Noa_higs Neutral Newbie March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 hi guys i've discovered a crack on the treads of one of my tyres. it's about 5mm deep and 5-6cm long, doesn't extend to the sidewalls and the tyre hasn't been losing pressure abnormally. the tyres are just about 2 yrs old and travelled about 20k. my question is whether i need to replace them? i know sidewall cracks are a definite no go but anyone has any advice on this tyre tread crack? my main worry is a blowout halfway while driving! thanks guys! ↡ Advertisement

Nocash Neutral Newbie March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 For safety reasons, better to change new one. Better be safe than sorry!
Heartbreakid 6th Gear March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 Depending on how serious it is. Sometimes, the effect happens over a slow period of time. If the crack is deep enough to penetrate the steel construction within the tyre, it might cause the structure failure and bulge might occur and result in tyre burst. SimonTan 2nd Gear March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 Water will rust the steel belt. Also if emergency brake, at the exact part. It might peel open the rubber, causing the car to skid. I would change it. But I seldom check my tyre....ignorance is bliss for me.

Yoongf 4th Gear March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 I used to have a similar issue.. about tyre safety. Initially I thot just leave it. But I realise.. I started to inspect the tyre daily to make sure things din get worse. It was a phychological baggage, that I then decided.. why bother, just change and move on to focus on more important stuff. It really wasn't about the tyre safety.. more of a phychological decision.

Grimicer Clutched March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 (edited) tyres are the most important if not, the only contact of your car on the road. don't risk your life, or your passenger, or family member lives by saving on the 20k of tyre travel. you never know and if things are preventable, do it! to add on, there has been blowouts resulting in drivers wrecking their rims, or cars. too much at risk to save 20k of tyre travel. Can share with us what brand/tread pattern your tyre? Check with the tyre shop on any warranty for carcass failure, it seems to be carcass failure to me (tyre can suddenly burst). All of 5 stock tire burst on my second (new)car. 3 of them while driving car.
