we've been itching for a version of one that we could buy here. After all, Toyota needs something to compete with the likes of the Honda Civic Type R, Volkswagen Golf R, and Hyundai Veloster N. Good thing Toyota isn't leaving us behind, because we're getting a GR Corolla soon. The company just dropped a teaser image on its Instagram account that give some hints of the new raucous hot hatch. WHAT WE EXPECT THE GR COROLLA TO LOOK LIKE. | ILLUSTRATION BY BEN SUMMERELL-YOUDE/FOX SYNDICATION | CAR AND DRIVER Naturally, the users over on the GR Corolla forum were quick to point out all the hints, which are scattered around an image of a standard Corolla's interior like a game of I Spy. GR stands for Gazoo Racing and is used on the Supra and the new GR86 sports car. The time indicated on the gauge cluster is G:16, which refers to the G16E-GTS turbocharged three-cylinder engine that's used in the GR Yaris. The 268-hp output of that powerful engine's Japanese version is found on the climate controls in the teaser image. European versions make 268 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, and the engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. That's not all. There's even a camouflaged GR Corolla hatchback in the background of the image (we tried to zoom in; you can't see much, sadly). There's a GR Four road in the navigation system, which refers to the advanced all-wheel-drive system that has Torsen limited-slip differentials in the front and the rear and an electronically controlled center differential. Look for more details on the new GR Corolla soon, as Toyota is sure to trickle out details about the new hot hatch before its reveal, likely next year, since it released almost all the details on the new Tundra pickup before its official debut.>
  2. The current 10th generation Civic was officially unveiled on 17 September 2015, and after close to 5 years, the next gen is on the horizon. The spy shots below shown the 5 door Type R variant, which look more upright than the current gen even though it was wearing heavy cladding. More spy shots of the other variants can be expected to surface very soon. Stay tuned.
  3. The next-gen hot hatch will still stand out in a crowd. The last couple of days have been busy in the Civic Type R world. Honda shared some "spy" photos, and then we caught video of the car in action sporting a single janky exhaust pipe. Not to fear, hot Honda fans – that pipe was just for testing purposes. A new round of decidedly unofficial Type R spy shots feature another red-wrapped prototype with all its production components, including the triple exhaust finishers out the back. Whereas Honda offered up just a pair of photos, our spy photographer grabbed 14 as the prototype went by. We already know the next Type R won't be as flamboyant as the outgoing model, but these shots offer a bit more context as to just what that entails. The front fascia features a large lower intake flanked by a pair of side intakes that look clean and aggressive without being shouty. The theme continues along the sides where we see rocker trim with a winglet in front of the rear wheel, similar to the current model. The biggest difference comes at the rear. Yes, that spoiler is large and in-charge, but barring clever panels hiding vents under the camo wrap (which actually is a menagerie of Rs when you look close), we'll have a modest pair of side vents flanking the center-exit exhaust. It's a far cry from the current Type R with its large corner vents and a plethora of contrasting angles. As for what's under the skin, expect to see a tweaked version of the current 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, turning just the front wheels with a six-speed manual. A slight bump in power is virtually guaranteed, but with front-wheel drive enduring as the order of the day, don't expect much more than the current Type R's 306 hp (228 kilowatts). The wrap should come off sometime next year as a 2023 model. More photos for your imagination.
  4. Honda wants to electrify two-thirds of its lineup worldwide by 2030, which means that future performance vehicles from the brand could eventually be EVs. Hideki Kakinuma, the Honda Civic Type R project leader, talked to Motor Trend about what might happen: "Yes, of course, an electric Type R is possible." He indicated that the major challenge was offering the necessary performance at a reasonable price. "If all the base concept and philosophy of being a Type R is fulfilled with an electric powertrain … sure, this can happen," Kakinuma told Motor Trend. Before getting too excited about the Type R EV, it's worth reading Kakinuma's statement to Motor1.com about the future of the Type R badge. "The ‘R’ in Civic Type R has always stood for racing, so expanding into something like an SUV or crossover doesn’t make sense," Kakinuma told us. "The Civic is currently the only vehicle in the Honda lineup to meet our requirements of what a Type R needs to be." Rumors suggest that the next-gen Civic Type R could adopt a hybrid powertrain because it offers the expected driving dynamics while improving emissions. Opting for a full EV isn't the plan, yet. If an electric Type R happens, then the new Honda E could be the first to wear the moniker. "Well, this new platform, the motor and tires can all take more," Honda Assistant Large Project Leader Takahiro Shinya told Top Gear in January. "What I can say is we love Type R, it’s such a strong halo brand for us. As engineers, we want to make Type R of every model, but it’s whether the customer wants it that matters." The standard Honda E packs an electric motor powering the rear axle that's available with either 136 horsepower (100 kilowatts) or 154 hp (113 kW), and bother variants make 232 pound-feet (315 Newton-meters) of torque. A 35.5-kilowatt-hour battery offers 137 miles (220 kilometers) on a charge. In Germany, prices start at €33,470 before incentives, and the Advance trim with more power goes for an additional €3,000.   5. Hi all, i have a similar question as OP as well. Can't create a new topic as i'm new to this forum, apologies. Thinking of buying my first car, budget around 30-40k and looking for manual cars preferably. With these 2 criteria in mind, i have shortlisted 2 cars - 2009 Honda Civic 1.8M and Subaru Impreza/STI (more out of budget). 1. For my first car, should i go for one with renewable COE (so that i can still sell next time) or just try try for 2-3 years and then scrape? 2. Any other manual cars available you guys would recommend? Quite hard to find manual cars nowadays... Any help would be much appreciated, cheers!

Europe’s emissions regulations are some of the strictest in the world, paving the way for a plethora of cars powered by three-cylinder 1.0-liter engines. Aside from having to embrace downsizing, automakers are also heavily investing in electrification to keep the legislators happy and avoid having to pay steep fines related to exceeding average fleet CO2 emissions. Honda is not immune to the changes and has vowed to electrify its entire Euro lineup by 2022, but with one important exception. The Civic Type R will go down in history as the last bastion of gas-only Hondas on the Old Continent, according to a new report from Autocar. While the adjacent rendering from X-Tomi Design illustrates a hypothetical sedan, the Type R formula will once again be applied to the hatchback format. Despite rumors suggesting the next hot hatch would go hybrid with all-wheel drive and around 400 horsepower, the British magazine claims Honda will stick to the tried-and-tested formula. It’ll allegedly retain the turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine, but with a minor bump in horsepower over the current 316 hp. Autocar claims the Civic Type R is unlikely to get a major boost considering its front-wheel-drive nature. The report goes on to specify torque delivery could see an improvement as a result of improving turbocharger response.   8. It is of utmost importance that we keep our brake systems working and healthy at all times. The following video perfectly illustrates why. Seen on 8th of December is a Honda Vezel exiting onto a busy Dunearn Road from one of the smaller lanes. The law-abiding drivers would know that you should never turn into the middle lane but this Vezel bravely crossed the double white line without hesitation. This caused the Honda Civic Type R camera car that submitted the video to SG Road Vigilante to claim that he had to slam on his brakes real hard, causing the brake hose to erm... break. In our opinion, the Honda Vezel driver is a joke but we must point out that the Type R camera car was also going at a good nick in the drizzle. Thankfully, there was no contact between the cars but the camera car driver made sure to give the Vezel driver a piece of his mind (Watch until the final moments of the video).
  9. Could this be another case of street racing spotted on our roads during the Circuit Breaker period? Spotted on Reckless Driver SG's facebook page, a video has been posted showing the camera car driving slowly on the middle land before a small group of cars went past it at a higher speed. Yes. this is milder than the incident on the KPE that had the drivers in the video arrested, with only three cars shown in the short 40-plus-second clip. In fact, we reckon the 'tiong chias' were doing approximately 120-140km/h while the camera car was doing 70-80km/h. The cars, likely a Ford Focus, a Honda FD Civic and a Honda Integra were caught on camera at around 11:20pm on the 25th of May heading towards AYE Jurong inside the CTE tunnel. 1.mp4 On another note, we were surprised to find most of the comments attacking the video owner, saying that the camera car was road-hogging.     Possible new variant for Honda Civic Type R

    Is Honda readying the facelifted Honda Civic Type R with new parts? Or could this be a lightweight special from the Japanese company? As reported by Carscoops, two prototype Civic Type Rs has been spotted being pushed to its limits on Nurburgring. A white coloured unit sporting a different bumper all round has been spotted before, signaling a forthcoming facelift and a yellow one shown here that is more interesting. Featuring a fully camouflaged roof and camouflaged air intake in the bonnet, these are signs that could point to Honda preparing for a lightweight variant of its hot hatch. It is also known that Honda is willing to add more variants to the civic if there is a demand for it. As of now, it is anyone's guess on what those camouflaged photos of the Civic Type R means but Honda fans would not need to wait too long as Honda is expected to introduce the updated Civic Type R late this year.

Thanks to Honda Australia, the New South Wales Police Force has been given the new hot hatch for the next 12 months for promotional duties. Set to be utilized in the ‘Eyewatch’ social media initiative that aims to connect people with local police forces, the car is one of the tools that will try to encourage citizens to be active participants in making their communities safer.   18. Seems like some keen-eyed people at FarmofMind caught the upcoming Honda Civic Type R at a shoot in Slovenia. While it is not clear whether this is the true final production model or a custom built Civic, we are already loving that huge wing which also incorporates the stunning taillamps. However, it is missing a thing or two as compared to the official disguised photos that Honda released sometime ago, like the flared fenders and a more aggressive front bumper. What it should not be missing is Honda's promise of more than 276bhp from the VTEC turbo 2.0-litre engine.
  19. Japan automaker Honda is keen to extend its street racing heritage by showcasing the latest Civic Type R. Albeit in concept form, the car looks all ready for production - and we won't be surprised if it does. Rumour has it that the new Civic Type R will get a 2.0-litre force-fed engine churning out figures north of 280 horses. And if this is true, it will be the first turbocharged Honda Type R. Other than the spolier tail lights, we expect much of the features on this concept to head on to production. More details will only come in when the car is unveiled in full glory at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Meanwhile, we have these trio of pictures to drool on.

    First details of the upcoming Civic Type R

    Earlier at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Honda’s Europe President, Manabu Nishimae, provided us with a lovely teaser video of the upcoming Honda Civic Type R. In addition to the video, he announced that it will be a 2.0-litre turbocharged lump (with a 7,000rpm redline) and would produce a minimum of 276bhp. We think that this is a brilliant move to keep in times with the current batch of hot hatches. What would be interesting is how Honda would keep all 276 ponies in check with all of them being channeled to the front wheels… At the same time Honda also claimed to make the new Civic Type R the fastest front-wheel drive production car around the ‘Ring' and has apparently gotten pretty close to the timing currently held by the current record holder - the Megane 265 Cup.     The Honda Type R Family Tree (Part 2)

    In the first installment of this article, I focused on the NSX and Accord Type R models. In this part, I will discuss about the other two Honda models that were given the Type R treatment; the Honda Integra and the Honda Civic. Lets start off with the Integra first. In the mid 1990s, Honda released the DC2 Integra Type R. The JDM model had rectangular headlights and the worldwide model came with circular headlights. The car was fitted with the legendary 1.8-litre B18C engine which was capable of delivering almost 200bhp and this enabled the car to complete the century sprint in 6.7 seconds. The next and last Integra Type R was the DC5 model. Released in 2001, the car was exclusively sold in the Japanese and several other right hand drive markets. It received the K20A engine which was also fitted in the FD2R Civic and the CL7 Accord Type R. Although the car was slightly heavier than the DC2, it is faster due to the extra horsepower and torque. Some car enthusiasts consider the DC5 Integra Type R to be the best among the Type R cars. Let's move on to the Civic models. The first Civic model to receive the Type R name was the EK9 Civic. The car was proceeded by two previous unofficial Type R models which is the EF and EG SiR. The EF and EG SiR were fitted with the infamous B16A engine and it was considered practical for the EK9 Type R to receive an engine from the same family. The EK9 Type R was fitted with the 1.6-litre B16B which boasted one of the highest power output per litre of all time for an NA engine at 185bhp. The EK9 had a seam welded monocoque chassis which improved the car's chassis rigidity. Like other Type R models, the car was fitted with goodies such as Recaro seats, sports pedals and a Momo steering wheel. The next Civic Type R generation was the EP3 Civic Type R. the car was built in the United Kingdom, regardless of where it was sold. The JDM model was shipped to Japan and it received some final touches and parts. One of the parts the JDM model got was the helical limited slip differential which was missing from the European model. The car received either the K20A engine (JDM model) or the K20A2 (European model). The JDM model was slightly more powerful in terms of horsepower and obviously it was faster in the century sprint. The JDM model also received a more track-orientated chassis and the championship white body colour was exclusive for JDM models only. The next Civic Type R came in two variants; the European market FN2R and the JDM FD2R. The FN2 Civic Type R came in a three door hatchback body style and it used a different chassis from the EP3. The engine fitted was basically the same one from the previous generation. It made around 200bhp and 193Nm of torque. The double wishbone rear suspension from the previous generation was replaced with a torsion beam axle for the FN2R. Although the FN2 Civic Type R was made exclusively for the European market, the model was also available in many right hand drive countries including Japan. The Japanese market FD2R came in a four door sedan body style and it was more powerful than the Euro model as it was fitted with the K20A engine. It made around 220bhp with a torque of 215Nm. The engine is mated to a close ration six speed gearbox and a limited slip differential was fitted on the car as a standard. The FD2R received a more sophisticated independent rear suspension compared to the FD2R's torsion beam axle. The FD2R was seen as a more popular choice than the European model as the body was more rigid, had better steering feedback and a more balance chassis. The Honda Type R family tree is set to grow even more as the company has mentioned that the next generation Civic Type R will be released in the year 2015. It may be a different machine as it will be turbocharged but at least the Type R name will not end up as a piece of automotive history.

    The Honda Type R family tree (Part 1)

    Honda has announced that the Civic Type R is coming back and it will feature a turbocharged engine. There were many cars that were given the Type R moniker and the Civic was not the first one. Let us take a look at the cars that were given the Type R treatment. In the first part of this article, I will focus on the NSX and Accord models. The very first car that was given the Type R moniker was the NSX. The NSX Type R was basically a stripped out model that was heavily focused for track usage. Many parts were removed and some were replaced with lightened ones. And Honda managed to remove around 120kg from the base car. The NSX Type R was fitted with a 3.0-litre engine which made around 280bhp and is able to complete the century sprint in 4.8 seconds. Honda produced 483 units of the NSX Type R and it is available only in the Japanese market. A second generation, known as the NSX-R, was released ten years later and the car had several differences. One of the main exterior differences was the headlights. The pop-up lights of the previous model were replaced with a normal one. The NSX-R's engine is slightly bigger in displacement, just 200cc more. Although the engine is bigger but the horsepower is still the same as previously but it produced more torque. This enabled the car to sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds. The second generation NSX-R was also exclusively made for the Japanese market. For the Accord models, the first Type R example was the CH1 Accord Type R and the CL1 Accord Type R. The CH1 Accord was made for the UK and EU market while the CL1 model was sold in the Japanese market. Both models were fitted with the 2.2-litre H22A engine. The CH1 engine made around 210bhp while the CL1 delivered around 220bhp. Both cars were fitted with stiffened suspension systems, a limited slip differential, twin piston brakes and were given Recaro seats and a Momo steering wheel. The CH1 Accord Type R completes the century sprint in 7 seconds and the CL1 Accord Type R was slightly faster with 6.9 seconds. The next Accord Type R was the CL7 Accord Type R. The car was built in Japan and was made available exclusively for the Japanese market. The car was fitted with the highly tune-able 2.0-litre K20A engine, which was also fitted in the DC5 Integra Type R and FD2 Civic Type R. The engine delivered around 220bhp and had a torque of around 206Nm. The CL7 Accord Type R roughly received similar Type R goodies as the previous generation.   24. Ever since Honda stopped production for their Civic Type R and S2000 models, the Japanese automaker has not produced any sports or performance based car. You could argue that the Honda CR-Z looks sporty. But that is as much as someone could say about the CR-Z. What many people are wishing for is the car (or range of cars) that made Honda a popular choice among performance enthusiasts and that is the Type R cars.     4 Door Civic Type R(IP)

    Honda Motor announced it will discontinue production of the 4-door Civic Type R (CTR) at the end of August, 2010. A purist's sports car featuring precisely tuned vehicle dynamics, the Civic Type R creates a unity between car and driver for exceptional driving pleasure. To fill in the gap vacated by the impending death of the 4 door CTR, Honda will begin sales of a limited edition of the Civic Type R Euro in Japan this fall. It will feature an updated exterior design for the 2010 model year. The Japanese automaker mentions that the Euro CTR is well received by drivers in their 30s to 40s, who value a sports car as part of un upscale lifestyle. The 4 door CTR has always been described as the more 'hardcore' version of the two, with its stiffer suspension higher power output.
