hi, just wanna ask you guys here a few questions.

1. any difference in getting the car from PI or from agent? the price difference is a lot between PI and agent, just wondering if the warranty is really necessary? cuz for VW so many electronics and I read somewhere that the mechatronics unit in DSG is a potential failure point. Currently, I own a Toyota Wish bought from PI as Borneo didn't bring in Wish then and the car is trouble-free. Before that, owned an Opel Astra, but since that car is quite mechanical, nothing that outside workshops cannot handle.

2. How much does it cost to service a VW both for normal service and the major intervals? Are there outside workshops that are able to service VW and do the necessary checks and reset for the onboard electronics.

3. Will insurance be higher?

I'm thinking of the Scirocco 1.4TSI for its sporty look, fuel efficiency and I don't really need an MPV. My father previously owned a BMW eons ago and the servicing price range from 300-500 each time and at the 5th year, the gearbox change cost 10k! This really scares the hell out of me if maintaining a conti car cost that much.

Appreciate your advice...

Hi Guys,

I want to bring up this thread for advise.

My Dad's car COE is going soon this year and I'm abit headache for a 2nd hand car.

2 solutions I'm looking now:

1) Buy a pre-owned Lancer GLX or Altis for him

2) Buy a pre-owned car for myself, pass my Colt to Dad

For (2), I particularly looking at MK5 Golf GTI, specifically I got a good lobang from a client. May take over his ride.

Anyone MK5 GTI drivers/owners here?

Can advise if this car can keep more than 10 years AKA renew COE for it?

Any known mechanical problem I should be prepared for or check? I know the initial batch has DSG issue (Not the same as the 7DSG issue that plaque current 1.4 VW cars) but the later batch should be ok. The car I may take over is an 08 car.

Thanks for the advise!!

Hi Mate, good choice for renewal 👍

I particularly like this MK5 2.0L, so far Nvr heard of much problem on this engine. Of course if the previous owner does the regular servicing n parts change then it Shld last another good 10yrs with on going parts change (wear n tear).

As for workshop, most will recommend VAG (look for Chan), but there r many more VW specialist out there. Some other like HAT, Godspeed, Etc. They will assist to do a assessment to ur purchase with a small cost (don't know how much).

All the best 😄👍

Thanks for the advise. I drove the car around today, felt ok to me. I might PM you further if I confirm my purchase.

Now there are a few factors holding me back, mainly:

- It's a PI car.

- my OC is not convinced I should spend the money now than waiting later. The stigma of preowned cars is still bothering her.

- the prospect of renewing the COE at 2018. I might end up paying much more at the end of the day.
