Canon would have more lens to choose from. In the end, it would be you who are using, so you'll need to find your requirements. If you are not thinking of getting more lens, then go for a S95/ G12, which gives fantastic pictures

When come to DSLR, the only diffcult part is to choose between Nikon and Canon. So TS, if your choice is between Sony and Canon DSLR then this is easy.

For digital compact camera, my one and only choice is Canon. No more Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, Samsund, Fujifilm, Olympus ... etc. I had enough of them.

If you want high HD video with high zoom. Then you should reconsider buying video camera instead of still camera.

i have a canon 40D. the thing i don like about canon is it doesnt have auto face detection or smile detection like sony

it is really handy to have auto face detection or smile detection if your primary focus is kids, no need to change the focusing point

I never seen the image quality from both camera before.

But, based on what I read, in term of great imaging quality, the best compact camera has yet to catch up with the entry level DSLR, with the same megapixel cat. ISO100-200, the compact can still match the DSLR but, ISO400, 800, no match all.

So, if you do a lot of outdoor shooting and need high zoom, a high zoom compact might be better for your.

But if you like to shoot indoor, you need dslr.

You should stretch your budget a little bit and go for Canon 550D. It has very good image quality, good HD video and some zoom (depending on your budget).

Supercharged

I might sound bias.

Go for Sony. Traditionally, Canon and Nikon dominate DSLR market, but it doesnt mean they are the best. They are just more popular due to other reasons

Another brand u can think of is Pentax. They are not popular not because they are no good, but because it doesn't do crazy marketing campaigns. Their picture quality are among the best

If you get Sony, you can use Minolta lenses, coz Sony bought over Minolta and using Minolta tech. If you do homework, you will know that Minolta cam tech is top-notch.

The good thing abt Sony is the Image Stablilisation is built in body. So your lenses will be cheaper and lighter.

And Sony cam comes with 2 different memory card slots, one for SD card and one for Sony memory sticks

Btw, most will suggest canon or nikon as they have been ard for a while. You have to see which fits your needs. Buying an SLR is actually unlike buying a normal digicam. It's effectively buying a system i.e. different lens to suit diff occasions. Those one size fits all lens may not be good indoors or for portraits and have narrow aperture sizes and limitations, even if they do, it will prob cost you a bomb. $799 can only get you a set with standard kit lens. If you are looking at sony a33, you have to look at 2nd hand with that budget.

You also have to see if you need video recording. DSLRs these days mostly come with full HD recording but even then the auto-focusing mechanisms differ a lot, unless you only want manual focus then there's not much diff. Check out the diff between canon and sony here:

, nikon d3100 video

Other considerations include whether there's optical stabilisers in cam or otherwise you have to purchase those lens with stabilisers, noise levels, whether there's face detection or other user-friendly modes..
