Nikolaiski Neutral Newbie July 13, 2008 Author Share July 13, 2008 huh? what is 1.4L? this car was a 1.6 turbo - same engine as the mini cooper S with a 4 speed auto

Bearbear1494 Clutched July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 Personally, I feel that this is a rather incomplete review. What about the NVH, fit & finish, interior room? Any particular design flairs on the inside? While I understand that this car is supposed to be made for the enthusiastic driver, there are other factors that help decide whether or not this car is "Can consider" or "Pass, next.". In any case, if the drive & handling of this car is indeed so dismal, I'd gladly take the Golf 1.4TSi any day. Note to self : Strike the lottery. Now. Sunrise Neutral Newbie July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 Huh? Not the same engine as MCS. 175bhp vs 140bhp.
Sunrise Neutral Newbie July 14, 2008 Share July 14, 2008 The 308 is really not for the enthusiasts. (There is a 308 GT with 175 bhp - the MCS engine, but looks like it is not coming to SG.) The 308 is strictly speaking not a new model; it is actually based on the 307 chasis and continues with the same winning strategy of 307. Compared to the 307, the 308 looks prettier, has a better finished interior. Like the 307, it has a comfy ride with good control and reasonable level of kit and price. In evaluating a car, what's important is fitness for purpose. The 308 does give people who looking for a affordable and chic looking conti ride what they want. The 4-speed autobox is indeed a weakness. But many of these customers do not mind. Agree with you that the review is skewed and imcomplete
Furrynadz 5th Gear July 14, 2008 Share July 14, 2008 if u see most of mr amery ruben's reviews on french sluts, most are degrading them to the point of "almost same same as annabel chong, except different name"
Nikolaiski Neutral Newbie July 14, 2008 Author Share July 14, 2008 (edited) er, sorry, i didn't write this -grin- but I did get to drive it for a while on a separate occasion but i have to say that i like the non turbo-ed one better because it doesn't frustrate the driver and show weaknesses. eh, but Furrynadz, I beg to differ. With the exception of the transmission, I really liked the Renault Clio III 1.6 (http://www.sgcarmart.com/news/review.php?AID=46&PN=1)despite the lateness of the model, and I did enjoy the Citroen Grand Picasso. Not so much the 5 seater lah, but then again, I hope you guys can see that we are offering our honest opinions, and I have come to realize that whatever I write, there are going to be differing reactions, and that is what I like about everyone in MCF :) Of course, in this case, the mentioned Golf doesn't look as good as the 308 for that matter lah. As for NVH, the 308 isn't very different from the 307. Rest assure it is a quiet riding car, on par with VW Golfs, Renault Meganes and so on. Firstcall Clutched July 14, 2008 Share July 14, 2008 That Christopher from ST writes v good review for 308 a couple of weeks ago...he said the car is v torquey and fast... anyway I can never understand why the french (including Renault) can tolerate such hopeless gearbox after so many complains about it? bI'm sure they can easily source for a better one elsewhere. Paddie 3rd Gear July 15, 2008 Share July 15, 2008 The 'hopeless' French gearbox was actually a joint design between PSA and Renault, which is why it appears in so many Peugeot, Citroen and Renault cars. Although it performs badly in urban driving (and is also very unreliable after a few years), it's not so bad on the open road because it's smart enough to downshift when braking and going down hills, it knows when to hold on to a lower gear when you want to overtake, etc. So I can understand why buyers in Europe don't complain so much about it. But yes I agree, for our kind of driving conditions it's quite hopeless.

Watwheels Supersonic July 15, 2008 Share July 15, 2008 (edited) Their so call gearbox is the ZF gearbox from Germany. It's just that their(French) programming on the upshift and downshift is disappointing in terms of performance.
