Gear shifter broke...this time worse

Its not the first time that the gear shifer broke. It has failed on me twice already. Different linkage bar I understand... Usually, when the linkage bar breaks, I cannot engage 1st, 2nd, 5th and reverse gear. Can only engagge 3rd and 4th, so not so bad. Can still get to a safe place before I call the tow truck.

On Friday, the unthinkable happened. The gear shifter broke (again) but this time, I could not engage any gear at all. I was in free gear. This happened on the ECP heading towards Changi Airport just after the Benjamin Shears bridge, before Fort road. Was stuck in the 2nd lane. Paiseh man...

did anyon'e gear shifter break that many times??!!

Hi P,

Sorry to hear that this happen again for you.

As per your post, you mention that it is a different linkage bar.

In the past, we would change the linkage rods (whole assembly - 2 pcs) at one shot to prevent similar incident. Previously, I think I replaced mine at @ 80000km before such incident happen.

Unfortunately, it is a common "tear and wear" problem on that rod using the 02A trans on the Tody.

It is not really very expensive and for the rest of the Manual folks (Octy bros), you may want to do a preventive maintenance.

yeah, even the cordy (and Xsara) had such problems! Tho' it may not cost much to replace, but its the "stuck in the traffic" that's pissing. [furious]

sounds quite bad.. wasn't specified by manufacturer on this linkage-rods replacement.

How much does it cost,or what prev maint can be done?

Either that or I hard drive too much? Haha. Not very expensive, think all teh link bars cost 200+ in total. Was informed by Servo that my bars all look prety new...so guess I'm safe for a while more.....Jsut that the last 2 times it cost me $60 for parts and labour. Towing was another 60.... So its the silly towing actually...

Hi Coke21

Mine also broke the previous weekend

got it towed back to servo and it was almost 5.30pm on Sat

forunately servo was able to repair it in time and the car did not need to stay in the workshop

Think this is a common problem for Vag cars because also met another one with the same problem a month back

Hi, hope you can enlighten me on this, am driving a Skoda too. Experienced this in my old Alfa 33, where the drop pin came off and I lost all gear or stuck in gear. Do you mean that the link broke or the pin came off. Thanks.

If you get the parts from XinZhong, it's definitely cost me less than $150 for all the parts back then.

Cost another few tens $$$ for Servo to get the job done.

BTW, regardless of your style of driving, it's a tear and wear part so sure give way. It's a matter of time.

Maybe that stretch of road is cursed because my shifter broke at almost the same location as yours! Hah hah.

Prudent to one shot change all no matter how new they looked. And maybe you can sign up for AAS membership. I remembered I towed my car twice within 2 weeks because the gear shifter broke.

Know what? The exact same thing happened to me recently in my Focus. I engaged third, heard a crunch, and the next thing I knew I was free gearing. Fortunately I had just turned off the TPE, so I coasted to a nearby bus stop.

Turned out a cable in the linkage broke, but they had to change the entire assembly [:|] The parts were $300 and the labour at Regent another $300 [knife]

a bit worried...is this a common trait of conti cars?

the manual didn't state that this is a wear and tear part..... never heard of this with my prev jap cars even though i really whack the gears hard ...something they could learn from the japs maybe?

Hey buddy, similarly here, am very surprise to hear this. Hence I was asking is it the rod that broke or and the pin the link the rods that broke. The later do happen to any cars, the former...I am concerned.

Same here. Hope it will not happen to me. Somehow I feel that, today maintenance by many do not grease those points, hence the stress and failure, I am guessing here.
