Bad Cough! Bad Cough!

You mentioned after years of treatment? For nose or throat? What type of treatment you been through?

Think my itchiness and uncomfortable feeling in my throat which trigger coughing only 'appear' at night! As a result cant sleep at night! This feeling don't really appear during the day time! Thinking how long does i need to endure this? Like now my throat is feeling uncomfortable and it will last throughout the night!

My kid was treated by KK for years for his sensitive nose (initially for asthma as the symptoms can be quite similar). ie. Nasal spray and the usual medications. We controlled dust, used air purifier, bought new mattress and cleaned it regularly and try to keep the room as clean as possible. It helped. He has since outgrown the problem.

As I have mentioned earlier, if your cough is at night, before meals (empty stomach) and dry in nature, it could also be due to acid reflux. The acid juice/gas from your stomach flows up your throat and triggers the persistent coughs. Do an endoscope if necesary or trying to cut back on coffee, tea and spicy foods to reduce the acidity in your stomach, it may help for mild cases.

Again, I am not medically trained, so just sharing from experience.

Yes, I do have sensitive nose too due to sinus since young from gene. however, never encounter plenty of phlegm which resultant to cough since 3 year ago. I have been using nasal spray since then.

but still, it can't reduce my phlegm. The next thing is to cut down coffee and spicy food but I couldn't live without both :D

Even the HOD of ENT has treated me for the 1st year but useless. They have made me go surgery to remove my tonsils too.

All is a waste of my time, money and ordeal from test and surgery

The TCM, recommend from here, comment is that when one is getting old, their body condition change. last time didn't have such sickness doesn't mean future will not get it. Stupid answer [laugh]

I can attest that sensitive nose can make one more prone to flu and cough. Affected cells causes mucus production to increase and the backflow can lead to persistent cough, especially at night. Am not medically trained, just sharing my kid's experience. After years of treatment, he has outgrown the problem. Good luck.

Turbocharged

I have been seeing ENT specialist for the past 3 years due to chronic cough. It started after I have a fever. I cough becuase throat irritate by Phlegm. During this 3 years, they changed 3 specialist [laugh]. My phlegm can go aways when took medication, but come back again once complete.

Have done all the stupid test like you mentioned to check for TB, reflux and so on. They think I am so rich and free to pay them for trial and error [confused]

In the end, told me is due to allergy. Must clean and change aircon fitler, must change bed shit every week etc.

I have never ending phlegm. how could phlegm cause by the above?

btw, I have also visited the TCM that was recommended here during the begininig, before seeing ENT specialist, but is also a waste of my time and money

I think mine almost same as yours. Seen ENT, went for scope blah blah many years back. Nothing detected. It just keep coming back maybe one to three times per year. Quite disturbing for me.

So many sick birds same as me. [smallcry] I will also experience my customary "100 day cough" once a year, usually starting from late dec, or after cny period. Last year did lots of tests, x rays, scopes etc. Still did not help much. In the end it just went away by itself.

For this year, it's after CNY period. Have visited doc twice, taken the usual meds. The phlegm is lesser now, but still got the urge to cough, like irritation in the lung/airway. Like want to cough out something stuck, but in the end spit out saliva. I try not to over cough, and damage the membranes. Last time the doc advise excessive coughing will hurt the membrane, same for blocked or running nose last time I always blow so hard until headache. Now just clear it if necessary, the more you blow, the more it will come back. Doc also say that everyone will have phlegm, sinus in their body, cannot be all clear. So from my past experience I will just leave it alone, let it self heal. Hopefully it will be gone by April.

Sometime when I cough too much in the gym, the gym instructor will ask me to leave. Scare I spread some diease [laugh]

biggest ordeal is few month back where I cough until my voice box damaged. I have no voice at all for a period of time. ENT put me on sedate to extra cell from my voice box to confirm not TB or cancerous.

Now still in the mist of waiting it to be completely heal. However, it took longer time as I have been coughing now and then due to irritating phlegm.

For those who have established 'allergy' as the cause of their cough, perhaps have to look into dietary causes as well; besides focusing on keeping their environment clean.

old people say "dirty eat dirty big (strong)".

some people clean too clean, used "push through" rods like cleaning rifle to clean their mouth/throat, depleting off layers of protective films/scums.

I meant the type of food/ drink one consumes, eg. may not be aware as the effect is non life threatening or insidious.

Some pple I knew have increased mucus secretions from their sinuses when they take eggs or oranges regularly (daily).

Chicken meat stimulates mucus production too; that's why it's known to be good for pple who fall ill....to relieve the dryness in their throat.

Certain herbal infusion (Luo Han Kuo) or natural product (honey) has the same properties too......soothes dryness or sore throat. Not to say these named products are bad.......they are beneficial when taken for the correct/appropriate reasons.

Thought when you have cough, don't eat chicken?

Anyway, think there are few types of cough, dry, heatness or cold cough etc. Must see which type of cough and adjust your diet accordingly?! If not, your cough will become worse?
