Subaru has released another special edition WRX STI. Probably the swansong for this generation of the WRX, all 500 units have been spoken for. Traditionally regarded to be the final evolution for each generation of the Japanese all-wheel drive sports sedan, the RA-R badge stands for 'Record Attempt-Racing' and the launch of the car is also meant to commemorate the 30th anniversary of STI. With the company focusing on developing the car with 'lightness, speed and pleasure' in mind, the car has been upgraded in quite a few areas. Armed with a revised 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, the engine now produces 325bhp and 432Nm of torque and will allow the car to do the century sprint in the four seconds range . Subaru fans will be happy to know that its power to weight ratio figure is 4.498, which is a value that betters the 4.589 set in the previous special edition S208 model. Subaru also reports that its exhaust's ventilation resistance has been reduced by about 60 percent relative to its standard model while better management of airflow from the front intakes have increased the intercooler's cooling capabilities. In terms of handling, the car now wears high grip Michelin made pilot sports 4S tyres and has its suspension revised to give a 10mm lower ride height. Elsewhere, new STI made BBS 18-inch aluminum wheel, dry carbon made aero door mirror cover, a reduction of the windscreen washer tank from 4-litres to 2.5-litres, front and rear sports seats and STI Duracon shift knob help cut down the weight of the car. The car retails for S$60,700, around S$12,000 more than a WRX STI in Japan.

HKS has some new products for the new Subaru WRX STi and got someone to do a short film to show us what they can do to improve the car's daily drivability. The products shown in the beautifully shot video includes its new HIPERMAX MAX IV GT suspension which is said to be able to retain a smooth ride when driving on a rough road surface while still providing a high level cornering performance. Fitment of its HI-POWER SPEC L sports exhaust saves around 10kg of weight when swapped out with the stock exhaust. Re-flashing of the CPU was also done to improve power throughout the rev range. Mark Higgins breaks record with the new WRX STi at the Isle of Man TT course

With a few improvements, including a chassis that is 40 percent stiffer compared to the previous generation, made to the new Subaru WRX STi, Subaru decides to make another trip to the re-known Isle of Man TT to reset a new record. Of course, the best person to do that would be Mark Higgins who also drove for them 3 years ago when Subaru came here in their 2011 WRX STi to set the fastest production record for a car. This time round, he managed to best his previous average speed record of 185.65km/h to hit 189.11km/h with a timing of 19 minutes and 16 seconds on the 59.5km course. So was there anything done to the car? Actually yes. Firstly, its a US specification car and it was fitted with a rollcage and had the speed limiter removed. Then comes springs and dampers that are slightly more robust to make sure the body control remains taut on the bumpy roads. Nothing is official yet, but we hear that the local distributor may be bringing in the four-door bodystyle of the WRX STi. This is good news for the local fans of Japanese sports cars after the dust from the Toyota 86 and Subaru's own BRZ has settled. From the late 90s to the early 2000s, its arch rival - the Mitsubishi Evolution - and itself, carved out a niche for themselves with their boombastic point and shoot performance. Its basic iteration, the Impreza WRX, was easily the best bang for buck performance car in Singapore when the price of COE was low. All the local racing wannabes hankered after one. Fast forward to today, soaring COEs and the onslaught of German hot hatches contributed to the falling appeal of these wonderful rally reps. We are hoping the new four-door body will come soon and allow the newer generation of drivers to taste the magic of these rally-inspired turbocharged AWD sedans. And yes, there may also be a automatic version too for those who prefer a less frantic experience.

Subaru had unveiled the new 2011 (model year) WRX STI 4 door sedan together with the earlier mentioned Impreza WRX sedan version at the 2010 New York Motor Show. The car sports the same wide arches as the hatchback and the trademark tall goal post rear wing. This brings back the look that is recognizable by almost all Subaru enthusiasts as being the quintessential Subaru Impreza STI look.
