Trex101 3rd Gear July 11, 2009 Share July 11, 2009 Mileage is more than how many km is not recommand for the usage of w20 or even w30? Can advise? thx Depends on your engine condition really, i had use w20 oil on my previous Honda till around 200k km(start when mileage around 50k) also no issue. There's no oil consumption until around 200k when it start to consume abt 1/4qt per 10k, so by then i decided to switch to a thicker w30 and oil consumption stop. Hi Terence, my car is hitting 3 year mark and may enter into the 70k mileage zone very soon. I am currently using 0W30 full synthetic oil. Can I still continue to use the same 0W30 oil or should I switch to W40 grade? How do I check on the engine condition? UOA? Kb27 Supersonic July 13, 2009 Share July 13, 2009 I would continue using 0w30 until you start losing oil. Or you might try high mileage oil which is supposed to condition oil seals.
Weiming 1st Gear July 13, 2009 Share July 13, 2009 As long as you are not topping up oil on a regular basis, you can stick to the current weight oil. Your engine is still considered fresh especially if it has been maintained properly. My own mileage is now 270k km and I am on fully syn 5w30 but will be switching to 5w40 for better protection due to age of engine. A good article on what UOA is: BITOG Article on UOA

I might try this route. Checking oil dipstick and topping fluids/water is part and parcel of my weekly maintenance.

OIC, changing to higher W oil only required when the engine start to consume the oil..thx In another words, does that mean we can top up the oil even it only reaches the lower line of the dip stick and not necessary to reach the upper line of the dip stick as long as we don't observe any oil being consume before the next servicing? Like what Kb27 and Weiming said, you can continue using w30 oil until you notice any oil consumption. 70k is pretty young so i would worries abt it. Actually, 70k millage is not really high. any W30 oil should be able to be use unless ur car is TC. A lot of people have misconception that lower oil velocity means higher wear n tear and vice versa. This is not wrong, but may not applicable in Singapore. Most of the wear n tear happens during cold start. Oil with lower velocity give a better protection during this stage cause the oil is much thinner and free flowing in the engine even before the engine is warmed up. High velocity oil, on the other hand, gives a better protection to TC car and car driven in some countries like US, Aus and canada where the travelling distance is many times higher than Singapore (easily 100km from one town to another). As a result, lower volocity oil is not only giving us beter FC, it may also gives a better protection to your engine if your driving style is just like any average sinagporean car. ps: in the 1st place, do not worry about the engine wear n tear, we can only drive our car for 10yrs and if you follow the oil changing interval as recomended by manufacturer, its unlikely ur engine is gg to give u any trouble (unless u mod ur car heavily). it is more likely for some accessories or parts like aircon, power window, transmission, alternator & etc that will fail on you 1st. Yes, piston ring wear is one of a good indicator of the engine condition as long as you are using a "branded or reputable" oil.
