GST theory

There are gst credits to offset the gst suffered by the poor and the rich doesn't feel the tax paid when they suffer gst.

Why not implement a multi-tier GST regime in the first place that varies the rate imposed by the receipt amount? The more you spend, the more you contribute to the GST pool.

That idea is sound in principle but remember, how are you going to enforce it? How are you going to ensure people are going to be honest with their declared income? Enforcement will be difficult and worrisome.

Neutral Newbie

they can talk all they want about helping the poor. The moment they wanna increase the president's salary by 800k, all credibility is lost.

so how much of this GST is used to pay the top officials? they are already earning millions, why do they still want more money? Not enough to spend?

Yes....talk only...but action speak louder !

just to add on, this was mentioned and discussed during the budget debate last week by Shanmugam, the reason was given in his speech. No matter how much we reduce the gst, even to 0%, the needy and poor still need help. No way a reduction in gst means the govt no longer need to help them. A simple gst collected from sales of luxury goods can amount to a lot of money which in turn will help the needy more significantly . by reducing the gst we are only helping the rich to get richer

I think you mean Shanmuganatha, the finance guy?

Shanmugam is the home affairs and law guy.

actually the most ridiculous tax is the Tax on Tax applied in the PUB Bill.

They charge Water Conservation Tax of 30%.

Then charge a GST 7% on this Tax.

W.T.F.!!!

Granted it's a small amount per household.. but multiply this by the whole country - and we are again counting in millions!

the rich spend more. the poor spend lesser.

since the rich spend more, they pay more in gst than the poor. then the govt will use $$ collected from gst to help the poor. that's the theory the govt gave.

i dun quite agree nor understand it well. a simple solution is to reduce the gst to 5%. then we do not need to use gst $$ to help the poor. right? or am i missing something?

GST 7% nia also complain. U got see other country's service tax bo. Please la
