At what age do you trust your child to travel alone?

When do you think a child is old enough to travel alone by himself or herself using public transport? Is 10 old enough? Will you be very worried?

I should think it depends very much on the character of the child. If they are the playful & dis-obedient type...... then I'd not have peace of mind.... since they might get into trouble without supervision.

My daughter is 10 and I am not ready to let do it on her own, yet.

 

By 12, at P6, I think it is time to let her take the short bus trip to and from school alone. To get ready for the longer and further journey to secondary school. But I would ensure proper advice is given on the safety aspects of crossing the road, at the bus-stops, strangers in the busses and what to do in times of emergencies.

 

I have a younger boy however, and I'll probably let him take the bus trip alone a year or so sooner.

Last time at my old company, the GM's son (around Pri 4 or 5) took the bus by himself and got lost. When the GM asked where he was, the boy said he don't know. When the GM asked what landmarks are nearby, the boy cannot recognize any. In the end, the GM rushed off to do a search and rescue himself. I hear already also cold sweat.

i started walking to kindergarten myself which was about 500m away. Started taking public bus when i was 8, if i rem correctly.

One of my colleague stationed in China do that to his son. His son 5 years old travel from SG to shanghai alone. However the airline was informed and airline personels are there to take care of him on flight and clearing the immigration too.

depends on the whole process, eg, does he need to cross any roads, how far is the bus stop from his destination etc.

 

if u wanna start with some training, maybe can arrange a short journey to a relative's place. u bring him to the bus-stop/MRT and get the other party to meet him at bus-stop/MRT. Then slowly let go from there. Nowadays so convenient...like got handphone so can give him a ring near the expect time of arrival in case he fall asleep on the bus and miss stop.

 

so back to your question...think 10 yrs old is quite ok...shd be able to follow instructions

My daughter is P4 now and I started to let her take public transport when she comes back from school. In the morning, my CO drives and send her. I think it is not so much due to age but the senses/maturity they give you.

I start going to school on my own wif my twin brother since Pri 3, 9yrs old then. We are year end babies so still 9yrs old.

 

We walk to school, crossing six lane road(Thomson Road), early in the morning. After school, we took ten cent bus to nanny's place. After work my mum come to my nanny place and pick us up and we go home together.

 

But sometimes my bro n I will take the ten cent bus at the opposite direction. Just seat onboard and go one big round to the other terminal and then back to my nanny's place.

These days far too many horror stories in the news (molest, accident, robbery, bullying, etc.) such that many parents are reluctant to let the kids venture out alone too early. Car is common among families these days so guess most parents may as well just give them a ride instead.

My Mom always says to me..... As long as you are not married, to the parents, you are always a kid. So we can understand what a parent can worry about when they are out in the street.

I started walking home from school around 9 years old (school and home walking distance).

 

At 10 can take school bus.

 

At 12 I know how to take public transport by myself.

 

Parents are busy working, so no choice, learn by myself. I've always been quite independent anyway.

i first took bus alone when i'm 8 to school for ECA.. then travel on bus to ipoh, malaysia at 9, joins my uncle in HK at abt 10.. got pretty big sis hold my hand to clear immigrations
