  3. While car makers like PSA Peugeot, Citroen and Opel are announcing job cuts and factory shutdown due to declining sales, Skoda appears to buck the trend. The year-to-date sales of the Czech car maker grew by 6.9% between January to November. Absolute figure is about 873,000 units. For the month of November, they posted an increase of 3.8% in their worldwide deliveries due to growth in China, India, Russia and Europe. "Once again, we increased our deliveries even though markets were difficult," said Werner Eichhorn,
  4. After showing bits and pieces of the 2013 Skoda Octavia, the Czech automaker has finally revealed the new sedan in one piece. Anyone familiar with new Skoda Rapid will instantly recognise the new model as a skoda even with the logo covered. It is 90mm longer and 45mm wider than its predecessor and rides on a wheelbase that is 108mm longer. The MK3 Skoda has an evolutionary design whose side profile reminds me of the B5.5 Passat while the tail light design resembles those of the C6 Audi A6. Although the design elements are not new, the whole package comes across as a solidly put-together sedan that would do the VW Group proud. The interior has a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel together with a new gear stick. Panorama glass roof is available on the option list. The Octavia also has the best-in-class cargo capacity of 590 liters. Nine engines will be offered on the new Octavia but Skoda only confirmed two of them at the moment. They are the 1.8-litre TSI with 179bhp and the 1.6-litre TDI with 110bhp. All engines will be mated to a DSG transmission.
  5. Skoda has released a set of new teaser images for its 2013 Octavia sedan. These images highlight the design of its grille, side mirror, C-pillar and LED tail light assembly. The only interior shot reveals the existence of steering-mounted paddle shifter, voice command buttons and a large infotainment screen. Skoda has indicated that the new Octavia will move upmarket with higher quality interior as the newly introduced Rapid will take over the segment currently occupied by the MK2 Octavia. The new generation Octavia will also gain in physical dimension to take on the big boys in the medium sized class such as the Camry and Accord. The Czech automaker is expected to unveil the new Skoda Octavia at the 2013 Geneva motor show in March. The new model is based on the same MQB platform as the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 and is expected to inherit a range of TSI four-cylinder petrol and TDI engines from it.

  7. The next generation Skoda Octavia has been spied almost naked in this latest spy video of the new Czech mid-sized sedan. As evident from the video, the Mk3 Octavia stays close to the general design of Skoda cars seen in the Mk2 version and the new Rapid sedan. The new model adopts a smaller grille and more angular head lamp design. The new Octavia will be larger than the outgoing model to distant itself from the Rapid. It will also be more upmarket. The new model will be underpinned by VW
  8. [extract] Skoda has released initial details and photos for their all-new Rapid compact sedan that sits between the Fabia and the Octavia models. The new model was conceptualized by the MissionL concept at last year
  9. [extract] 2011 was a record year for the VW Group, posting 8.36 million sales worldwide. The man at the helm, Martin Winterkorn, naturally gets rewarded handsomely as VW nearly doubled the pay for its chief executive. Winterkorn earned
  10. The Volkswagen Group is defying the economic crisis and gearing up to set a new sales milestone this year. For the first time in its history, the German maker sold 6.11 million vehicles in the first nine months of the year, representing a 13.9 percent increase over the same period in 2010. "We are very pleased with the development of the Group. Delivering six million vehicles in nine months represents a key milestone on the way to reaching our annual target of eight million vehicles sold in 2011," said Group Board member for Sales Christian Klingler. "We are also expecting very good delivery figures for the fourth quarter. We continue to keep a close eye on developments in global automobile markets, some of which are highly volatile," Klingler added. The VW Group also enjoyed sales increase in all regions between January to September 2011. The breakdown is as follows: Asia Pacific: +17.3% to 1.92 million units North America: +21.4% to 485,400 units South America: +9.5% to 700,900 units Europe: + 10.8% to 2.77 million units In its home market of Germany, the VW Group's deliveries grew by 12.3 percent to 864,400 units. 11. Fights among family members are inevitable. Such is the case at the Volkswagen Group, where Audi and Porsche were both fighting for the right to develop future sports cars and luxury sedans for the German auto conglomerate's portfolio of brands. Ultimately, Porsche got the last laugh as Volkswagen CEO, Martin Winterkorn, decided to give task to Porsche. This means Porsche will develop future platforms that will underpin high-performance automobiles using front-mid and rear-mid-mounted drivetrains for itself, Audi and Lamborghini. Porsche will also be tasked with the next generation "modular standard matrix" platform for the next Panamera sedan, which will also be shared with Bentley. All is not lost for Audi. It will take the lead in the development of the group's "modular longitudinal matrix," which will underpin vehicles as the Audi A4, A5 and Q5. Finally, Volkswagen will continue to work on its volume platform, the "modular transverse matrix", that is used by such models as the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3. The goal of all these specific engineering assignments is of course cost savings. By consolidating multiple platforms into a few modular structures, VW Group's procurement and production costs are reduced by 20 percent, and engineering costs by 30 percent.

    Anti-icing windscreen

The VW Group, in association with the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Technology (IST) in Braunschweig, is researching into a windscreen that may reduce ice formation in cold climate. Researchers have introduced what they claim to be the first anti-fogging and anti-icing car windscreen. Unlike heated windows, the new glass panes make use of a physical principle that does not allow an ice layer to form in the first place, even at temperatures as low as -18 C. The secret lies in a wafer-thin transparent coating of indium tin oxide that is applied to the window and in theory, stops heat from building up and prevents or delays cooling of the glass surface to below the dew point. Volkswagen calls it a
