yes 40km/L is what they claim.

but it is impossible to hit those kind of figures.

just ask those around who are driving a hybrid.

their method of test FC probably involved a lot of low speed driving, hence more of the time is using the electric motor rather than the petrol motor, hence giving higher FC figures.

Yeah if you go travel at expressway speed, the battery can barely last you for a couple of minutes. In the local context, we do encounter quite a fair bit of stop start traffic so buying a hybrid actually makes some sense. But I doubt the fuel efficiency of a hybrid will be much better than a good diesel.

It is disappointing that Toyota continues to use metal hydride batt in the new generation Prius when the German has moved on to the lighter and more efficiency Li-ion. This new car can hardly be deemed as a game changer like the current generation Prius.

Nothing to be surprised. Cars like these are built with respect to their bottomline. Li-on batteries are too expensive to be justified on a production car of this class.

Also, li-on batteries have a tendency to catch fire when breeched, so additional reinforcement is needed to be incoporated into the mounting design to prevent such occurance. Hence more costs.

Heck if cost is not a concern, they would be using lithium Polymer batteries instead.

Turbocharged

Top Gear tested before..under spirited driving conditions(meaning high speed, high acceleration)..a Prius drinks more fuel than a BMW M3.. [rolleyes]

Yeah cars like the Prius are built to a price. But then we must also consider the fact that this technology will also be used in Lexus, which competes in the same arena as the Germans. Well, unless they come up with a different system for Lexus?

Lexus hybrids uses same concepts & technologies as Toyota's system, although the former is marketed under "Lexus Synergy Drive", to differentiate from Toyota's "Hybrid Synergy Drive".

It seem green car are the future trend

It has to be. If not now, then when?

I think its a great time now for auto makers to have a strategic make-over during this time of economy uncertainty and at the same time having to deal with future climate-chnage certainties. CO2 emission isn't falling nor will current oil price in the foreseeable future.

I look forward to the day when hybrid becomes a standard feature in all automobile plus lesser city urban noise pollution.

The strong "Prius~ish"-look partly due to the same hatch-backayout and intentional as Toyota wants to retain the unique look as they found many hybrid owners wants to destinct theyselves from other non-hybrids as being more "eco-concious".

That said, the major changes will be internal. That includes larger ICE capacity (1.5 to 1.8l), larger cabine space and a new c~ockpit layout.

There are also speculation of switching to lithium-ion batteries and PHEV models in later variants once the former's safety requirements is met .
