  1. It is an expected move from Volkswagen - a more potent, all-wheel drive variant to top the Golf range. But now it has got almost 300bhp from the redeveloped 2.0-litre lump taken off its GTI stablemate. Is this VW's hottest hot hatch yet? 2.0-litre. Four cylinders. 296bhp. 380Nm. 5.3 seconds. These are the figures from the latest Golf R. In comparison, the Mk7 GTI has 220bhp and 350Nm of torque. That is almost 80 more horses in a similarly-sized hatchback. While the weight of the new R is not disclosed yet, we expect the Haldex four-wheel drive system to put a toll on the R at the scales. Then, the fifth generation of the AWD system promises up to 100 percent torque transfer to the rear axle - all done in fraction of a second via the Haldex coupling with help of an electro-hydraulic pump. Some cool tech there. To us, the previous gen Golf R was mind-blowing enough with 256bhp and 330Nm of torque. But then, we bet it was only right for VW to increase the power figures as it is the natural way to showcase its progress - as with any car manufacturer. Then, we would gladly have the twin-centre pipes (which we thought was the iconic symbolisation of the R) over the quad pipes, any day, anytime. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this wouldn't be a mere figure-boasting exercise.
  2. If driving a car is one of your daily routines, I suppose that you know how it feels to be surprised by a vehicle that just comes out of nowhere every now and then. The vehicle seems to have come out of nowhere because each and every single car out there has a blind spot. In fact, due to the blind spot, automakers are now equipping their cars with technologies that can help drivers with the blind spot issue. One automaker to do this is Volkswagen (VW). The German automaker is now equipping its cars with what it calls 'Side Assist' technology. Taking advantage of two rear radars, this technology is capable of scanning the areas behind the car for as far as 50 metres and also in the blind spots at the sides of the car. This technology will light an indicator at the side mirrors when a vehicle is in the blind spot. So, if there's a vehicle in the blind spot of the left side, VW's side assist technology will light the indicator at the left side mirror. To introduce its side assist feature, Volkswagen has come up with something that may turn out quite strange, or somehow amusing. The German automaker creates a video advertisement showing a man cleaning himself up in front of the mirror when, all of a sudden, a rather chunky, bearded man stares at him from behind the back. Afterwards, a message is displayed saying, "Beware of the biker that comes from nowhere."
  3. While you're driving on the road, one rule of thumb that you'll always have to keep in mind is to be careful, real careful. You have to watch out not only for vehicles to avoid a crash, but you'll also have to beware of drivers who may go mad at you, even if you think you've done not even a single thing that's wrong. I believe you don't want to experience what this motorcycle rider did. Unfortunately enough for the motorcycle rider, he got slapped in the middle of the road by a guy driving a Volkswagen Golf. Honestly, this Golf driver is kind of stupid, I would say, thinking that the motorcycle rider was trying to race him. He claimed that the rider was riding aggressively while in fact it was the VW Golf driver himself who was an aggressive driver and the public could see it as well. Based on what we can see in the video, in addition to the statement from the motorcycle rider which seemed true, we tend to believe that the Golf driver was entirely wrong. Besides, had the motorcycle rider tried to race him, he would have gone past the VW Golf way ahead, keeping in mind how motorcycles can easily slip through traffic whereas cars can't. In addition to that, most of today's motorcycles have really fast acceleration. Just try to recall for yourself, how often have you seen motorcycles going past cars so easily? I believe it happens nearly all the time. However, the response of the motorcycle rider is somewhat cool, I should say. Instead of fighting back, he chose to report the aggressive driver to the local police department. All that's left to do now is to wait for police investigation to complete and it should not take long as the Golf driver had already been identified. According to the rider, one little slap was no big deal, but had the Golf driver hit him the second time, he would have taken his revenge and things would have gone out of hand. Furthermore, the motorcycle rider was putting on a full face helmet, carbon gloves, and protective gear. With that being said, you should be able to imagine how bad things could have gone for the stupid guy in the VW Golf. Well, two thumbs up for you, motorcycle rider!
  4. Just to refresh your memory, at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show, the German automaker Volkswagen (VW) displayed its BlueSport roadster concept. Unfortunately, not long afterwards, VW postponed the project. Some early reports mentioned that the reason production of the roadster was postponed was because the German automaker didn't see a business opportunity for the model while I would say otherwise. The car looks attractive and that, alone, should be able to attract quite a few customers already. Add that with quite an affordable price tag for a roadster, you may be surprised by the number of people interested in spending their cash on the model. Yet, rumours have been swirling on the internet with some still believing that the roadster will finally come to life. I, for one, would like to see the open-top model comes into production. Despite the various rumours on the World Wide Web, there's now a bigger chance that the VW BlueSport will actually hit our showrooms within the near future. At least, this seems to be what Walter de Silva is trying to tell us, although not so explicitly. The VW Design Chief told AMS, "I'm not the only one in our company who is convinced that a small roadster wouldn't be the worst thing for Volkswagen. This is a vehicle that we particularly like, and we always have in mind." Well, I agree with you, de Silva, I like the open-top very much, too. Therefore, it's nice to know that there're still some insiders in VW that would like to move on with this particular project. Moreover, it was confirmed by one of the German automaker's spokesperson. Just in case you can't really recall, the VW BlueSport roadster concept carried a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine when it debuted at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. The engine is good enough to spit out 177bhp in addition to 349Nm of torque. Volkswagen claimed that the fuel consumption of the roadster could reach 23.2km/L, which is quite efficient in my opinion. The company also mentioned that the car would need only 6.6 seconds to reach 100km/h from a complete standstill. Also, expect no less than 225km/h when it comes to the top speed of the car. Given its model and engine specifications, I'd say the BlueSport concept may well be slotted under such brands as Porsche and Audi. Yet again, perhaps it doesn't really matter as both the brands belong to VW as well. Now that the VW BlueSport roadster may finally come to life, here's hoping that VW won't forget to ship the model to the showrooms here in Singapore as well. By the way, the roadster is estimated to cost around USD$30,000 (around S$37,000). As I said earlier, it's quite affordable for a roadster, isn't it? The only drawback so far that I can think of about this roadster is probably its roof. I think it would have been better if VW applied a hardtop, but perhaps, the softtop is a better solution for the current estimated price tag of the roadster.
  5. You know what they say, "Do whatever you want, just don't get caught!" Unfortunately (or thankfully, perhaps), these teenage car thieves in the United Kingdom don't seem quite knowledgeable about such a saying. Instead, these thieves just seemed so proud of their 'stealing' ability that they even shot pictures of themselves with the cars they had successfully stolen. What amazes me more is that they even posted the pictures on Facebook, a world renowned social media, and on their phones! This led the local police to catch them red-handed, or should I say, 'bread-handed' (you'll see why). It's a real 'shame' to the world of Grand Theft Auto. Speaking of Grand Theft Auto, it reminds me of the action adventure packed car theft game, the latest trailer of which will be shown on 30th April 2013. Alright, let's get back to topic. To be honest with you, these teenagers, aged from 18-23 years old, were quite an expert indeed. Comprising eight members, they managed to successfully steal nine high performance sports cars that were, and still are, very expensive. Porsches, Range Rovers, BMWs, and a Mercedes Coupe worth

  7. Are you an owner of a VW Scirocco? Does yours look any cooler than this one? This tuned VW Scirocco has been spotted in China quite recently. But why the VW Scirocco? Well, it's probably because in China, they say that this particular model from the German automaker Volkswagen is often fancied by Chinese young men with tight pants. So, while the body of the car retains its originality
  8. During the early 1970s, Volkswagen released a special edition Beetle known as the Beetle GSR. The GSR moniker is short for Gelb Schwarzer Renner which is German for yellow black racer. The original Volkswagen Beetle GSR was built in limited numbers; 3,500 units were manufactured and they were only available for the German market. It was such a huge hit that it was sold out within two months. Volkswagen is bringing back the yellow black racer for 2014 and just like before, only 3,500 units will be built but this time it will be made available worldwide. The GSR will be one of the fastest Beetle Volkswagen ever built. It will be fitted with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that delivers around 210bhp and a torque value of 280Nm. The Beetle GSR completes the 0-100km/h timing in 6.6 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph (209km/h). The engine is said to be the same unit that will be featured in the Beetle Turbo and the Jetta GLI. The Beetle GSR features a unique black and yellow colour scheme, both exterior and interior. The car receives the Beetle's R-Line bodykit and it is fitted with 19" aluminium-alloy wheels which are wrapped with 235/40 tyres. The brake callipers are painted in black to accentuate the colour scheme. In the interior department, the seats and steering wheel are upholstered in black leather and stitched with contrasting yellow thread. The Beetle GSR is based on the Beetle Turbo with Sunroof and Sound model. It receives a comprehensive list of equipment such as a Fender audio system, xenon headlights, Bluetooth connectivity and a start push button. A limited edition number badge is situated at the bottom of the steering wheel (1 to 3500). The Volkswagen Beetle GSR was recently showcased at the Chicago Auto Show and the company will include it in its 2014 model line-up.
  9. You might have heard or read stories of warehouses or buildings filled with old cars. Basically, this term is known as a barn find, even though it may not be always be at the barn. Usually, the place will be filled with a variety of old cars. Some may be in a complete form whereas some might not be. In Brazil, there is a warehouse that is filled with cars of a certain model and that model is the Volkswagen SP2 - a model that was built exclusively in Brazil. There are a total of twenty-three Volkswagen SP2s in the warehouse. Sixteen units are in a complete form and the remaining seven are disassembled. Most of the cars have some of their parts stripped out. The disassembled cars are stacked up on their ends and this may not be good for their bodies. It is rumoured that the owner of the warehouse and these cars are putting the Volkswagen SP2s for sale. The cars may be stripped of their parts but there are also many SP2 parts lying around and probably there would be enough to make a complete car if anyone is willing to buy one. Other than the Volkswagen SP2s, the owner has other models too. He also has a six door Volkswagen Kombi van, a Karmann Ghia TC and a Fiat 128. It is not known if these cars are for sale. The Volkswagen SP2 was Volkswagen Brazil
  10. Just recently, Volkswagen unveiled the Polo R WRC which is considered the road version of the rally bound Polo that will participate in the World Rally Championships and not much was said about the racing version or how will it look like. But now, Volkswagen has finally revealed the race version of the Polo R WRC which will make its competition debut at the 2013 Monte Carlo Rally in January. Although Volkswagen did not give out any technical specifications or power figures, the car is built to the latest WRC specifications and that means it is fitted with a turbocharged 1.6 litre four cylinder engine. Even with an air restrictor, the engine is said to make around 300bhp. The engine is mated to a six speed sequential gearbox and due to WRC regulations, a mechanical differential is fixed onto the front and rear axle. An exceptional feature of the engine is the anti-lag turbocharger system. When the driver lifts his/her leg off the acceleration pedal, the turbo
  11. Rumour has it that Volkswagen is preparing a performance version of the all new Beetle. But before Volkswagen releases such a vehicle, the German automaker is giving us a glimpse of what the future might have in store by offering us the Volkswagen Beetle R-Line. The Volkswagen Beetle R-Line model is available in two different packages; an exterior package and an interior package. The exterior package may be ordered separately, while the interior package is always offered as an extension of the R-Line exterior details. The exterior package includes front bumpers with independent black grained air inlets and chrome surrounds for the directional indicators, a rear diffuser, special body side panels and door mirror housings in body colour, R-Line logos on the front body beneath the A-pillars and 18 inch "Twister" alloy wheels. The R-Line interior package includes sport seat system with seats upholstered with an active-breathing fabric in "Kyalami" design, front head restraints with R-Line badge, leather trimmed sport steering wheel, the gear shift lever boot and the handbrake grip with decorative seams in "Art Grey" and decorative inlays in "Dark Vanadium.

  13. [extract] Many manufacturing companies realised that the most effective way to leverage niche talent is to establish a team in the heart of the segment. From video game makers to chocolatiers, companies relocate their offices to seek specific talents and also to have a better local feel. Automakers do the same thing too. Southern California is known for its fanatical car culture and the place has become like a capital city for automakers seeking a better taste of the region
  14. In order to attract buyers in the United Kingdom for their new model, Skoda has recreated the prehistoric monument, Stonehenge, out of old cars. Known as the Citihenge, the art installation was built to mark the arrival of the Skoda Citigo, which is the Czech version of Volkswagen's Up! model. The unique replica of the Stonehenge is made entirely out of recycled car parts. The project is led by sculptor Tommy Gun and together with a design team, took three months to create. The ambitious piece of art, built using 18 scrap cars, stands at over five metres tall. Each "henge" is five metres wide and the commanding structure weighs a remarkable 36 tonnes. Pietro Panarisi, Skoda's spokesperson says, "The Citigo embodies the future of driving and is the smartest option for forward-thinking city drivers. While traditional cars struggle to perform well under the strain of city driving, the Citigo is designed to excel in the urban environment. Citihenge symbolises the beginning of a new era of motoring and we hope drivers across the country will recognise this important turning point." Tommy Gun has this to say about the project, "The Citihenge project has been the most amazing challenge. Stonehenge is a huge, iconic structure and the Citihenge replica is too. It is made entirely from old car parts, which taps into my own childhood growing up on a farm where I used to love building and creating things with pieces of discarded machinery." The Citihenge was erected on the south bank of the Thames river next to London's famous Tower Bridge and it will make a tour around the United Kingdom which includes the Goodwood Festival of Speed and its celebration of car culture, in West Sussex from 28th June
  15. Recently a friend of mine was interested in 'upgrading' his Mazda Roadster (that's Miata MX5 to most of you) to a 2+2. Choices included the BMW 320Ci, the Audi A5 and even the Volkswagen Scirocco. We had a small discussion on the cars mentioned above. It made me take a long look at the Scirocco and I realized why I never caught on with its looks or why it didn't make me weak in the knees even though it drove extremely well, had a great sports car driving position and was very well put together. The reason was that the Volkswagen Scirocco is actually a fifth generation Honda Civic EG model from the early to mid-1990s fitted with wider arches. The VW Scirocco is supposed to be a three door coupe. In reality it is as low as the Honda Civic mentioned above. It may be wider than the Civic but if you look carefully, it does have the same side silhouette as the Civic. Take a proper look at both car's C pillars. Imagine the EG Civic with a wide arched bodykit (and slightly smaller rear windows) with different badging and you get a VW Scirocco. This is especially even clearer if you were slightly drunk or on medication. I somehow think that VW missed the boat in styling the Scirocco. It should have been done like an updated version to the VW Corrado (below) instead of a very sporty Golf which it is based on. It should have had a more sloping rear hatch instead of still thinking of being practical and all that. Since VW already has the Golf for practicality I still wonder why VW didn't go the whole hog and make a proper coupe. What VW actually came up with is a recycled Honda Civic EG series with a wider rear end. Imagine what would VW do in about fifteen years or so, a copy of the final Euro Civic type R hatchback with wider rear arches?
  16. The Volkswagen Beetle is an iconic car and some rock stars have probably driven them (especially the original Beetle). And now the German automaker has infused the rock and roll formula into one of its newest models, the current generation Beetle. Volkswagen will introduce a special edition Beetle at the Leipzig Auto Show and it will be known as the Beetle Fender Edition. The car was first seen as a concept car at the 2011 Frankfurt International Auto Show. The car will get several Fender-unique features which demonstrate its affiliation with the American musical icon. Many would know about Fender as one of the major producers of guitars and its accessories and many professional musicians such as Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix have used their products. The company recently expanded into the car audio business by teaming up with Panasonic to produce sound systems for Volkswagen. The Beetle Fender Edition stands out with unique interior and exterior styling. Its distinctively painted dashboard features the classic sunburst colour of Fender guitars, and the vehicle's interior is accented with colour-contrasting seams that complement the dash's colours. Beetle Fender Edition vehicles equipped with the 200-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four- cylinder TSI engine will receive seats with exclusive fabric inserts. Outside, all Beetle Fender Edition vehicles are painted in Deep Black Metallic and also feature brushed chrome exterior mirrors, 18-inch "Disc" aluminium-alloy wheels, bi-xenon head lights, and the famous Fender logo. The Fender Premium Audio System debuted in the Jetta GLI in the United States and the Beetle is the first Volkswagen vehicle in Europe equipped with the high-performance sound setup. Using proprietary Panasonic speaker technology, the system cuts through noise and other distractions with front dual-voice coil speakers to create a sound closely similar to a true, live performance. The Beetle Fender Edition will first go on sale in Europe and will be available in America in the third quarter of 2012. Photo credit: Net Car Show
  17. [extract] Many here would have already known about the revised special tax for Euro V compliant diesel cars that was announced by the government earlier this year. Previously, the annual rate per cubic centimetre is at S$1.25. Though since starting from 01 January 2012, the annual rate has been reduced to S$0.40 per cubic centimetre. This revision is made due to the recognition in Euro V
  18. [extract] Sports utility vehicles are gaining much popularity in the past five years, especially crossovers. While other automakers are churning out SUV models one after another, Volkswagen currently has only two models which are the Tiguan and Touareg. Its subsidiary, Audi, currently has three SUV models with three more planned in the near future and this made Volkswagen
  19. [extract] German automakers have an obsession with making their ordinary car models into blistering, tarmac shredding performance models. Mercedes Benz has their AMG line-up, BMW has its M vehicles, Audi does it with their RS models and Volkswagen has its R brand. With more powerful engines and exclusive styling, these models are considered to be formidable vehicles. Volkswagen has added another one of its model to the R line-up and it

  21. Hardly any other car model (or mini bus for this instance) has such a high cult status as the Volkswagen Bus. It has been around for over 60 years and the Type 2 model is still in production in Brazil. Volkswagen is dead serious on its heritage as they have appointed Franz-Josef Paefgen (in October last year), former chief executive of Audi, Bentley and Bugatti, to head their classics program. At Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the Volkswagen Bus has its own department dedicated in preserving its heritage and it is known as the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimer. The department was set-up in 2007 and in five years, it has expanded really fast. The team at the Oldtimer department has purchased and restored over 100 vehicles. They also do restoration for external customers, inclusive of detailed documentation of their work on the vehicles. Due to the formation of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimer department, they moved to a new building in Hannover, Germany at the beginning of this year. The new facility has approximately 7000 square meters of space that houses these historic vehicles. On top of that, it also has a machine park that includes a sheet metal bending bench, lathe and milling machines and its own paint shop. The department currently has 13 employees, from mechanics to even an event planner. Owners of a historic Volkswagen vehicle can have their rides restored there and regardless whether it is a full or partial restoration, the staff there will take on any assignment. They will talk through all personal wishes with the vehicle owners before preparing any individually custom job. The unique feature of the department is the detailed documentation of any restoration work. Every comprehensive step is photographically documented and described in detail. In this manner, the work done are left for future customers, who can browse through their folders whenever they visit the place. Photo credit: Auto Blog

  24. With the recent release of their MQB platform, it is expected that Volkswagen will release the next generation Golf some time in the fourth quarter of this year and Volkswagen will introduce changes to the model that is normally found in higher end models. It is rumoured that Volkswagen will debut the Mk 7 Golf at the 2012 Paris Motor Show this year (29 September to 14 October) and the car will be packed with technology that is usually associated with luxury models. The car will come in several engine variants, from the ordinary petrol engine up to a plug-in hybrid that generates around 243bhp. The normal models are powered by a new series of downsized petrol engines (code EA211) and diesel engines (code EA288). The top of the range diesel model (non GTD) will generate around 181bhp and 380Nm of torque. There is also a 220bhp twin turbocharged diesel engine that the company is still putting under some tests and this one will likely end up in the GTD sub-model. As for the petrol engines, the smallest displacement engine is a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine that generates around 138bhp and it features cylinder deactivation for increased economy. The larger engine (code EA888) sizes are at 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre. The Mk 7 Volkswagen Golf GTI gets the most radical change of all. The 2.0-litre engine will deliver around 260bhp, a 50bhp increase from the current generation. The next Golf GTI will feature the new VAQ electronically controlled front differential and Volkswagen mentioned that it will offer a more agile steering behaviour and a much greater sense of steering precision. All wheel drive and the company
  25. The cross-sharing of platforms and technologies between models in the automotive industry is not exactly new but in the recent years, many automakers have focused on this even more. The Volkswagen Group is one such company and we can clearly see this in models within the group. Volkswagen has rolled out a new and important piece of technology that will be used in their vehicles starting this year. It is the MQB platform which is Modularer Querbaukasten in German. In English it means Modular Transverse Matrix platform. Flexibility and reduced production costs are the key reasons for this platform. Volkswagen will build 30 models under this particular platform. It covers all models above the group
