HTC vs Samsung vs SE

Hey everyone, i knw that these 3 all have different hp models. But what I would like to know is, generally, how these 3 companies fare in terms of reliability/user-friendliness (of their phones), service support (e.g. updates) and also apps (i only knw that samsung has its own app stores, what about the rest?).

 

Headache, wanna change hp also don knw which to choose..

Want fast hardware.... go dual core.... only LG 2X for now. Upcoming is Galaxy S2 or the LG 3D..... but, but but.... whether the softwar is fast or not is another thing hor......

I'm assuming this is for android phones. Well, reliability all three seem ok, though from what I'm hearing, HTC is either a hit or miss (my htc phones have worked flawlessly though).

 

For ease of use, its about the same for all. There's only so much you can do to android. A lot of people do like HTC's Sense UI though, and Samsung not using a native Linux file system is the cause of its lagginess at times. Nothing that won't be fixed by the blokes at XDA developers though.

 

For apps it really doesn't matter. The Android Market is more than sufficient.

 

Update wise, HTC seems to be most prompt, followed by Samsung. SE had a bad rep, but for the new phones, they're saying they want to be one of the first to offer updates so they have basically skinned the UI only, and stuff like their timescape and mediascape are now widgets instead of being incorporated into the UI.

Actually i am currently looking at the SE Xperia Arc, LG optimus 2X, HTC Incredible S and the Galaxy S 4gb. 1st 3 are abt the same price with e last one $150 cheaper. So was thinking if it actually make sense to folk out $150 more and if its sensible, which of them would be a gd recommendation?

i am currently using the galaxy tab as a phone (yes, quite big, but fits my pocket!) and prior to that i was using the Nexus One (plain version of the HTC desire). From my knowledge, u wont go wrong with either a plain google experience device (aka Nexus One, Nexus S), or HTC or Samsung. Suggest u skip the SE, LG, MOTOROLA, HUAWEI or other brands. The reason is simple, so far, only HTC and Samsung has demostrated commitment to upgrade their phones regularly.

 

Lets face it, we buy 1 phone to last min 1 yr. If there are no prompt updates to the latest version of the software (eg: android 2.2, 2.3, 3.0?), your phone is basically backdated. By frequently updating the phones and still supporting it, i will have confidence to purchase additional HTC or sammy devices in the future.

 

Anyway, if your device is not officially supported via updates by your fone manufacturers, u can try looking at the xda developers forum (the de facto forum for android users), HTC and Sammy has the best support thus far. Im on custom roms for both my N1 and Galaxy Tab - the developers in the forum have fast and frequent updates, often faster than the official updates from the manufacturers.

 

If im not wrong , Motorola basically forbid their users from modding their phones by having a very restrictive bootloader for their phones. Go and count the no of Moto phones still on old versions of Android.... Also check out the heavily customised MOTOBLUR interface built on top of the Android OS. If you dont like it, you have very few alternatives.

 

You can also forget about SE. Their updates are s.l.o.w and the phones often have great hardware, but poor software. Take what they say about supporting future android phones with timely updates with a pinch of salt. Until it has been proven, dont waste your hard earned$$ buying phones with NO CLEAR UPGRADE PATH.

No I'm just a geek who likes reading about this stuff

 

I'm tossing between the first two though. Its more of a looks vs brawn for me. I want the HDMI out so thats another reason for the first two only.

 

The Incredible S and Arc are very similar and some reviews put its screen as above the Arc, but for me i prefer the Arc's looks, camera, HDMI out, and screensize over the Incredible S's.

 

The SLCD Galaxy S I'm not too sure about. I've never really considered or read up about it, though its going to be an older model soon with the S II launching soon (its launching in the UK on 1 May), and if I was going to have a trade off with not having the LED notification light (and camera LED flash), I would rather go for something with the brawn of the 2X.

I'm willing to give SE the benefit of doubt on this one. Their 2.3 gingerbread on the arc is damn near close to stock as can be, its more of a skinned gingerbread to look good rather than having their own UI, which means it will be far easier for them to roll out new updates than any other manufacturer bar Googles own phones. Probably why theirs is the only other phone besides the Nexus S that is coming from factory with Gingerbread now.

Played with the rooted Tab and did a comparison with stock Galaxy S and the stock LG 2X. I used quadrant as the common benchmark and this is what I got.... (OC setting at "performance" level rather than "conversative")

 

Rooted Tab w/o OC/UV. (Just the Overcome kernel & ROM)

- About 1500

 

Rooted Tab with OC to 1400Mhz with Min freq set at 200Mhz

- About 2000

 

Rooted Tab with OC to 1400Mhz with Min freq set at 1000 Mhz

- About 2400 (which I wonder will it fry the CPU in prolonged usage)

 

Stock SGS

- About 1000

 

Stock LG O2X

- About 2700

 

So yes, the Tab is fast only when it is OC to run at 1000Mhz minimum. If the min is set low at 200Mhz, it is fast, but not "blazingly" fast. And I'm surprised the LG 2X in stock form gets such high quadrant scores. I wonder what it'll be when rooted and performance enhanced.

I am now considering a HTC phone (mostly between the Desire S and Desire HD) as i lose faith in apple after my iphone 3GS 16GB just died off after only 9months of use...which want will u guys recommend

Eh, I believe HTC has NEVER updated the firmware on my Hero, or if they ever did that, it was so late I already diy the update and stop caring about official updates. It is good they allowed me to self update, but they are locking down the latest models, and although the Sense UI has it's plus points, I am not missing it with the "Senseless" CM7 roms I am using now.

 

I just bought a SE Xperia Arc for my wife, and I think it is wonderful, thin and light, big beautiful screen, great camera. I cant say how it compares with other phones since we hadnt bought any new smartphone in between the Hero and the Arc. The Arc is currently very locked down, no root, no diy rom, but it's a wifephone and it already has the latest gingerbread, so I wont be trying too hard to hack the phone anyway. Unlike the bad old Sony days, almost nothing on the Arc is proprietary, micro USB charger, microSD card, mp3 support, minimal changes to default gingerbread UI. The only proprietary stuff is timescape and mediascape and I think they are great.

 

One more thing, I dont know about SE, but there was a time I needed to regularly send my father's Samsung for repairs and the waiting time is ridiculous as their service center is hopelessly understaffed. The service itself is good though, especially considering the problem was due to my father regularly inserting the charging cable wrongly and they never charged me for it. But the waiting time... I still shudder at the thought of it.

Not that I need root on the wifephone, but it is good to know that I am free to fix the phone instead of waiting for the manufacturer. Unlike the time I desperately needed root to get my company VPN working on the HTC Hero and HTC happily fixed the exploit and made it impossible to root for the Singapore batch of Heroes... I really dont want to touch another HTC again. Long live the new Sony Ericsson!
