Ser Miang slams Low

GUANGZHOU - SINGAPORE'S Asian Games chef de mission Low Teo Ping has been slammed by one of local sport's most senior figures over his remarks about the sailing federation's selection policy.

 

Mr Ng Ser Miang, who is patron of SingaporeSailing and like Mr Low, a past president of the association, slammed Mr Low on Sunday for his 'callous remarks', which he said had devastated the team.

 

This is believed to be the first time a senior sports official has been publicly rebuked by another high-ranking official over their handling of an issue during a major Games. Both Mr Ng and Mr Low are vice-presidents of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC).

 

A day earlier, Mr Low had blamed the keelboat team's failure to win a medal at the ongoing Asian Games on SingaporeSailing's policy of having open selection trials. He questioned if the best sailors were picked. During his tenure, the 2006 team, who won the title in Doha, had been hand-picked by coaches. But their successors finished fifth out of eight teams here.

 

Mr Ng, whose last term as head of the sailing body was from 1989 to 1991, told The Straits Times last night that he was 'saddened and perturbed' by Mr Low's attack on the selection system.

 

'Mr Low's outburst cast aspersions on the new leadership of SingaporeSailing and demeans the achievements of our sailors, who have given their best for the country - whether they win medals or not,' he said in a phone call from Norway.
