How many times has a traffic light turned yellow as you approach an intersection, and you are uncertain if you can make the light or not? To speed or slam brake?

What is really our best choice? [hur]

Timings of yellow light are different at each junction, i've experienced some as short as 2 seconds, once yellow come out, it will jump to red on next blink. Kinda stressful whenever passing a green light that has been on for quite some time. I prefer seeing a red light that is on for very long. And as i reach, it will turn green [laugh]

Will it be better to have those LED timing indicators for cars (like in some countries), showing how long before the light will turn red? Maybe we can petition for them [:p]

Agree. I saw many digital timers at traffic lights in Malaysia.

They tried those countdown timer before but find it not helpful..

On the amber light note, when u r in such circumstances, most likely you are above speed limit already ... most of time if moving within speed limit, you won't have to make such a tough decision but some traffic light is a pain in the ars...

Agree. Try hypermiling next time?

I thought this is taught in driving lessons?

Before every traffic light junction there are 3 arrows within each lane. Should you cross the 2nd arrow as the lights turn yellow, you are safe to clear the crossing; else you should just brake.

You can be his driving refresher Instructor?

Thanks for the refresher. Uncle like me passed TP >20years ago. Memory faded..

Or maybe last time TP no topic about traffic light. [laugh]

Do not worry. If you are learning, you are living (laugh)

So far so good, even without the arrows (during the road works)

arrows or lines? i thot we're referring to the (usually) 3 white lines drawn perpendicular to the road at the traffic lights.

my driving instructor used to tell me use 2 arrows stop rule when traffic light turn amber....that's when you are travelling at 60-70km/h. Quite useful.

OMG, I been driving for years and didn't even know about the purpose of these arrows [bigcry]

Sometime, if there are vehicles very close behind, very worried if I stop for the amber light, simply for the fear of rear-ended by them.

Personally, I find those traffic light countdown timer very useful : telling motorists xx seconds to RED, and telling other motorists xx seconds to GREEN and get ready for move-off.

Eh.. maybe i'm too old, my driving instructor then never tell me such things [sweatdrop]

Wonder if this is applicable in malaysia as well... [hur]

When I am at the last arrow, its amber or the last green arrow...

Normally, i would move on....

Cos, the speed which i am travelling may not stop in time (behind the stop line)...

My method, I see the number of cars on other traffic lights waiting to turn green.

If got more than 3 cars, I will slow down and anticipate the amber light to happen.

But of coz, no 100% accurate.

It is lesser problems if you can stop even though the light is amber, especially in JB CIQ area. The chances of being stopped by the MY TP is higher.

Neutral Newbie

I thought got sensors on the floor, when the thing amber, if they sense got no weight on the floor, they turn red faster. If got car, they extend amber like 1 second+ for the car to pass? :o
