External HDD recovery!! need help!

Need some help,

 

friend's laptop suddenly shut off while connected to the external HDD and now the external HDD got some problem.

 

anyone can advise how to recover the data or something?

 

 

any help will be greatly appreciated guys.

some additional info,

 

the HDD is the small portable type.

 

Thing is, there is no mechanical sound ( last time when i dropped my hdd and it died, it made a loud whining sound and other sh1t sounds)

 

This one, when u plug it into the com, the com detects the device, and after a LONG time, it will appear in my computer, but we can access the drive.

 

I was thinking is is possible to use the computer to " clean up" the hdd, cos there was once on my friend's external hdd, part of it had some problems, and when i plugged it into my laptop one day and powered up my laptop, my laptop detected the hdd and went into the " clean up" mode or something,m and everything was fine later.

 

Any recommendations or help is appreciated guys.

If the hdd is still detectable in Windows, there is still hope.

 

You can try to boot up the your machine in command prompt and run chkdsk on the HDD. This will check the volumes in the hdd for problems and try to fix them. Some HDD can recover thru this method.

 

If that still cannot fix HDD, please PM me for other solutions.
