  2. A 17 year old Malay teenager stole a private bus at Woodlands Industrial Park E3 yesterday morning at 9am and took the bus for a 155km joyride around Singapore - CCK, AMK, Toa Payoh, Yishun, Boon Lay, Whampoa, Telok Kurau, East Coast Park, Jurong East, Corporation Road, Kian Teck Road and Bukit Batok. An employee of the bus company only discovered the bus missing at 2pm. Luckily the bus has a GPS installed and the location of the bus tracked down very quickly. The bus was eventually recovered at a bus stop along Bukit Batok. . 8. https://www.straitstimes.com/tech/coding-to-be-made-compulsory-for-all-upper-primary-pupils-next-year Enrichment classes on coding for all upper primary pupils next year Hariz Baharudin SINGAPORE - All upper primary pupils will have coding classes from next year, as part of the Government's goal to develop a healthy pipeline of tech talent for the digital economy. Conducted by the Education Ministry and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the 10-hour enrichment programme will be piloted this year at some schools for pupils after their Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), before being rolled out to all primary schools by 2020. Code For Fun (CFF) will seek to develop an appreciation of core computational thinking and coding concepts in pupils, through simple visual programming-based lessons. This was one of several key announcements made by Minister for Communications and Information S. Iswaran at the ministry's workplan seminar, which centred around building a safe and inclusive digital society for Singapore that leaves no one behind. At the seminar on Wednesday (July 10) at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre, the minister also announced the formation of a new specialised telecoms cyber security specialist team, and more efforts to equip Singapore's ageing population with basic digital skills. He also gave an update on government initiatives to help companies digitalise their business. Mr Iswaran said: "We are also reaching out to every enterprise, every worker, and every citizen, so that we can bring all of them, every enterprise regardless of its size, big or small, every worker regardless of education level and every citizen regardless of their tech savviness - bringing them into this overall national effort so that we can build a digital economy that is made up of enterprises that are digitally capable, empowered by workers who are digitally skilled and citizens who are digitally connected." This, he said later, starts from young, and CFF will seek to excite young Singaporeans about the opportunities in the digital age and expose them to the skill sets needed for the potentially lucrative digital economy. In 2016, a study by Oxford Economics and Huawei estimated that the size of the global digital economy amounted to about US$11.5 trillion (S$15.6 trillion) or over 15 per cent of global gross domestic product. And closer to home, a study published by Microsoft last year estimated that the digital economy would contribute another US$10 billion to Singapore's GDP by 2021 to increase the growth rate by 0.6 per cent annually. The Ministry of Communications and Information said in a fact sheet on Wednesday that since CFF was launched as an optional enrichment programme in 2014, it has benefited 93,000 students. It added that the programme will continue at the secondary level as an option to complement existing efforts in computing education, which include computing subjects taken at O Level (elective) and A Level. Mr Iswaran also announced that the Cyber Security Agency (CSA) will be expanding its youth engagement outreach with the Singapore Cyber Youth Programme (SG Cyber Youth), a collaboration with the cyber security industry and academia. This programme will reach out to 10,000 secondary and tertiary students in the next three years to provide them with opportunities to explore cyber security as a career and expose them to relevant technical knowledge and soft skills. It will build on CSA's existing efforts, which include the Youth Cyber Exploration Programme (YCEP) boot camp, a multi-day initiative which aims to introduce secondary school students to the opportunities of a cyber-security career and was started in collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic last year. All five polytechnics are now involved in the boot camp, and this year's edition attracted a turnout of 400 students from over 30 secondary schools coming together to learn about cyber security. Among other new initiatives under the new SG Cyber Youth will be a new advanced-level of the YCEP to be introduced next year, said the MCI. The ministry added that students can also look forward to participating in cyber security learning journeys CSA holds with the Education Ministry and its industry partners, adding that more initiatives will be announced next year.

  11. 'Lucky' stall at Chinatown bazaar goes for $13,899 – highest in six years This is highest in 6 years; stallholders believe the stall is 'lucky' as it is a hotspot for visitors at the Chinatown market A stall at the Chinese New Year festive bazaar in Chinatown next year went for a whopping $13,899 in rental. This is the highest bid in six years. The bid was for the "lucky" stall in the Chinatown Chinese New Year festive street bazaar, which will be held from Jan 18 to Feb 4 next year. Stallholders said the location of the stall at the junction of Smith Street and Trengganu Street is a hotspot for visitors at the market, and thus can bring in the most money. There were three bidders for the "lucky" stall at the 2019 bazaar, and the lowest bid was $2,700. The minimum bid for a stall at the bazaar this year was $1,850. The lucky owner of the stall is Mr Ye Wei Qiang, who has been setting up his stall at the festive bazaar for close to 30 years. He was also the owner of the "lucky" stall this year, which he won with a $8,399 bid. Mr Ye, 55, told The New Paper yesterday: "This year, I decided to up my stakes by $5,500. But I did it without hesitation because I got wind that my competitor had recovered from his sickness and would be bidding this year." He said that he and his rival has been at odds for close to 10 years, and would fight over the "lucky" stall every year. He had lost out to his competitor in the 2017 bazaar. At the bazaar next year, Mr Ye said he will be selling mostly pomelos at his "lucky" stall. His pomelos can range from $6 for a regular pomelo to $12 for a large one. Mr Ye said he will be also renting the stall across the "lucky" stall for about $5,000. This brings the number of stalls he will have at the bazaar to five, managed by him and four other business partners, and bringing his total rental expenditure to at least 20,000. "I rent the space opposite the lucky stall as a backup plan. There were some years I couldn't get the lucky stall, but at least I had the one opposite. "It is very important to get the space near the lucky stall because there is a lot of traffic around that area," he said. Mr Ye will be selling Chinese sausages and other snacks at the opposite stall. Despite the high rent, Mr Ye is confident that he will be able to make a profit. "I make a profit every year, and I have a few other stalls around the bazaar as well. "It is expected that the profit will dip slightly due to the high rent, but we have regular customers, and business is so good at that location. We can sell baskets at one go," he said. Mr Ye added that he sees about $5,000 to $6,000 in profit every year. On regular days, Mr Ye is a durian seller at Katong. The Festive Street Bazaar 2019 is managed by the Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019 Organising Committee, a sub-committee under the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens' Consultative Committee. There will be 313 stalls filling the streets, selling all sorts of food and decorations for the Chinese New Year celebrations. The market will be open from 6pm to 10.30pm from Jan 18 to Feb 3, and from 6pm to 1am on Feb 4, the eve of Chinese New Year. https://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore/stall-chinatown-bazaar-goes-13899-highest-six-years huat ah !
  12. Chinese New Year is coming. Yu Sheng, or Cantonese as lou hei, is one of the main dishes that most people will get to eat during Chinese New Year. Yusheng, yee sang or yuu sahng (Chinese: 魚生; pinyin: yúshēng), or Prosperity Toss, also known as lo hei (Cantonese for 撈起 or 捞起) is a Cantonese-style raw fish salad. It usually consists of strips of raw fish (sometimes salmon), mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments, among other ingredients. Yusheng literally means "raw fish" but since "fish (魚)" is commonly conflated with its homophone "abundance (余)", Yúshēng (魚生) is interpreted as a homophone for Yúshēng (余升) meaning an increase in abundance. Therefore, yusheng is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor. While versions of it are thought to have existed in China, the contemporary version was created and popularised[citation needed] in the 1960s amongst the ethnic Chinese community and its consumption has been associated with Chinese New Year festivities in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Today, the common form of yusheng is the qicai yusheng (七彩鱼生; “seven-coloured raw fish salad”) served in local restaurants during the Chinese New Year period. Also referred to as facai yusheng (发财鱼生; “prosperity raw fish salad”) or xinnian yusheng (新年鱼生; “Chinese New Year raw fish salad”), this colourful take on yusheng was said to be created in the 1960s by chefs Lau Yoke Pui, Tham Yui Kai, Sin Leong and Hooi Kok Wai, together known as the “Four Heavenly Kings” in the Singapore restaurant scene. The recipe included ingredients such as shredded white and green radish and carrots, ginger slices, onion slices, crushed peanuts, pomelo, pepper, essence of chicken, oil, salt, vinegar, sugar and more. To enhance the taste, the chefs began the practice of pre-mixing the sauce in order to ensure a balanced taste for each dish as compared to the past when diners mixed the sauce themselves. This new way of eating yusheng was not readily accepted until the 1970s when younger diners embraced it. From then on, the popularity of this yusheng recipe soared and spread overseas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yusheng So, any good recommendations for good yu sheng this year? And how often do you eat yu sheng during the 2 weeks of Chinese New Year celebrations?

  15. Be wary when you take up the challenge... Facebook Accused of Using '10-Year Challenge' Meme to Improve Its Facial Recognition While the “10-Year Challenge” spreading across social media may appear to be the latest innocuous viral phenomenon, sweeping upwards of 5 million users and multiple celebrities into the challenge, privacy experts and technology analysts are sounding the alarm about the social engineering motives behind the trend. According to the theory, the meme – which calls for Facebook and Instagram (which is owned by Facebook) users to upload a photo of themselves a decade ago alongside their latest photo – was deliberately crafted by Facebook as a means to harvest photos for the sake of improving the social media giant’s facial recognition software and AI machine-learning capabilities, or for Facebook to sell in batches to third-party companies The first writer to lay out the theory in detail was Wired Magazine writer Kate O’Neill, whose sarcastic tweet questioning “how all this data could be mined to train facial recognition algorithms on age progression and age recognition” spread like wildfire after it was posted over the weekend. In a subsequent opinion piece for Wired, O’Neill argued: “Thanks to this meme, there’s now a very large dataset of carefully curated photos of people from roughly 10 years ago and now. … But even if this particular meme isn’t a case of social engineering, the past few years have been rife with examples of social games and memes designed to extract and collect data. Just think of the mass data extraction of more than 70 million US Facebook users performed by Cambridge Analytica.” O’Neil added that “we need to approach our interactions with technology mindful of the data we generate and how it can be used at scale.” The author isn’t alone in her speculation that the meme’s spread could potentially mask the tech giant’s potentially nefarious motives. Amy Webb, a professor and author at NYU Stern School of Business, told CBS News that the viral trend gives Facebook “a perfect storm for machine learning,” adding that the challenge “presented Facebook with a [terrifying] opportunity to learn, to train their systems to better recognize small changes” in users’ facial appearances. Facebook, for its part, has issued a statement distancing itself from the meme’s conception and that it sees no benefit from the challenge, explaining: “This is a user-generated meme that went viral on its own. Facebook did not start this trend, and the meme uses photos that already exist on Facebook. Facebook gains nothing from this meme (besides reminding us of the questionable fashion trends of 2009). As a reminder, Facebook users can choose to turn facial recognition on or off at any time.” Indeed, users are theoretically offered the ability opt-out of the social network’s own facial recognition algorithm through Facebook settings. While Facebook may have nothing to do with the challenge, the fact that Big Data’s motivations are being questioned is a positive sign that social media users are growing increasingly sensitive to the fact that their personal data is being captured, parsed, analyzed, stored, and shared by a network of data brokers, social media firms, and advertisers. Nevertheless, here's my contribution:
  16. Born with 'gasoline in his blood,' GM's Reuss adds president to long list of duties https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/03/gms-reuss-adds-president-keeps-other-assignments.html General Motors named company insider Mark Reuss as president Thursday. The 55-year-old's father also served as GM president nearly three decades ago. Reuss was once seen as a contender for CEO before Mary Barra got the job. Mark Reuss, the global head of General Motors' product development operations, will add "president" to his already expansive list of duties — the latest in a series of management tweaks under CEO Mary Barra. The 55-year-old Reuss – whose father also served as GM president nearly three decades ago – replaces Dan Ammann. Ammann moved over to the company's autonomous vehicle subsidiary, Cruise Automation, last November. But Reuss will assume only some of Ammann's former duties in a paired down role as president, allowing him to retain his current focus on product. Saying that Reuss has played a "critical role" at GM in his current assignment, GM Chairman and CEO Barra added, "Mark's global operational experience, deep product knowledge and strong leadership will serve us well as we continue to strengthen our current business, take advantage of growth opportunities and further define the future of personal mobility." Gasoline in his veins Reuss is wont to say he has "gasoline in his blood." Having trained as an engineer, his duties as product development chief have been as much passion as avocation. It is a job that frequently lets him shed his suit and tie for a helmet and fireproof racing suit while testing new products at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Michigan, an hour northwest of its corporate headquarters along the Detroit riverfront. He joined the automaker in 1983 as a student intern. It was a period of massive change under then-Chairman and CEO Jack Smith. In 1990, as the controversial chairman retired, Mark Reuss's father Lloyd was named GM president, but he held that post only two years before being ousted in the first in a series of activist investor-led revolts. The younger Reuss remained with GM and, over the next two decades served in a broad mix of posts testing his business acumen as well as his engineering skills. That included a run as head of the automaker's long-struggling Australian subsidiary, Holden, which recently shuttered its manufacturing operations. Big break Reuss got his big break in 2001 when he was tasked with creating a new performance division where he got the chance to oversee development of a variety of vehicles, including the Chevrolet Corvette, as well as the reborn Chevy Camaro. While never generating significant volume, those products helped shine GM's star, tarnished by some of the poorly reviewed products it had produced during the 1980s and 1990s, an era when it was sometimes dismissed as "Malaise Motors." But things continued to go from bad to worse for the company saddled with debt and facing ever tougher competition from European and Asian imports. By 2010, GM was forced to enter a carefully managed bankruptcy, surviving only with the help of a massive federal bailout. Most of its top management team, starting with then-Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner, were unceremoniously booted, much as Lloyd Reuss had been nearly two decades earlier. Son Mark was, however, one of the survivors. Plum assignment And he landed a plum assignment that would test both the business and product side of his skills as the new head of North American Operations. By mid-decade, Reuss was seen as a potential contender for CEO. But as Dan Akerson, an industry outsider who joined GM post-bankruptcy, announced his retirement, the job instead went to another top lieutenant. Like Reuss, Mary Barra had also started at GM as a college co-op student and also came from a GM family – though her father was a factory "shop rat." For his part, Reuss got a major consolation prize, heading global product development – a job that frequently leds him shed his suit and tie for a helmet and fireproof racing suit. Last June, he was also named head of Cadillac and has been heavily involved in the development of a stream of new vehicles expected to roll out of the luxury brand every six months through 2021. Too many hats Under his new assignment as president, Reuss will retain those roles, a decision that analyst Joe Phillippi, head of AutoTrends Consulting, questions. Though Reuss is "very talented," Phillippi said, "he had too many hats to start with. There should be someone running product development and that's all they do all day." Whether Reuss might eventually shed some of his duties remains to be seen, but observers say that GM's upper management ranks appear to be in a bit of a flux. If anything, the company had indicated it wasn't going to name a new president when Ammann moved over to Cruise Automation as CEO of the San Francisco-based autonomous vehicle development company last November. For those worried that Reuss may find his time spread thin, a GM spokesman told CNBC that the company's new president won't take over all of the duties that had been on Ammann's plate. Full speed When the former president was reassigned, CEO Barra took over responsibility for managing both the automaker's global regions, as well as its "captive" finance subsidiary, GM Financial. Chief Financial Officer Dhivya Suryadevara, meanwhile, assumed control over GM's corporate development operations. Reuss will take on one new role, overseeing GM's quality control operations which, the automaker noted, dovetails well with his product development duties. Long faulted for reliability issues, GM has, in recent years, made rapid gains, particularly with its Buick and Chevrolet brands, according to studies by outside arbiters such as J.D. Power and Associates. "I am very proud to have spent my entire career at General Motors, and to now take on this new role is truly a great honor," Reuss said in a statement Thursday. "With our current lineup of outstanding cars, trucks and crossovers around the world, I'm looking forward to keeping our momentum going at full speed."

  18. Folks, here are the 10 nominees for this year's prestigious award:- https://www.straitstimes.com/lifestyle/race-is-on Tell me what you think, your views, feedback and some debate would be interesting. You can cast your vote online and ST will reveal the champion on 29 DEC 2018. Sadly, not all cars that were produced in 2018 is in this shortlist. If it was up to me, I would consider ownership depreciation, reliability and NVH. Therefore, I would pick KIA Stinger as the obvious winner. For it's price of having a RWD terrain and a wonderful gearbox, not to mention it's handsome and muscular looks and with a size bigger than the 3 series or Jag XE,it is the most affordable grand tourer/sport sedan in the market right now. Cheers!
  19. Approaching New Year 2019 soon! For car sellers, it means: - meet Dec target, get monthly bonus! - meet Q4 target, get quarterly bonus! - meet H2 target, get 2nd half bonus! - and if meet 2018 target, get big big bonus!!! So they can probably sacrifice profit margin for 1 or few cars just to meet the big big bonus. For car buyers, it means: - more aggressively priced cars due to above points - facelift new cars introduced, older one will go on discounted sale - sometimes even just change of year manufacturing, outgoing year go on discount - get rid of old display units, test units, management units - hoping for COE to drop even further So please share all year end car deals you are aware of, from: - social media ads - newpaper print ads - brochures - roadshow sales Thank you and good luck to all car sellers and buyers! All brands welcome. :)

  25. Usher in the Year of the Dog with a trusted companion - the Mio MiVue 792 There's no need to fear the holiday traffic this Lunar New Year, thanks to the Mio MiVue 792, which will keep an eye out for you in times of need. It's that time of the year again. Buying new clothes, spring cleaning, visiting relatives you only meet once a year, and not forgetting, receiving Ang Baos. That's all fine and dandy until you hit the road. Swarms of vehicles ferry a never-ending supply of Chinese families en route to their reunion dinners, tensions rise, tempers flare and road rage ensues. This makes it nearly impossible for every vehicle to escape a fender-bender during this period. No matter how safe you are as a driver, there will always be one or two nincompoops who aren't paying attention and cause a pileup. Things are about to get ruff The 2018 Lunar New Year marks the end of the Year of the Rooster and the arrival of the Dog Chinese zodiac sign. The Dog is the epitome of loyalty, sincerity and the willingness to help others. It will do everything in its power for the person it thinks is the most important. An in-car dashcam is to a driver what a dog is to its owner - a loyal and trusted companion who will watch his or her back in times of crises. It will look out for potential hazards and warn of impending danger. Top dog Leading the pack is the Mio MiVue 792, the company's top-of-the-line, state-of-the-art dashcam designed to bring law and order to the anarchy we call holiday traffic. With the help of an F1.8, 140-degree wide angle Sony Starvis CMOS sensor, the MiVue 792 is capable of recording full-HD 1920 x 1080p video at 60FPS. This allows Mio's top dog to keep its eye on the prize and never lose sight of its target, which, in this case, refers to errant drivers. The MiVue 792 is no stranger to the darkness either. Being the company's most advanced dashcam to date, it boasts enhanced night time video capability that is comparable to night-vision quality. This is thanks to a top-of-the-range optic sensor with sensitivity that goes beyond visible light and into the near-infrared range. An operating temperature of between -10 degrees Celsius and 60 degrees Celsius ensures this alpha is always ready to pounce in both the blistering heat and in freak monsoon weather. And in case it needs the extra storage, the MiVue 792 is able to support microSD cards with capacities of up to 128GB. Should you wish to have a keepsake of your travels, the 792 features integrated Wi-Fi capabilities, which allow you to transfer your recordings to your smartphone for added storage or simply for sharing your experiences on social media via the MiVue app. Transfer recordings to your smartphone at the touch of a button Dressed to the (ca)nines You may be thinking, "These numbers sure sound impressive, but is that all it can do?" No, the 792 plays the role of watchdog as well, thanks to a host of driver assistance systems such as Lane Departure Warning, Fatigue Warning and Forward Collision Warning. Not only that, the watchdog can keep an eye on where you've been and log your routes in Google Maps via the MiVue Manager, which is a computer programme that allows for video playback, video sharing and directional analysis with the help of the 792's three-axis G-Sensor. The sensor detects sudden changes in motion and will instantly save a protected file that can't be overwritten in the unfortunate event of a crash. And just like the Mio MiVue 658 Wi-Fi, the MiVue 792 comes with parking mode recording, which records while the car is parked. This, of course, requires the MiVue Smart Box Cable. It is an optional add-on purchase, monitors the amperage of the car's battery and cuts off the power when it drops below a pre-set value. This is a failsafe that the guys over at Mio have come up with to ensure the dash cam doesn't drain your car battery while it is parked overnight. With the help of the MiVue Smart Box Cable, the MiVue 792 is able keep a lookout even when you're not there The Mio MiVue 792 comes as a standalone front-facing dashcam, with the option to add on the MiVue A30 rear camera. The optional MiVue A30 rear camera is as good as having eyes in the back of your head https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3FdBmj3GL8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfuY6EOepl0 Distributed by: NaviCom Technology Pte Ltd Click for List of Authorised Dealers For more information on the Mio MiVue 792, please visit the Mio website.
